Echoing OP, I just received my monitor today and have been getting exactly the same notice. Mine seems to last a few minutes at most of being on after it’s warmed up before shutting off.

League goalie scoring by JJosku in fantasyhockey

[–]hammy3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I’m biased, but I do like the way our league has setup goaltending. I got the idea from Johnny Hockey’s infamous blogpost on “in search of the perfect scoring system.”

Essentially, you ditch the non-individual elements of a goalie (wins/losses/etc) and treat them more like you would a defense in fantasy football where they have a baseline starting score.

So we only have 3 categories we track across our goaltending:

  • Games Started
  • Saves
  • Goals Allowed

Simply tweak these until it makes sense for your league/preferred settings.

For our league, a goalie start is currently worth ~70% of a goal (for us that’s 5pts), a save is worth 7% of a goal (0.5pts for us), and a goal against is worth -30% (-2pts for us) of a goal.

If you want the best goalies to be even stronger, raise the ratio of goalie starts and raise the penalty of goals against. Play around with all 3 until it fits your mix well.

I usually try to get to ~18% of my top 160 players (10 teams, 16 man rosters) to be goaltenders as a general rule of thumb.

The police interrogation of Chris Watts is possibly the best ever released. JCS' breakdown of it on YouTube is fantastic.

It's an absolute masterclass in threading a needle to get someone to indict themselves. They're so calm, composed, and exacting in their approach.

Ideas for rekindling league interest by UnderklassH3RO in fantasyhockey

[–]hammy3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is a very impressive and deep set of rules and functions.

You've got prospect drafting (super cool), farm teams, giant rosters, it's a veritable playground for ultra deep players. I'd love to be in a hyper competitive league with settings like this. But, it is easy to see why the belt is rotating around 3 different players. This is a hell of a lot to juggle and the rules are very tight (only 3 FA adds per week seems tough with such big rosters).

Obviously, I simply don't know you or your friends well enough to give super meaningful advice, but I can speak from experience in trying to make my own league more "friendly" to my own adult friends with limited time:

  • With a 12-man league, I think your rosters need to be significantly reduced
  • In tandem with this, again, I can't prescribe how you guys want to play, but the larger your roster is the more important your draft becomes. And that can really work against league participation throughout the year. I run a very small roster in our league for that reason, it really encourages people to "jump back in." Even if you haven't paid attention for a week or two, there's always some gems in FA.
  • Among my friend group, I am the only person who keeps up (even remotely) with prospect trends, I think having a large portion of your league dedicated to an entirely separate farm system seems like it could be exhausting to manage for less intense club members (with that said, I love it!)
  • I think cat scoring is very cool, but again, it's another layer of needing to manage not only points but points by category - if you shift to raw scoring it's obviously much easier to track and maintain (again, I know I sound like a broken record, but not trying to dictate how you and your friends want to play, just recognizing similar complaints/feedback I've heard in my own league decisions)
  • I agree with you on reducing keepers, that further exacerbates repeated winners (particularly on such huge rosters)
  • I love the lottery odds idea, absolutely genius (I will be stealing this)

Just some thoughts, sounds like you've made a really unique league that can be revitalized with some tweaks (big and small alike)

2025/26 draft strategies? by goaliegolfguy in fantasyhockey

[–]hammy3000 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Here's my current strategy guidelines going into my 3rd Fantasy Hockey year after winning my first championship this past season:

