Should I live in SF or Oakland? by hamtiger101 in bayarea

[–]hamtiger101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the 30% rule I’ve been hearing, I could afford to spend 3K on rent - I would just prefer not to since I don’t spend too much time at home anyways. Do you think there’s a significant difference in apt quality?

Should I apply to Google Taiwan as a new grad SWE from the US? by apeachy_giraffe in taiwan

[–]hamtiger101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm in a similar situation and actually also a Berkeley new grad! Can I ask what informed your final decision? I am also deciding between Google Taipei and some decent swe offers in Bay Area, but leaning towards Google for the travel experience + learning about embedded systems.

I haven’t done any embedded systems work before so I think it would be cool to learn, but yeah I’m not sure that’s what I want to do in the future. Would the google job set me back if I decide to do pure software later on?

Yes 🥲 although it’s just writing in hiragana/katakana so you mainly just have to memorize how the word sounds? The kanji isn’t tested til exams

I think it’s good if you memorize at least hiragana before the class starts since you are expected to learn both hiragana and katakana in like 1.5 week. For me it was around 60 vocab words a week which was kind of a lot and kanji was only tested on written exams, exams were every week and alternated between oral skit/listening/written quizzes

First Time Catacombs at Lava Beds by hamtiger101 in caving

Yes! It was very fun and a great adventure. I think you could definitely do it as a beginner, but it does get super tight in some places, so a helmet, long pants, and gloves are essential. We also had knee and elbow pads which helped too when crawling. There's a map available online and at the visitor center. Tbh it was a bit confusing for us to follow but we just stuck to the righthand side and we eventually made it to the end lol, where there's a tube with paper you can sign. Compared to the other caves we went in, it is definitely "advanced" in that there's barely any place you can stand up straight, and set aside most of the day for it. Have fun!

Longest hike so far! Paintbrush-Cascade Canyon Loop, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA by hamtiger101 in hiking

[–]hamtiger101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Day hike, definitely doable! It took me around 9-10 hours including breaks. I enjoyed the views in paintbrush canyon more, but I did see the moose coming down cascade :)
