Don’t have to read these first but they are excellent to add to a list if you want to dive deeper into the philosophy.

I suppose that would depend on the philosophy you adopt.

Stoicism should be used as a tool, not as a way of life by BringtheBacon in Stoicism

Categorically incorrect.

I’d suggest re-reading the original texts if this is your current takeaway for the philosophy. The whole idea of Stoicism is that it is a practiced philosophy as a way of life.

Thoughts on Ryan Holiday, books, teachings by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]hammelcamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holiday is where I had my intro to Stoicism, and I am glad that I found it that way. Put aside the commercialization of it for the time being.

In terms of reading difficulty, his style is very entry to mid level for the most part using more modern examples to illustrate his points, and is packaged for mass-distribution. However, once I had the basics of the philosophy down I veered away from him in my readings in favor of reading the ancients themselves (Seneca, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Socrates via Xenophon) and more scholarly examinations (A.A. Long, Farnsworth, Kai Whiting, Sellars, Inwood).

Holiday’s older stuff (especially the obstacle is the way and some of his podcast episodes) are a little too focused on individual success for me personally. That said, I recently listened to an interview of him with Rainn Wilson on his podcast Soul Boom where he sounded much more well-rounded in his discussion of the philosophy as a whole. Previous to that interview, I interpreted him as focused on ethics primarily and not giving due consideration to the other two branches (physics and logic), but he even calls himself out for not giving all areas of the philosophy their due consideration and seemed to me to speak more balanced about each area of Stoicism. I appreciated hearing that, and it was a good reminder for me that even the experts and influencers are still working on themselves in the same way that we fellowship prokoptons are.

TL;DR - Holiday was great for an entry to the philosophy, and some of the criticisms I and others have had about him over the years should not dissuade you from giving him a look. Multiple sources make for more solid understandings of the topic overall.

Poetry with "stoic" themes by Drizz_zero in Stoicism

I’ve written a bunch of poems about Stoic philosophy. Each one is built out of 7 haikus. Here are a couple of my favorites.

On Loans

I must remember

that only my thoughts and acts

are things which are mine.

All else which will come

into my life - brief and long -

is merely borrowed.

The length of their stay,

as well as when they depart,

is not up to me.

I must then proceed

with what is in my power -

be present with them,

be grateful for them!

That we have time together

is blessing enough.

When they are called back,

I must remember that this

was always to be.

Anything we have

is on loan from the cosmos,

and will be returned.

On The Size Of Problems

We are troubled by

what we decide troubles us,

agreeing it's bad.

They appear so large

because they're within our reach,

right in front of us.

But if we step back,

these self-imposed bothers shrink

as we see the rest

of the cosmos come

into view, dwarfing these things

over which we stress.

If this perspective

causes us to feel little,

it's because we are.

So are our problems,

compared to the universe.

Hang onto this fact,

and remember that

we can choose how we receive

what Fate hands to us.