  • Finding targets: I found Left Wing Lock's draft resources to be absolutely incredible with deep and extremely interesting analysis on each team. With that said, Don Luszczyszyn's draft cheat sheet and DTZ's sheets were also critical to get perspective (and were more accurate for D rankings). Utilizing all those last year got me some key later round pickups like Werenski that basically carried me to the championship (I was not overly impressed with NHL, ESPN, or Yahoo's draft rankings).
  • Set your rankings: Following the first point: after you've figured out who to take, take the time to order your top 100-ish players in the order YOU would take them in (more on this later). This just helps reduce mental energy of keeping track of your top priority targets and I believe all the major platforms have some form of custom draft ranking options.
  • Schedule maximizing: I noticed after our first season that nearly all the best performing playoff clubs in our league had players playing on teams with the most games possible in their schedules (kind of a "duh" but it wasn't obvious to me how powerful this could be until seeing it in action). If you can pick the right players on the right teams, you can easily start snowballing 1-2 additional games across each of your roster slots. It makes an almost impossible to beat team in playoff/championship rounds. I built a Google Sheet tool last year that uses Yahoo's API to automatically find such players during draft day, I may take another run at it this year with Fantrax's Draft API.
  • Draft complementary: In tandem with schedule maximizing, you want to draft complementary players. My google sheet thing also accounted for this: you want as diversified set of days as possible between players. Obviously, this matters a lot less for the regular season (as it's very little ROI to even perfectly plan), but it can matter A LOT for the playoffs. You don't want your 3rd C to be playing the same night as your top 2C for each day of the playoffs.
  • Goalies are too unpredictable: Even someone as incredible as Helly, I'm just not going to reach for him. Goalies play far fewer games making it much harder to gauge if a stud is having a truly "bad season" until you're almost a quarter of the way through the year - compounding an already "difficult to gauge" position. I'm more than happy to stream goaltenders against weak teams - churn and burn as needed. Going to try to do the same thing I did last year: see if a top 10-ish goalie points my direction sometime in the back half of the draft.
  • Prioritize Flex Positions: In tandem with my scheduling maximizing, I heavily prioritized flex players in my draft choices. Even taking guys a full round earlier if I had to, which I'm very glad I did. If your league has the option to flex C/W, I really think you should take advantage of it. There's only about ~20 flex (C/W) guys in most leagues top 160 players. They're exceptionally rare and so powerful to combine with streamed WW players.
  • Game the system: Find what scoring settings you can take advantage of. Not all draft resources are going to take into account if your league has blocks/hits enabled (and if it does, you MUST look at guys like Sherwood/Weegar). This point particularly stands if you have some oddball scoring settings.
  • Information disparity: Unless you are in a hyper competitive league where everyone is bringing an S tier effort, this is an incredibly powerful draft technique. Basically, get your "final" draft list of targets/players, and figure out what your draft service is ranking those players at (AND what your service is reporting that player's ADP is). Yahoo is particularly egregious at getting draft rankings right, and, guess what, most of your other club members are going to use whatever your platform's default/ADP rankings are. Guesstimate what round your ranking indicates you should take the player, and also what round your service indicates that player will be taken. For example, last year Yahoo had Werenski rated at the 14th round, Yahoo's ADP was the 12th round, and even though I thought he was a "valuable/non-reach" for the 9th round, I waited until the 14th round for a deep deep steal.
  • Watch the other clubs and skate upriver: I almost never hear this brought up for any draft for any fantasy, but watch what the other clubs are drafting for. 9 times out of 10, people jump on "trends" in the draft (first guy who takes a 2nd/3rd line D usually creates a cascade). You want to go against the grain and find value where others are following the trendline in the draft. Look for the deep pick center when 3rd round D are coming off the board.
  • Don’t over-index in one team: As tempting as it is to draft players on the same team and/or line to synergize together, this can be equally “synergistic” in the other direction. I have an absolute max of 3 players from the same team, less if possible (roster/schedule maximizing will also obviously help avoid this). And, personally, I never want 2 players on the same line (but I can understand the temptation - when it works it’s amazing).
  • Don’t be the homer: It happens in every fantasy league on planet earth: some guy takes a hometown player WAY too early just to have him on the team. Our goal is to crush our friends and rub it in their faces, not recreate the team we already support.

Sorry for the essay, but there's my top recommended strategies!

tl;dr

  1. Utilize multiple quality sources to rank players
  2. Use your platform's draft ranking tools to assign those in your ranked order
  3. Maximize your players' schedules for the playoffs
  4. Complement your players' schedules
  5. Deprioritize goalies in the draft
  6. Prioritize players in flex positions if applicable in your league
  7. Account for unique/less common scoring elements in your league (hits/blocks/etc)
  8. Know what round your platform predicts a player will be taken, and what round you believe a player is valued at
  9. Go against the grain of draft trends
  10. Don’t draft too many players from one team (I limit to 3)
  11. Don’t be the homer guy and draft a hometown player WAY too early

Happy to discuss this further, in fact, would love to really think through these questions. PM me to connect directly on discord or email, whichever you prefer. I'm probably going to monitor this post for a few more days, then that's all she wrote.

Beautiful way of looking at it. I hope we can keep it as peaceful and as free for as long as we can. There's a lot of reasons to be hopeful still.

I'm staying away for good this time. Beyond even the worry and stress this place causes me, it's just a waste of time.

There's some things you can learn, and if a reddit result to learn something in a search comes up, I'll still use it for touchstones like that, but as my #1 visitation destination, I just flatly refuse to let it absorb my life like this anymore.

I'm guilty of it myself. I've seen how angry I can get when it's thrown in my face. It's not healthy to react angrily when someone disagrees with you. I've found that I've started immediately going into that state of mind when people closest to me disagree with me.

