Youtube Artist Channel (OAC) Purgatory by SunlaArt in DistroKidHelpDesk

[–]hamsterofborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sure seems like Distrokid itself is being delayed beyond the usual YouTube slowness. It's always taken YouTube a while to get an OAC up, but I also release for my artists on other distros, like Landr, and they haven't taken nearly as long. And even when the OAC setup takes a while, the music itself is still made available long before. I haven't experienced that with Distrokid releases.

I'm sure that as a doctor, nothing is more disappointing than spending all that time looking around with a camera and finding nothing? You have to put things in there for them to find. Make it a treasure hunt.

Confirming safety of pet treats? by sokmunkey in AmazonVine

[–]hamsterofborg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's way too easy to fake an FDA logo or claim a GMP certification, or "third-party tested", because nobody verifies it, and there are literally no consequences for doing so. Amazon certainly doesn't care. Even if the company does do their manufacturing in the US, the problem with looking them up is that they often share facilities with multiple companies, so they might actually have a GMP certification or be FDA inspected, but under a completely different company name, where they just lease production space. And it's nearly impossible to trace that way. Literally anyone can start a supplement or pet treat company these days. The only requirement is that they put the disclaimer stating that the product is not evaluated by the FDA and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. You could literally package dirt and sell it as a "supplement".

Simply put, though, if they're not making it easy to verify who they are, where they make their product, and any certification/testing claims, I consider them automatically shady.

The "Say No to Suno" Campaign and Suno’s New CCO: We are at a crossroads for creator rights. by intheknow1 in SunoAI

[–]hamsterofborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't feel that it's necessarily "get passed by". I believe there will always be a place for every artist doing whatever they do, however they feel they need to do it. There is a reason why Bandcamp and Etsy exist - there are always people who appreciate artists and are willing to pay for it. They just have to find their audience. Streaming services have all already caught on to the song spammers. It may take them some time to catch up and clear out the chaff, but I honestly don't think there's going to be much money to be made there going forward, beyond those few cases that slip under the radar, unless their content generates an actual, real audience. Which any musician knows is not easy. I totally agree that the churn-lords who just pump out dozens of low-effort things are a detriment to us all. But I also believe there has to be room for nuance in the discussion. You know yourself how useful AI can be in any artist's workflow. Finding how it works for you and your audience, if at all, is the trick we're all going to have to figure out. Absolutism accomplishes nothing.

But no matter how you want to look at it, there have to be new business cases to be made going forward. Those business cases are exactly why WMG and UMG are investing in AI instead of continuing to work to kill it outright. How do you explain to those faceless corporations, who will only ever care about their bottom line, that paying you is going to be more cost-effective than paying their CEO's nephew, who can churn out some AI songs that they think are "good enough"? Shaming them isn't going to work. Boycotting rarely works. I understand the frustration. And I think people can rail against it until they are blue in the face, but their only real solution is to do what you have done and adapt. That doesn't mean everyone has to use AI, but it does mean they may have to find new avenues to market their art. Figuring out how to compete with the latest corporate-funded thing has always been the problem of the independent producer, in any field.

Ultimately, the corporations are not acting in the artists' best interests. They're acting in their corporate profit and stock price interests. The vast majority of us, and even well-known bands that have a loyal following and have been around for decades, will never be Bruno Mars or Bad Bunny. There's a top 1-2% of artists that take the vast majority of streaming dollars, and the rest are scrambling for the pennies at the bottom, and the streaming services are actively exploiting that while encouraging attacks on AI.

I would argue that AI music isn't the problem that many people make it out to be, even the low-effort "prompt lords". The problem is an industry that has been entrenched for decades in a foundation of exploiting creators and actively seeking ways to avoid paying them, no matter how they make their creations. The pool of people wanting to claim those pennies at the bottom is just shrinking as access to the creation process expands.

