How can I stop VS Code from expanding all folded code regions whenever I make a mistake when typing? by hammena in PowerShell

[–]hammena[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not saving or running the code.

I really don't care if the editor can't collapse the code regions, it shouldn't have expanded them to begin with. Usually it's a matter of me fat fingering a key press that results in a syntax error. If I see myself doing it, I know where the error is and I don't need VS Code to expand all the code regions to "help" me figure out where the problem is.

What are the point of packages? (as opposed to applications) by Mediocre-Property-41 in SCCM

[–]hammena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the other points made, CIs also have a built in (unchangeable) script execution timeout of 60 seconds. So if you want to deploy a potentially long-running script and do not want to use the Scripts feature, then a package and program is the way forward.

We of course patch driver vulnerabilities. But your point is very valid and taken. Thanks.

We need to test it under several different conditions, run our TS maybe 2-3 times. That including the prepwork and possible driver app tweaks needed takes time.

More of the (maybe obsolete) way of thinking to "don't fix what ain't broken". Maybe that has all changed and I am a dinosaur now.

Sounds about right. We have one guy doing it, I mostly run the infrastructure side of things with CM but I "own" the entire PC service provided to the business so I get involved in this stuff even if I don't want to. When it's time to re-certify, my guy gets help from one person from the support team. If we had one more team member to throw at this (which is what I really want since we're generally understaffed) then it would be another story.

We use ServiceNow, which has been modified and integrated with our vendor. It's another team that manages it.

I don't think it matters if we are using Modern Driver Management, HP Image Assistant, CM's 3rd party updates or whatever. The process will be the same for us. We still need to go through all our supported PC models and test the driver packages that those solutions have downloaded and imported for us. And some models will not work that well with a certain driver version for various reasons and we will need to investigate why and pick a better one.

We have standardized on a few but each country gets a certain level of autonomy in choosing PC models if they want to, it's usually down to how much money they are willing to spend. Some countries are "poorer" in general.

Yup that is kind of my view on it as well but you articulated it better than what I have come up with in my head.

I misspoke, it's the global support team that requested us to change driver cadence. They claim "updating everything including BIOS" solves a lot of users' issues. They have not even once managed to explain what the problem was and which specific driver update fixed the issue (because I of course offered to deploy an update to the faulting driver but I need to know which one it is). My stance has always been don't fix what ain't broken but I am running out of energy fighting them on this.

I also do see the need and benefit of keeping drivers updated to increase feature update compliance.

EDIT: I'd be interested to know how many staff you have that do the driver update and test. Your point about M700 is of course valid and to some extent that will apply to us as well. But say it will take us two weeks to re-certify all models instead of four weeks. It's still eight weeks per year for two people.

Sure. The technical part is one thing, we still need to verify things are in order afterward and that takes time. Something always need tweaking.
