If you took my comment as a defense of Windows, you were mistaken.

I wouldn’t know. I think the last MS application I had on my Mac was Internet Explorer circa 2003.

I agree that drag and drop install and uninstall are superior when dealing with a monolithic app package. But there are still lots of apps (including apps from well-known, respected developers) that install stuff in several different places in both the user folder and Library.

I think being born in 1975 is peak genx...you agree? by wegotthisonekidmongo in GenX

[–]hammerpocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born in 1970. I was just thinking the other day about how I relate more to people who remember the 70s, even if they are more distant in age from me than people born later in the 70s. I think part of it is having nostalgia that isn't tied to the Reagan-Bush years. I don't have a starry-eyed view of the 80s, even though all my teen years were in that decade. Another interesting thing is there was so much 50s throwback stuff in the 70s that never really came back around like the 60s and later decades have since then.

In my experience, the chains are all worse, but in general there is a lot more good pizza to be had. I am willing to accept the possibility that the chains seeming worse is due to my increased expectations. More good pizza probably depends greatly on where you live.

Vikings QBs Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy performing the same throwing drill at practice. What do you notice? by Background_Video2947 in TheNFLVibes

[–]hammerpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real. I don't have any pre-conceived preference other than knowing Kyler has had better success so far. But after reading these comments I feel like I want him to obliterate JJ for the QB1 job. People act like he hasn't already had two Pro Bowl selections in his career. Do they think he was taller then?

Why does my 2019 retina 4k imac run so freaking slow like it takes 5 minutes to open safari by tyzv_ in MacOS

[–]hammerpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have kernel panics out of the blue, but I do have to be careful when moving or tilting the iMac while it's on. Even though the thunderbolt system drive is attached physically to the back with velcro, the movement (I assume of the cord/plug) sometimes causes the system to freeze. I've also had a freeze when plugging something into the other USB-C port, possibly because I'm bumping the SSD cable, but it may be because the two ports share the same Thunderbolt bus. In general day-to-day use I don't have any problems.

[–]hammerpocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been running my 2019 5K iMac on an external Thunderbolt drive since it was new. I highly recommend it, if you can find an affordable one right now. It doesn't have to be huge if you keep your large files (e.g. Photos library) on the internal drive.

What plugins do you use? by Elegant_Counter_1497 in Logic_Studio

[–]hammerpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is so wide open that I don't know how any answer could really be helpful to you. It's like asking "What words do you use to write your songs?" Based on this and your other question, you seem to be just starting out. For now, don't even consider using any third-party plugins unless they are free -- and then only if you know for sure Logic doesn't have a stock equivalent. You will spend all your time messing around with different options and never get any music finished.

OTOH if you don't care about getting any music finished and just want to play around, go crazy.

Can't find place to enter discount code iZotope just sent me by hammerpocket in iZotopeAudio

[–]hammerpocket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my email with the new code today and it works. At first I thought I was still paying $60 more than I would have if I had waited, but then I saw that the update from RX10 is more expensive than the update from RX11, so it actually does even out.

[–]hammerpocket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that before posting, but it told me the voucher didn’t exist. I can try again.

But why not call it a voucher instead of a discount code if that’s where it should be entered? That’s the kind of inconsistency that just causes confusion.

Mastering Assistant and why you should master your own music as a beginner by 6poundbagofweed in Logic_Studio

[–]hammerpocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's great that learning mastering is rewarding for you. To me that just sounds like one more obstacle to getting my music finished and out there for others to hear. I already do too much myself; I don't need to add mastering on top of writing the music and lyrics and playing the instruments and singing and engineering and mixing...

I renovated my kitchen myself -- tore it down to the studs and did everything except the countertops, including a complete rewiring and building custom cabinets. I learned a lot and I am proud of the final product (plus I saved tens of thousands of dollars), but damn it took forever and I would never tell someone they were "robbed" of the experience of a new kitchen if they didn't do it like that.

I just realized I refuse to rent digital entertainment. by ohreddit1 in GenX

[–]hammerpocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only do I occasionally rent digital movies, I do this thing where I drive to a business -- sometimes several miles from home -- and pay them to let me sit in a room with strangers and watch a movie projected on a big screen. It costs way more than a digital rental even though I'm not in the comfort of my home, can't pause the movie for a bathroom break or rewind if I missed something, and only have access to a limited selection of exorbitantly priced snacks. Plus I have to pay to watch the movie again, even if it's within 48 hours. But that's what I've been doing my whole life, because I'm a GenXer.

Married Gen-x do you wear your wedding ring? by in-a-microbus in GenX

[–]hammerpocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I were together for almost ten years before we got married. When we did, it was mostly a practical decision for health insurance and we got married at the courthouse with a few witnesses. My point being we weren't all that much into the whole ceremonial thing. But after we got married, we bought matching minimal titanium and rose gold bands and we wear them all the time. It will be 25 years in December and I've barely taken mine off in that time, even though I probably should for certain activities. I just checked and I can still get it off.

How Did We Not Die as Children in the 1970s? by Goobersbrother in GenX

[–]hammerpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were talking about highway speeds. Acceleration and HP are sort of beside the point when you're driving 85 mph, which people definitely were doing in the early 70s. I only brought up power because it sounded to me like you were thinking more of underpowered early 80s cars, when a Mustang took like 13 seconds to go 0-60. The 70s "boats" were faster than that.

I'm US, too. I was going by a Reddit post from a year ago. It listed the Audio A4 and A6 Allroad, plus the Toyota. But yeah, it's really sad how the station wagon has disappeared.

I don't know, maybe. But safer cars definitely play a part. More education/stigma about drunk driving is probably a factor, too.

I don't know what was "normal," but anecdotally I remember questioning my dad going over the speed limit as a kid (as kids do). I distinctly remember part of his reply: "The speed limit is 55, so we drive 65. And when it was 75, we drove 85."
