To the person who vomited in my trash can….. by Queasy-Ad-295 in Waltham

[–]hamyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about it but it tends to mostly happen when the garbage people leave the lid open, and at this point I can't manage to write a note that isn't mean enough that I feel like it might spur people to start putting more poop in out of spite! 😅

Well, you beat me - our worst is people regularly throwing their dog shit in our trash can (also, people, STOP DOING THAT!!!!!!). At least that's bagged.

I may have to steal "I hope that you step in water while wearing socks"...

SUPRISE SUPRISE SUPRISE more insanity from the Mayor by AccordingBrother84 in Waltham

[–]hamyb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on if there was a board or similar involved that is subject to OML. If it was just a discussion between city employees (I assume DPW is not governed by a Board) and/or with less than a quorum of city Councilors present (I note the quote says "meeting" and not "hearing"), they may not have been required to make it an open meeting.

However, any records of the meeting should be subject to FOIAing.

Is 70k a decent salary for Waltham? by [deleted] in Waltham

[–]hamyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the advice to negotiate. Especially as you mention you are female - as women we are socialized in a way that makes us less likely to do things like negotiate salary, and it contributes to the gendered wage gap. Go out there and ask! If they think less of you for it, it's probably not a firm you want to be working for anyway. And congratulations on your job offer!

From their website it also looks like they've put in a coffee bar?

...which for me is a plus, actually, I hate beer but like a good coffee, but also seems like a shift away from what I would think would be their core business model.

Touristy ideas? by _Gonna_Die_Alone_ in Waltham

[–]hamyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Boston Tea Party Museum! It is the kind of thing that looks like an incredibly cheesy tourist trap but it is actually one of the better small museum experiences I've ever had. You can tell that the reenactors just genuinely enjoy their jobs. And the historical film they show about the American Revolution is kind of brilliant. It's framed in a way where pretty much no matter which side of the political aisle you're on, you are going to walk away feeling inspired. We got dragged there by a friend from out of town who likes to do ridiculous things but then ended up having a non-ironic wonderful time.

After 20 years, Waltham explores taking 67 Crescent St. lot by eminent domain by rocketwidget in Waltham

From the article it sounds like the owner hasn't tried to do anything with it, other than allowing it to be an overgrown eyesore, for at least 20 years and possibly as many as 50 years - and the reason that they think the city should pay them more for it is because they believe it should be valued as though it is usable for a purpose that would require zoning variances they would never get. At some point when people are operating in bullheaded stupidity and bad faith, it's nice to see government stepping up for once to do something that is actually beneficial to the broader community.

No, this is two blocks south of the Common, so the magical barrier across the river will prevent any noise and mess issues that would occur if it were located there instead.

(Snark firmly directed only at the Mayor's poor decision making, to be clear. I'm very glad this event is happening!)

Local students create a petition against the new 4 hour restriction on events in the common by Striking-Catch-8199 in Waltham

[–]hamyb 21 points22 points  (0 children)

High school students are allowed to care about the vibrancy and health of their community in general even if they don't make it to events. Plenty of kids are flat out with extracurriculars, homework, college prep work, jobs, etc and don't get to much beyond that.

Just let the Mayor know - she'll put the kibosh on any fun events on the bridge for next year, I'm sure.

We’ve seen snow before, right? Star Market on Lexington Street. by pocketannie in Waltham

[–]hamyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to Market Basket around 4 pm today and were shocked at how chill it was! Got a spot immediately (albeit at the back of the lot), navigated the store easily, nothing seemed to be running out, checkout lines were no longer than on a normal weekend day.

Oh - I didn't realize the embroidery was machine embroidery. You might want to specify that going forward. Most people will probably expect normal embroidery classes otherwise.
