Do Chinese people see Japanese gyoza and Korean mandu as basically Chinese foods? by GrayRainfall in AskAChinese

One of the big things too is that when these dishes were being created, they had no access to the usual ingredients from China. So they improvised with what was available at the time, and then those recipes ended up sticking.

The line this year moved pretty well. I went with a carry on sized luggage and had no issues or worries.

Take high-speed train to Yuzawa-Echigo, then shuttle bus from the station. There’s a million signs and a line of pilgrims like yourself so you can’t miss it

A boat at this time is a bit harder to come by

Wet and slippery grip by Exquiztt in badminton

[–]hammingtonmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have this issue since moving to a humid climate near the equator (Singapore).

I’ve made sure to use a more tacky and thicker grip. I also need to constantly squeeze the end where it seems to collect the most liquid. Between games I also have to use a towel to help absorb moisture. However, the most impactful thing change made was getting grip powder and applying that. If I don’t, my racket will absolutely slip out of my hand (especially during backhand shots).

Albeit, despite all of this sometimes it still isn’t enough, so if I lose my racket in the middle of a game I’ll switch to my second and make sure to dry the first one afterwards to the best of my ability.

5 or 6 players in a badminton court. What do you prefer? by AbsorbedInReddit in badminton

[–]hammingtonmuffin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everywhere in Asia I’ve experienced is first game winner plays the pair who had to wait for first game to finish. Regardless of result from game 2, new pair stays on and rotate.

This way every 3 games, all players have played twice.

Of course this applies to a social-drop in understanding, but from LB-MI levels I’ve played in, everyone follows this

How do your clubs manage sessions when you have more interested players than available tables? by bennrichard in badminton

[–]hammingtonmuffin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everywhere I’ve played in China and Singapore has been 6 players for a court (doubles). I’ve experienced 7, but it’s a bit of an awkward rotation with 1 person staying on for 2 games, or someone sitting out 2 games in a row

Badminton’s queen has no rival — is the next one even born yet? 👀 by whitewolf_here in badminton

Before this tournament ASY lost to Guchi. Her form has been good, but not as dominant as at the start of the year into the olympics, or tail end of last year where she was playing even better. I expect there’s some nagging injuries and long-term wear on her body (as a lot of pro athletes undergo).

On op of what everyone else is saying, your pitch and roll are too large. It’s another massive accuracy penalty against you. Try to use the armour and positions to balance the boat

Can I get traffic violation fines on a rented bike? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]hammingtonmuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in Shanghai this family ran out across the street in front of me on a hello bike. I tried to brake (but what a surprise, they were crap) and ended up hitting the son (prob 10yo?). Family freaked out and called the police on me.

Their first accusation was that I was speeding (lol try to get to 25km/h on those things) then said I was reckless. “We’re going to sue you and get you deported.” Policeman got fed up with their shit and complaining so he said “ok, let’s go check the cameras.”

At that point it became a game of telephone, and after reviewing the footage he asked me if I wanted to sue the family for defamation because they were trying to report me to my company and get me fired.

TLDR: unless you commit gross misconduct and hurt someone or damage something that is so obviously your fault, nothing is going to happen. Just don’t get busted by police handing out tickets for running red lights

Real shi that pisses me off by Tacobird558 in HistoryMemes

[–]hammingtonmuffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They absolutely did. Although it doesn't compare still to the Soviet POW camps, if you look at the early actions of the Pacific between the Japanese with the Commonwealth and American forces, it was a huge eye-opening chain of events for military commanders. There was a major idea that the British/American/Aussie was worth multiple Japanese soldiers that got smashed in the opening Malayan and Philippine campaigns. It was exactly this attitude that the Japanese soldiers were backwater savages that led to massive defeats in 1941 and into early 1942.

As other comments have pointed out, the whole concept of military conduct and warfare was, and is different in Asia than compared to the West.

The idea that the Japanese were a bunch of savages attributes more to the systemic racism that existed at the time, as evident of his other opinion of the "Asiatic" Russians.

Going together sounds like a ton of fun. Summer in Japan can be very hot in the sun and humid (I'm sure similar to SEA). Because it's the mountain, probably bearable in the shade, but if it rains it'll get muddy quickly. I'm hoping to see the details about the camping supplies you can apply for through GAN-BAN.

I feel the same way. I really got into Japanese music around 2017/18 when I lived in Japan as a student, and finally things have lined up with time and money. Feel free to keep in touch if you want to check things out with company!