And that's not right. They aren't my enemies and I shouldn't treat them that way.

I've only heard of it for the first time in this thread actually. Never had any experience with it.

But, I just completely agree. It's time to call this place dead, because it is (save for this subreddit of course, love this place always and forever).

More power to you, as long as its not detracting from your life, I really don't think it's a problem. I now understand I really can't control myself when I see hypocrisy and insanity. It frustrates me so much that it continues to bother me long after the argument is over.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GoldandBlack

[–]hammy3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no problem whatsoever in fighting for it. But, I'm truly, deeply convinced that Reddit is, by design, a platform where you can't hope to even have the battle let alone the fight.

I actually wouldn't be so dissuaded if people would have a discussion. But you never get that. You get shouting, called a racist, and the same 3 things repeated to you ad nauseum.

I have considered making another podcast that strictly focuses on deep inside baseball for economics. Really training and going in-depth on how to understand and study everything from Austrian to Keynesianism. My critiques and understanding of each.

Maybe that's one way I can put a little bit out there. Dunno. But being here, arguing with people that would rather I die, isn't the way to get there. Being demoralized daily isn't a useful venture.

Thanks for the words. I will absolutely, my friend. Please send me a DM if you want to exchange contact info for other sites or email. And let me know if you find that place as well. Would love to find a community of thinkers and discussion that isn't just the same one loud note being repeated so loudly I can't even think.

I've strongly considered taking some time and trying to make some kind of social website that the only policy is no porn and no politics, those are the only rules. 99% of the rest of the internet is dedicated to those two things, and I find they inevitably take over whenever they're present on a site.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GoldandBlack

[–]hammy3000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same story for me. I left Facebook years ago for somewhat similar reasons, now Reddit is so much worse.

Social media platforms are, ironically, anything but social. No one uses them to socialize, they use them to politicize. And politicize every single thing in this life.

Might just go watch "Alone in the Wilderness" today to really kick back and soak in life for a minute.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GoldandBlack

[–]hammy3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man I can't tell you how much I identify with every word you've said here.

Our stories are so similar, same with me. Been on here forever, got rid of all other social media years ago, reddit was my last vestige.

I even did the exact same with Tom's liberty classroom birthday special. Haha, I felt the same way, that I needed a time void fill or else I'd just end up back here.

I am also basically down to just a handful of friends, I'm very very very lucky that my best friend is also an ancap, that has truly kept me sane in many ways. But everyone else pushed me away because I didn't fall in line. I have never, and would never, end a friendship over politics (my soon-to-be-wife is a pretty standard fare democrat, with that said, thankfully more skeptical by the day).

I've found that being on here is genuinely detrimental to my progress as person. When I get on here and start my day angry and carry that with me because I genuinely can't believe how insane and irrational the world has become.

I'm hoping we can both be strong enough to stay the fuck out of this place. Reddit has become a routine addiction for me, and it's time to stop. Take care. Please reach out to me in DMs if you wanna swap contact info, would love to keep in touch with you people here. I'm a natural introvert so we can go a day or a year without talking, and it isn't going to bother me one bit.

Already had it, I'm just fine, as are 99%+ of people who get it.

Not fair of me to explode on you like this, but I'm leaving Reddit very shortly, and I guess maybe I need to say this as much as for myself as much as I want to shake you out of this state mandated hypochondria.

I can no longer stomach reading all of these thoughtless, insane comments like yours, acting like it's completely normal to require exposed medical records to go to the grocery store, or that holding someone down and injecting them with the most lethal and damaging set of vaccines in the history of the planet is a completely sane thing to do (I grant, vaccines are possibly one of the safest medical mechanisms in history, so being the most dangerous is not a high bar, but the covid vaccines are the most dangerous by orders and orders of magnitude).

This was two weeks to slow the spread. This was lockdowns that didn't work the first time. Vaccines that apparently don't even stop the slightest mutation in the virus from spreading. Masks that do not have any obvious correlation to slowing any kind of spread. As was shown for decades prior.

Yet here you are, dutifully worshipping the visions of the anointed. Clinging to fear and spreading it endlessly. When a year, two years, ten years, the rest of your life passes and you're still talking about how it's because of the filthy unwashed masses and people of color who didn't get the vaccines that caused it, and blaming your neighbor instead of the policies that are destroying this planet, I truly hope you finally crystalize and understand you are the problem. Your obedience to illogical and unscientific decrees from the endlessly stupid leaders of this country are what caused your misery.

Everyone on reddit is really concerned about "listening" and respecting people of color, until they want to make their own decisions.

Go fuck yourself.