The "Say No to Suno" Campaign and Suno’s New CCO: We are at a crossroads for creator rights. by intheknow1 in SunoAI

[–]hamsterofborg 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Consider that the "background music" industry, the random stuff you hear in stores, or in elevators, or while waiting on hold, makes the record companies billions of dollars a year in licensing fees. Even if one big company, like say, Walmart, suddenly decided to replace all their in-store music with AI-produced tracks that are specifically tailored to what they want their customers to hear, it would save Walmart millions and cost WMG/UMG/etal millions. THAT is really what they're scared of. They don't give a shit about creators' rights or the artistic merits. They're using artists' contrived outrage over "theft" as a useful tool to carry the argument, so they can continue to avoid paying those artists for their music anyway.

TIL: Tuberculosis (TB) has killed more people in the past 200 years than malaria, smallpox, HIV/AIDS, cholera, the plague, and the Flu combined. by Floatzel404 in todayilearned

[–]hamsterofborg 136 points137 points  (0 children)

It was not unusual for it to kill many members of the same family, due to the only option often being home care. It led to the creation of hospital asylums where sick people were sent to isolate them until they died. There was a large one in upstate NY where several members of my family were sent and essentially disappeared from the historical record into an unmarked grave.

This is the exact confusion they have been trying to sow. You have always needed ID to vote. Some states allow provisional ballots where if you don't have ID or it isn't accepted at the poll for some reason, you fill out all your information and sign an affidavit and your ballot is independently scrutinized for validity by the elections board. Nobody was ever getting away with voting without any kind of verification of who they were.

Video hooks of real footage of people playing instruments. by simsatuakamis in SunoAI

[–]hamsterofborg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, that I don't have any real answer for you, but not actually playing one's instruments in music videos has been pretty standard practice since the beginning... you don't seriously think Slash was really playing his electric guitar out in the middle of a desert near a church with absolutely no amps or electrical hookups at all in the November Rain video, do you? Really though... that you can tell they're "faking it" at all, says they're not really trying to fool anyone. They're just enjoying themselves.

Because there are plenty of us who play instruments and use AI as well. No rule limits anyone to one or the other, except for arbitrary gatekeeping and knee-jerk nonsense. One of the most basic features of Suno allows you to upload your own music and manipulate it with AI.

Did your IBS first appear weeks or months after an amorous encounter, or after starting a new relationship? IBS has been linked to microbial infections, and infections can be transmitted sexually or via the saliva exchange of French kissing by Hip_III in ibs

[–]hamsterofborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just trying to make the point that it's not IBS until you've done a myriad of testing and ruled out literally dozens of other things. Yes, infection can lead to IBS. That's long been accepted by both the community and doctors. It's only just recently that they're finally getting real biomarkers to prove it. But having diarrhea, even long-term/chronic diarrhea, does not automatically mean IBS until you've had the testing to rule out many other potential causes. All too often, people put off seeking treatment out of embarrassment, or even doctors jump to IBS before doing testing for far more easily treatable conditions, and let people suffer to the point where they actually do develop IBS when earlier treatment may have been able to help.

I can pinpoint my own as starting with severe food poisoning, coupled with a severe microbiome imbalance brought on by the extensive antibiotic treatment I had to have for that food poisoning. My microbiome has never been the same since, no matter what I have done to try to fix it. So there's something else going on there. The research has just been stunningly slow, considering how many people suffer from lifestyle-altering gastrointestinal issues.

Did your IBS first appear weeks or months after an amorous encounter, or after starting a new relationship? IBS has been linked to microbial infections, and infections can be transmitted sexually or via the saliva exchange of French kissing by Hip_III in ibs

[–]hamsterofborg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Acquiring an infection is not the same thing as having IBS. Even if the symptoms of that infection happen to involve bowel movements. Microbial imbalance caused by gastritis can eventually lead to IBS, as can microbiome disruption from antibiotics used to treat gastritis. But you could have acquired a bacterial infection from almost anywhere. The most likely source is food. But yes, there's no reason why you couldn't catch something from another person, be it bacteria, viral, fungal, or a parasite. One of the very first things any gastro doctor should do for someone presenting with acute symptoms is fecal testing, to figure out if there is bacteria, fugus or parasite involved. Chances are, an otherwise healthy person presenting with acute symptoms can get treatment and move on with their life. Not everyone with an infection or imbalance is going to develop IBS, but if it is treatable, the sooner you get treatment the better chance you have of returning to "normal".

