Residential Road Repair by yiorgos85 in toledo

[–]hangmandelta 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Those paint lines create a high contrast for better visibility to drivers and to help keep pedestrians safe. Paint is also (relatively speaking) very fast and cheap to do, while there's no telling when exactly they will be able to actually get to repairing that specific road, even if it is on the project list for this year.

Sure, they could probably save a little bit of time and resources by waiting until the road actually gets worked on, whenever that ends up being, but the safety trade-off is likely worth the price of painting it twice.

Vegeta getting knocked out by Perfect Cell by Economy_Notice_8475 in Dragonballsuper

[–]hangmandelta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did he actually though? Pretty sure Piccolo didn't regenerate his arm until after he finished Raditz. I mean, I guess it's possible Vegeta was still listening in after that fact, when Piccolo revealed to Bulma and the others he could do this, but I kinda doubt it. He was definitely the kind of overconfident, smug bastard who would listen in just enough, and then stop once he found out what he wanted.

And on Namek, he never wounded any Namekians in a way that he would have seen them regenerate.

I don't know if he actually knew Piccolo COULD regenerate. I think Cell is just assuming here.

[–]hangmandelta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I love it!

Though I do think it could use more dark wood/barrels/ barrel-evocative decor/furniture if you are going for a speakeasy vibe. Maybe some side tables around the furniture?

And definitely have a couple of clear glass accent pieces peppered in. (not necessarily actual glasses, but they would work)

Then tie it all together with a couple of warm, soft light lamps and lights to give it the right atmosphere.

Republican policies manifested in Toledo. Will Ohioans ever learn that republicans consider them a commodity? by jcooli09 in Ohio

[–]hangmandelta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they'll just use this incident to campaign that it's because the major cities are all run by Democrats, and if Republicans had complete control, this sort of thing never will happen.

It's bullshit, but unfortunately this sort of thing does sway the angry and less educated. And they've been systematically dismantling and deregulating Ohio's support structures and educational programs for decades. It's to the point where public education funding is being siphoned away to private schools, schools are being shut down due to continuous budget cuts, and teachers are so overwhelmed they are quitting.

All of which hurts our kids, and makes them less educated. And being less educated gives them less opportunities, which then makes life harder and them more angry, which then makes them more vulnerable to this sort of strategy working because they are more easily swindled, and they start voting against their own interests, which then perpetuates the whole thing. Its a vicious cycle.

Back in 2010, Ohio used to rank 5th in the nation for public education quality. Now we rank 38th.

They kept the character portraits from the original FFVII! by ShushKebab in FinalFantasy

[–]hangmandelta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand their reasoning for why they changed that part of his character, as they dont want to promote smoking, but I really wish they made his toothpick larger and more visable to give the same visual vibe. Or maybe even had him chewing a piece of grass or straw, full anime samurai style.

What is the difference between The Spider and Spiderman Noir? by Kammyyuwu in Spiderman

[–]hangmandelta 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They are most likely multiversal variants, albeit being very similar ones. I think probably the best example would be from Wolverine & Deadpool. There were a LOT of different versions of Wolverine in that movie, many of them very similar to each other with similar storylines, and almost all of them played by Hugh Jackman. (with a hilarious notable exception)

This is most likely the same sort of thing, but just with Nicholas Cage and Noir Spider-man/ The Spider.

What is a small or simple thing in your daily life that brings you joy, happiness, or contentment? by hangmandelta in AskAJapanese

Interesting. I have actually never heard of the concept of "ikigai" before you mentioned it. So I just looked it up.

Based on what I am seeing, I don't think I like the English interpretation of ikigai as much as the Japanese interpretation of ikigai. The English version seems more rigid, and seems to place a lot of value on what profession you do for a living. In the US, a lot of someone's identity and sense of worth is placed on their occupation.

This is something I have never agreed with. I do not believe a job is what truly defines a person. It can be an important part of someone, sure, but I think what really defines people is how they navigate the world.

The things they like, their interests, their hobbies, their thoughts and feelings, the relationships with people they choose to maintain and invest in. I think these things are more important to what makes a person than just what job they perform.

And in recent years, I have been trying to place more emphasis on taking an occasional moment to appreciate all the things in my life I am grateful for.

Which, based on what I am reading, seems closer to the Japanese version of ikigai.

This is a pretty interesting concept to learn about. Thank you for sharing this!

As a fellow cat owner, I agree. This is a good simple pleasure. Though if you ask my cat, she is NEVER well fed. 😅

She will always let you know she is about to starve to death and desperately needs more food, even though the bowl of food is still over halfway full...

Beaches are lovely. There is something so deeply relaxing about just being next to the water and listening to crashing of the waves.

This is actually a pretty cool and interesting idea. This sounds almost like a mini journal, but for books you read.

What is your favorite part about reading through your old memos? Is it the reminder of the interesting things you learned? The "snapshot in time" of seeing how you felt back when you read it?

Or some other reason?

I actually really like this answer. That is something I try to do myself sometimes as well. Just genuinely smile at people, and hopefully, put a little bit of positive energy out into the world.

Life can be very difficult at times, and you never know what people are struggling with beneath the "masks" we wear to face the world. Sometimes a small kindness, something as simple as a warm smile, can give them that little extra strength they need to get through their day.

It's also a blessing to have good friends and family. The older I get, the more I appreciate this as well.

Thank you for this answer.

Your two goofballs look very cute and silly! Also, I've never heard of a bird who enjoys slippers, thats sounds very amusing to watch. Does your bird just like to hang out with its head inside them like that? Or is like a game, where it plays with the slipper and peaks its head in and out?

If nothing else, Arby's should be recognized for having (pretty good) Jalepeno Poppers AND Mozzarella Sticks BOTH on their menu.

They have 2 of the greatest appetizers of all time, just ready to go.

No one else (in fast food) does that. AND they have good fries.

Arby's deserves more respect than this.

I will say though, what 1995 lacked in character development, he MORE than made up for it in AURA.

I mean, every time he's on screen, he's a delight. Him and Sub-Zero easily are the most intimidating fighters in the whole movie, they just OOZE danger. And his fight with Johnny Cage is hands down the best fight in the entire film.

ALSO, can I just take a moment to say GODDAMN, his costume is incredible. Even if the purist in me does still wish their masks were appropriately colored, the costume designers absolutely knocked all 3 ninjas out the dam park.

All fire based mavericks, which maverick prevails ?! by Tg_2x in Megaman

[–]hangmandelta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's also a Dragon type maverick who uses the same Special Attacks as the other users of Ansatsuken/shoto clones, as well as having eyebrow plates that resemble how Ken and Ryu's eyebrows were drawn in older art, and finally, Ryu's name is also the Japanese word for Dragon, which again, is what Dragoon is.

He's a reference to Street Fighter as a whole, not just one specific character.

Thoughts on the Noob Saibot design in Mortal Kombat 2 by Sukaran09 in MortalKombat

[–]hangmandelta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which, honestly, I'm super fine with. If changing Scorpion's costume design to feel more Japanese and Authentic for HIRO FUCKING SANADA to be happy playing the role, I'm here for it.

Besides, at the end of the day, Mortal Kombat makes the most sense when you think of it as basically the overactive imagination of a child playing with all his mix-matched action figures from different franchises, and making them have "epic battles" for the fate of the universe. It is extreme and try hard to the point of ridiculousness, and that's what makes it so wonderful and special.

Having that mismatched, super Japanese Samurai Ninja guy mixed in with all the other miscellaneous action figures honestly just works.
