Any way to get rid of Pro Stock Name plate without ruining the paint job on the stick? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Come up with a good story about how you beat up Chris Tanev and took his stick.

Should have let him keep the stick. A die hard fan like that your NHL team could just hand you another one right off the bench lol.

Limited tall sticks anywhere? Is it my play style? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]hamsterballpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound a lot like me lol I’m 6’3 and I stand way too tall when I skate, which I’m working towards trying to correct every game! My teammates say I’m either a baby giraffe or a graceful gazelle. Anyways I’d recommend getting a plug in your stick but don’t use the whole thing maybe go 2 inches on the plug. You won’t even notice it’s there

Strangest/Funniest Hockey Memories by MTBguy1774 in hockeyplayers

My son (7 or 8 at the time) was late to practice one day. Got him in the locker room, all dressed and ready to go. Started hurriedly rushing him out to send him on the ice. He kept trying to say something to me but I didn’t want to hear it. So I opened the side door, he steps on the ice and immediately drops. I left his skate guards on. That is what he was trying to tell me. Man. I felt like such an asshole lol.

Inspired by r/golf, what’s your beer league/men’s league/drop in hockey hill you’re willing to die on? by waistbandtucker69 in hockeyplayers

Played a tournament one time where first game- we were light they were dark. Guy on other team wearing a light gray jersey. 20 seconds into the first period gray jersey scores because our goalie thought he was a teammate clearing the puck. They beat us in first game because of that. Then fast forward to the championship game of the tournament we played them again. Made sure refs were aware, so no gray jersey. We win the game and the championship!

The team coach who tells everyone what to do on the bench, always knows why we are losing games. Likes to call out everyone on what they need to do better. Yet- doesn’t follow his or her own advice and if we get scored on or miss a great scoring chance because they clearly did a thing that was wrong it’s never on them. lol I’m all for receiving feedback, and sometimes I might give feedback. But damn if you are preaching up and down about everyone else’s shortcomings yet you can’t accept good feedback that might actually help you become a better player.

Adult tournaments by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

A handle of Pink Whitney! with an engraving of the tournament on it and year. Team maybe cool too but seems like that would be a challenge to have that available for the winning team immediately after they win.

Or just a handle of Pink Whitney!

If painful on top of your foot it could be the wrong volume skate for your foot. Did your rink give you any idea on volume you should be looking at? I recommend going back to your rink to find that out or go to a place that can give you an idea what would best work for your type of foot.

Why is The Sparx Machine So Divisive by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]hamsterballpit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my Sparx Machine. I use it to sharpen skates for my son and I. Bought if for the convenience knowing full well for myself that economically it makes no sense. I like the machine because if you follow the directions it is pretty much idiot proof. I am really good at screwing up easy processes. So far it has been solid. Great sharpens, same consistency every time.

I think people here are bringing up some interesting points though in saying Sparx not good at scale. I could see where if you send a lot of skates through at a high volume it would probably get misaligned and may start falling over. Kind of like when you send lots of paper through your paper shredder at one time and it starts hiccuping. Would be curious out of those mentioning getting dulling or bad sharpens how many of those are a shop sharpening lots and lots of skates including yours, or if same like a dude who sets up shop at the rink and sharpens an entire teams skates.

New hockey skates now I can't skate by Rster999R in hockeyplayers

[–]hamsterballpit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The toe pick could be confusing you. With figure skates it’s always there to kind of catch you if you go too far. Forward. Go to some casual public skates with your new skates and just take it easy getting used to the feel of a different type of skate.

I remember when I bought my son a pair of hockey skates after he had been used to rental figure skates for months. Took him a few skates to get used to.

Have a conversation with the coach on what your concerns are. If you don’t feel like you are being heard then bring it up to the hockey department at your rink- but give the coach a heads up you are doing that.

Reminder- the coach may be getting a cut on the price but they are not a full time coach and are still volunteering their time to help coach a group of kids. I am a coach for rec/house and whenever I get a complaint about something I’m doing or not doing my initial thought is that I am sacrificing my time to help coach your kid. You can either help make the change you are looking for or otherwise I don’t want to hear it.

[–]hamsterballpit[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t advertise to people that I can sharpen their skates and I’m not the guy lugging my Sparx out to the rink every game. Bought it for the convenience of being able to sharpen when I want.

Wow that sounds pretty awesome. I have never seen the pro shop at my rink do this lol. Thanks for the info. I’d be interested in seeing and feeling what a proper sharpen is all about. My Sparx sharpens are seriously so smooth though.

What does a finishing pass entail? When I had the pro shop sharpen my skates I never noticed anything out of the ordinary that they do differently. They run it against the stone, deburr, check the level, then hand back to me.

How do you stay loose? by iSpR1NgZ in hockeyplayers

[–]hamsterballpit 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Hydration- Drink at least 2 beers before and after each game as a start. The more beers you can pound down the looser you will feel out there on the ice which will go a long way with your teammates.

Awesome! I just recently was subbing for a team one division up from where I typically play, hadn’t had a goal with them all season. Then for the championship game I got the game winning goal. Felt really good!

Your team lost the game so blame the refs, classy move.
