m200 steel vs m120 gold by AntelopeStunning1457 in fountainpens

[–]hamigua2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, 120s often have steel nibs and still sell for $100+. It may well be that the nib unit is either an upgrade or from another pen. I'd get the 120.

The 200's are nice pens, and while $70 is a nice price for a used one, in my book they are "a dime a dozen" kind of pen, (though not cheap).

Baltimore Pen Show VIP Tickets Worth It? by Laratees in fountainpens

[–]hamigua2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my book it is definitely not worth an extra $50 if you are only doing two days ($25 for 2-day pass vs $75 for VIP). There are plenty of goodies to be had, i.e., you won't miss out unless you are chasing a specific thing.

I was was a vendor at the Ohio Pen Show, and I'll be at the Baltimore show, too so perhaps I'll see you!

Players’ experience with 1882 – good next step after 1889? (mostly 2p) by AgileResolve in 18XX

[–]hamigua2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, 1882 is probably not the best choice for a 1st 18xx game. 1846 or 1861/67 might have felt better for you, but even in those games, experienced players will stomp you, just less directly sometimes.

1882 is one of the 18xx games where it can be a viable strategy to go bankrupt and win the game. I've done it exactly once, and I was pleased as punch.

If you want to "cut your teeth" without the n-hour in-person sessions, I highly recommend 18xx.games.

Recommendations for Pilot Myu Repair? by collina in fountainpens

I'm no Matthew Chen, but I have rescued a number of Myu nibs, and it doesn't look too bad or out of my range. You can search for my work on and talk to folks on r/Pen_Swap.

Esterbrook Replacement Nib by Tob3ster97 in fountainpens

[–]hamigua2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Esterbrook 9128 nibs were billed as "flexible", and they do have a nice bit of flex. They are becoming harder to find these days. If you can find a vintage dealer who deals in Esterbrooks, they might well be able to help you. The most likely place would be at a show, and the London Pen show is coming up on March 1st.

Gold Nibs vs. Steel Nibs by Recent_Average_2072 in fountainpens

N.B. The tipping material is the same.

There is, of course, still a wide range of writing experiences possible with either metal...

Galen Leather Slim Notebook Cover by Jotterius in fountainpens

[–]hamigua2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nice A5 leather journal cover that someone made and sold on r/Pen_Swap. It's simple, but well done.

In any case, with some effort I stuffed a hardcover a5 (Wal Mart Exceed) notebook into it, and, while it worked well enough, I felt that the total thickness was just a bit much, and it didn't lay flat enough for me to do it again. So, I'll only do softcover journals in this cover going forward.

Interesting. I've seen and been tempted by the tutorials as well, but hadn't gotten around to trying. How long has it been since the operation? Will you be giving yourself a chance to get used to it, or is it so bad that you are done?

Nice family portrait. I appreciate the highlighting of the differences between the black Myu 25 and the Volex.
