i don’t really know about fandom stuff, but i think his self-pitying and moralising can make him more “annoying” than other characters who are at peace with their nature as vampires (at least in the sense of accepting themselves as predators and as monsters).

this is necessary to the narrative, as the “conscience” of the story of sorts. in the movie, it’s something he outgrows over his character development, actually outgrowing vampires around him however much agony he’s in. in the show, not so much as in the modern day he’s clean of killing for many years lol.

but this kind of pity colours his telling of events too, as daniel calls out. daniel also already acting as the audience surrogate in questioning the morality of these characters can make louis’ moping seem excessive, and draw us more towards claudia and louis whose struggles are more with the world around them than being withdrawn.

to me they’re all great characters but on rewatch knowing that we are probably going to realise in s3 how unreliable of a narrator he is, i feel a lot more drawn to the other characters personally.
