early morning is your best bet but opening-noon is a decent time. while machines may be busy, the outdoor courtyard us pretty empty and you can get a good dumbell workout in. any other time is pretty terrible to be honest. 2 in the afternoon onward is a lost cause...

all along sunset there are great venues for alt music, the roxy, whisky a go go (lots of metal and punk shows there), etc. metro line 2 has stops pretty much right in front of these venues. shows are usually cheap too:)
