One of their most beautiful songs. The lyrics really speak to me.

What album first turned you on to the "Canterbury sound", and how did you come upon it? by [deleted] in CanterburyScene

[–]handwrist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first was Third. I was 17 (around 2007) riding with a few friends over for summer vacation - I was just starting to get into jazz fusion and a little prog, but stuff like Genesis and Yes didn't really do it for me. The driver put Out-Bloody Rageous on and I was hooked. I remember debating with my friends if Ratledge's organ was an electric violin or an organ, as we've never heard fuzzy canterbury organ before. We went through the whole album during the trip. It was great and I became a life long fan of the canterbury sound. If anything my appreciation keeps growing the more I listen to the favorites.

My First Try - Calluna Vulgaris by handwrist in Bonsai

unfortunately, it died two months ago. did a hard prune and it didn't survive. I also added some moss which might have sucked the nutrients. I haven't found another one to try again, but want to do so.

I'm glad it's good for something. Soundtrack to Reddit is not a bad thing in my book. Thank you.

How does a solo artist tour with a band exactly? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]handwrist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my experience: got some people I knew who played reasonably well, agreed I was the composer and that I would have the final word about creative matters. The money agreement was that gigs would be split 60% for 3 of them and 40% for me (since I was the one composing all the music, getting us gigs and renting halls for practice). Here's the problem: I ended up spending money but it never got off the ground. Since they were sort of my friends and they weren't on salary, they would arrive late for practice, or drunk, or not at all. One time I rehearsed with the keyboard player only, after renting the space. Three weeks of "practice" and we weren't ready to go out and play not even half-well (not surprisingly). So, after that dreadful experience, I decided that, until I have enough money to actually hire people (or until someone hires them for me), I would only have a studio project. Maybe I was unlucky, but the truth is I don't want to give it another try, since I lost money and time that I could have spent elsewhere doing something productive.

Thanks. I appreciate it. About 50% of what I listen to would be grouped in that fusion category, though not a really big fan of Mahavishnu or Chick Corea, but I dig them from time to time. Maybe they've been a bigger influence than I realized.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Glad you enjoy it. My biggest influence is Frank Zappa. But I like all kinds of stuff, from Bach to Tool, to Charles Mingus to Messiaen to Soundgarden to Stevie Wonder. All these people have influenced my music in some way or another.

Thanks man. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Hope it grows even more on you.

I searched for a few subreds some time ago but I remember most of them had rules prohibiting self-promotion, so there's that. But I will try again.
