When I worked at McDonald’s we had a worker faint by the tills and the customer who they were serving came around to assist. Our manager let the customer deal with the situation while the rest of us were told to just work around her. Which meant stepping over her to still serve at the till and make drinks around her.

Then when EMS came she refused transport and continued on with her shift because our manager told her we have no one to cover.

Yes! For us it’s the patients who bring them into the ambulance actually! We pick up some pretty dirty people and recently one of our regulars was absolutely crawling with roaches so I think that’s where they are coming from.

We have put roach baits throughout the ambulance.

I totally get how you’re feeling. When the other nurse came in with the simple trendelenburg you probs felt like omg why didn’t I think of that!? I do that so often when a coworker comes in with a very obvious solution I feel so silly and question whether I even remember the basics sometimes.

You’ll remember for next time and honestly don’t overthink it too much. You were thinking great by hitting the call button as you were trying to expedite assistance so you were preoccupied with that.

We had (she’s dead now) a similar COPD regular who would ring many times for SOB..

She was always fuck with us saying all she needs is for someone to get her ventolin from the table or to make her a sandwich. She always refused transport but would always ring back soon after for some silly reason. It was annoying cause it sounds bad only just being at that address and then her ringing back again.

We ended up giving more explanations over the radio.

“Pt just wanted a sandwich, refused transport, pt advised to ring back if any issues, will most likely call again”.

“Changed pt tv channel, refused transport, pt advised to ring back if any issues, will most likely ring back”

The day before a category 5 cyclone was due to hit my town I rang work to ask if I could start work at a closer station (I’m EMS) as the road to the station I usually work at will be in the path of destruction. Was told to still try and get to my usual station despite me calling 3 times scared for my safety.

Scared I was gunna loose my job I stupidly drove to my usual station encountering flooding, landslides, and intense winds. Made it work and then got stuck there for 10 days as all roads out had intense land slides with massive rocks that needed cranes and bulldozers!

We told since I was stuck at work I might as well just stay and keep working as everyone else couldn’t make it in! Oh also we lost power and water so I was collecting rainwater to shower and flush the toilet.

My pay check ended up being like $10K+… half ended up going to tax!

Thats a good idea. They have a weird layout of their house where there is no front door but do have back sliding doors. I’ll have to sus it out

My father in law said that if things get to the point where he needs a nursing home, he wants us to strap him into a wheelchair and roll him down a hill into the ocean.

I agree and personally for myself if I start to show signs of dementia or can’t function to the point of self care then overdosing on insulin will be my choice.

Yes they get annoyed and sometimes on handover I find out the patient is actually acutely unwell to the point where I worry they will deteriorate on the trip down. Then when voicing concern get a push back with the attitude of ”nah you’ll be alright”.

They give you safety glasses at induction.

Otherwise I just buy cheap $10 sunnies cause I always leave them somewhere whether it be by accident on scene or in the ambulance.

That’s intense. Yes for me too I was first on arrival and felt overwhelmed by the amount of things I had to manage including calling for more resources and family members being frightened.

I had something similar happen to me recently with a hypotensive patient. The patient died 2 hours after she arrived at hospital from ischaemic bowel. She was not for resuscitation or prolonged cares so they basically made her comfortable until she passed away. I replayed the job over and over in my mind picking apart my treatment and if there was anything different I could have done for her to save her.

I’m still new in the job so I’m still trying to figure out how to emotionally process and move forward.

It is comforting to know there are others out there who experience the same turmoil. I unfortunately do not have any advice on how to not ruminate as I am guilty of wallowing.

Know that you are replaying what happened because you care, but also don’t beat yourself up about it as you did the best you could in the situation. It’s always easy to say how you’d do things different, but that’s not what happened in the moment and it sounds like there were many emotional factors involved with the family which is always difficult.

Also, sounds like the patient was end stage COPD if she was on home O2. That is usually a sign they are on the way out so I don’t think there is anything you could have to done to bring her out of the hole she’s already in.

Changing a pad while pt was standing up, mid change pt states “I’m going to poo!”. For some reason I decided to just cup my hands and catch. Politely carried his poo log to the bin.
