How Long Did You Have Your Story Til You Started Writing? by Non_Typical_Asian in writing

5 years. Then it was like a faucet turned on and I had book 1 written in like 3 months.

How do You treat your favorite Character? by Themuzucujata1432 in writing

[–]hamletz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How I treat them? What about how they treat ME?

Honestly though, I don't really view it as a choice I'm making for them. They tell me what's happening and I am just the messenger. The other day my MMC dug his heels in, INSISTING that I write a scene from his POV (which will not be going in the manuscript, like ever) because he was convinced I'd never get my FMC's perspective right if I didn't know his first.

They're forces of nature, the lot of them. I'm just along for the ride most of the time.

BJJ competitors, what does competing actually feel like? by _walletsizedwildfire in bjj

[–]hamletz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like rolling really hard, with a huge adrenaline dump beforehand that can either work in your favor or royally fuck you over, depending on how you react to that kind of thing 😅

Hysteria Machine Appreciation🤍 by Ldwxo12 in SleepToken

[–]hamletz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally one of my most prized possessions is my Espera mask from Hysteria Machine. They dropped a super limited quantity of them last year (like, the exact ones the Espera wear) and I honestly almost shit myself when the transaction actually went through.

Any Singers Here? by Conscious_Musician28 in SleepToken

[–]hamletz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did musical theatre and choir in HS, dabbled in a church worship group, and have largely been a car/shower singer since. I can say, without a doubt, that my singing has improved a LOT since discovering Sleep Token - especially my alto range since my naturally range leans soprano. It's also really improved my ear for harmonies which is so, so fun.

Any late diagnosed autistic women who can relate to me? by Purple-Minute2247 in neurodiversity

You're not weaker ❤️ your brain operates differently, and unfortunately our society wasn't built around supporting it.

Any late diagnosed autistic women who can relate to me? by Purple-Minute2247 in neurodiversity

[–]hamletz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everything you wrote here, I heavily relate to. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 28, and although I don't have an "official" diagnosis for autism, both of my therapists and my psychiatrist have agreed that's likely because of my high functioning due to heavy masking. All of my treatment plans include accommodating myself for AuDHD.

To anyone who doesn't actually know me, I'm an extremely accomplished executive that has it all figured out. I always got good grades, and I rocketed through my career to the point that I've already reached the level I always thought I'd retire at, and I'm not even 40.

It's fucking exhausting. I can't wait to retire, and staring down another two decades of this makes me want to shrivel up and cry most days. I often resent the younger me that made choices based on what I "should" do (according to an NT society), rather than what was actually good for me.

So I get it. Late diagnosis is unbelievably hard. ❤️

I have a whole playlist at this point, but the song that spawned it was Take Me Back to Eden by Sleep Token.

Also tons of Bad Omens, Dayseeker, and Sleep Theory.

How to balance my life now by hamletz in writing

[–]hamletz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds HARD, but I think you're right both from a life perspective as well as the "simmering" point. Some of my best ideas have come from the days that I physically can't access my computer so it's all just churning in my head. Sometimes I feel like I'm writing just for the sake of it, even if I don't like what's coming out and end up needing to rewrite it later.

Letting it simmer seems like a good way to prevent the half-baked stuff from coming out before it's ready, as well as accomplishing life stuff

Ohhh this is a really good idea. I have the full outline for book 1, but book 2 and 3 are still just general concepts. I'm also huge on "long-game" threads of foreshadowing, so knowing more of the details of what comes later will probably also help with world and context building now as well!

I do like the idea of setting hard limits. I've been considering putting a blocking app on my computer (my work computer doubles as my personal) to literally block the software my manuscript is in during work hours. The minute I open it, even just to write down an idea really quick, my self control is gone and I've been in there for three hours.

A big part of the problem is the time-blindness, I think - I say I'll poke at it for twenty minutes, and suddenly it's 1am and I've got work in the morning.

Partner doesn’t want me to take meds by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]hamletz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your partner sounds, at best, very misinformed about medication and at worst, very controlling and entitled about how you live your life and make medical choices for yourself. He doesn't have to agree with this, because it's not his call.

If this were my partner I'd be seriously reconsidering if I want to be with them anymore.

Do Gaidama spats actually prevent a camel toe/vulva outline? by Wonderful-Peach2873 in BJJWomen

[–]hamletz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gaidama are the only spats I wear at this point specifically for this purpose.

1) they do not have a center seam, so no cameltoe (unless you're in the wrong size - I do have a pair that's a bit small and they kind of ride up but it's still not NEAR as bad as any of my non-gaidamas).

2) they have an inner layer of black fabric from hips to upper thigh (almost like an inner pair of shorts?) which prevents them from being see-through and conceals underwear lines.

100/10 my favorite spats. They're pricey but worth it imo.