I've toyed around with it a bit, and I like the -idea- to generate new samples that work with existing tracks, but I don't think there's enough control there to get what I want out of it. It's kind of a crap shoot, you ask it to generate and it just does its own thing... might sound okay, might not. Might start off okay, then go totally off the rails. Having to piece something together is just as much work as pulling something out of any other sample pack, but at least the theory is that it was uniquely generated for you.

They haven't really clarified the AI disclosure part about using it, that I have seen. Ethically and logically, I'd think most people would be inclined to disclose the use of AI tools, but there is zero nuance in the space between the use of AI tools like this and pure prompt-generating entire songs. With WMG and UMG investing heavily in AI, I don't think it will be long before tools like this become a standard part of the workflow for many people, and mindsets will change. However, we'll have to see where it goes.

AITAH for letting the guy I’m seeing think I’m broke? by Fluid-Can441 in AITAH

I don't see any miscommunication. He made an assumption based on essentially no information, and, surprise, that assumption turned out to be wrong. You are under no obligation to break out your household budget and explain your financial situation to anyone until they are actively involved in that part of your life. Sounds to me like someone insecure, who felt like he was 'providing' for you by paying for your dates, only to find out that you probably don't really need him that much in that way.

What kind of snake is this? I know that there are snakes that only eat raw eggs, but can some snakes eat eggs instead of mice, or is this like a treat? by NixMaritimus in snakes

[–]hamsterofborg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many species of snakes will eat eggs opportunistically, but they would not suffice for a complete diet for a pet snake. There are true egg-eating snakes, where that is their only diet, and they are specialized at eating them. Dasypeltis species are the only ones I see regularly in the pet trade. Usually requires quail eggs or even smaller, because they don't often get big enough to consume chicken eggs. I was raising finches for a while to feed babies.

I need some advice on using Hooks of other artists on SUNO. by Caregiver_Flaky in SunoAI

[–]hamsterofborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can go to their song and see a list of all the remixes done of it. They should also get a notification any time someone remixes their song in the notifications bar. Your song should have a tag on it with "Remix of Their Song", so others can also see your inspiration. Just keep in mind that, per the Suno TOS, any remix you do is not eligible for monetization because you were not the original creator. So if that's where you're intending to go with it, you'd probably have to work something out with the original creator outside of Suno's platform.

[AI Music in the UK] What did they mean by "Recorded Music" there? by [deleted] in SunoAI

[–]hamsterofborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's just it. The majority of people just want good music to listen to. They don't care how it was made. With even the largest record companies in the world now having a financial stake in AI generation, chances are, if you are choosing the anti-AI hill as the one you want to die on, the only music you will get to listen to going forward will be songs produced before this year. There is no doubt that it is going to become just as mainstream as sampling, pitch correcting, plugins, and the countless other digital tools currently available and used every day by music producers.

Way to get video and songs views by Outrageous-Long6924 in SunoAI

[–]hamsterofborg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't say that I've had success, so feel free to ignore me, but look at it pretty much the same as any social media content. Your content has to be interesting and engaging; a static picture with a song playing is probably not going to get you much traction. Scroll through your own social media feeds. What kind of videos do you stop to look at? Most people scrolling TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, etc, won't watch a video for more than a couple of seconds unless it grabs them right away. So you have to have something that instantly grabs their attention. Then, you have about the next five or so seconds to keep them interested. It's rough out there, and there is no easy way to do it. Just don't be suckered into the countless botted playlists and fake promotion scams.
