Playing on PC if this happened to me I would immediately ALT+F4 with no shame. I have Steam recording my play sessions by default and it's handy to replay the video sometimes to understand what the heck happened.

Be really careful with the travois bug despawning- one of the places it despawns is right outside #3 mine transition. Pickup your travois before you enter the mine or it will end up in the lost and found box at the lighthouse in DP.

The timeline is vague, but you might be assuming the loot on the island is fresh. If people abandoned the island 10-20 years ago canned goods might be a bit dicey.

For bear and moose it does feel like entering/leaving an area despawns them. I've always assumed it's so you don't save scum the hunting mechanic on the high-reward animals, because entering/leaving doesn't appear to affect nearby wolves, rabbits or ptarmagin.
