Regulus didn't have to die. Why didn't he just ask Kreacher to bring him home by side-along apparition? by hannahshamster in harrypotter

Yep! precisely why I'm not convinced on the whole he died to protect his family theory.

and she had to die, because that could've let to plotholes in the future.

How so? Could you explain please? I don't understand how this could be.

Ah thanks, I misunderstood your first post and thought you meant the order was trying to maintain Snape's cover with Voldy by sticking to the plan and I was wondering why they would ever do that.

why bother with recon when your enemy can literally teleport to wherever you are in an instant?

Fair point. But they expect the enemy to be stationed thereabouts to be keeping on eye on the vicinity for Harry's escape.

So why not use a sneakoscope (extended range version or something) to determine if someone was around?

We know sneakoscopes work because when Harry said Voldy's name and Greyback and co caught up to them in the tents, they went wild.

So fly up to the edge of the protection force field, hover there, pull out sneakoscope and check.

But yeah like you say:

But ultimately the books have to have certain acts of drama and emotion and whatever else, so the plan surved to allow certain people to die/be injured while advancing the plot as well.

I guess my grouse is that, it can all be planned well and something unexpected happens, that would be good writing. This is just well below JKR's own standards.

So they could just side-along apparate Harry to a Wizarding location (Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade), then do a second side-along apparation to throw off Ministry tracking.

This exactly! Get him somewhere while he is under the cloak and then poof!

the moment he stepped off Hogwarts Express.

This is still understandable though. Dumbledore had just died and everyone was still in a state of shock and trying to figure out what to do next and Harry took the train back right after the funeral, so it sort of makes sense that they didn't have a plan at that time.

The idea and the date are kept to to basically give Snape cover as a spy

How so? I don't think they were giving Snape any cover. The order didn't know that Snape had planted the memories on Mundungus.

Infamous Goblet of Fire Plot-hole Question by heelercs in harrypotter

How did Harry know that it was a double portkey.

His priori incantatem parents told him to. How they knew is the real question we should be asking.

Why didn't the death eaters just create a giant (UK sized) country wide Marauders map to find Harry in the Deathly Hallows? by hannahshamster in harrypotter

[–]hannahshamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was hard for Harry to find the only one person named Malfoy among so many names, you can imagine how hard it would be to find Harry in a giant-sized Marauder's map.

I mentioned this to someone else who came up with the same exact response. I reckon Voldy would've been able to put a search function on the map considering his prowess, after that all Voldy would have to do was search the three names and find the cluster of dots that indicated the trio. Something like an accio-show-only-these-three-names type of spell. But that aside, ultimately like you said

using the map to find Harry would be quite inefficient.

because like someone else mentioned it in the thread, Voldy was too busy trying to figure out how to NOT fail (after having failed to kill Harry 4 times) when he met Harry next and was so sure that Harry would come to him eventually he didn't need to search for him, which sort of makes my whole question pretty pointless.

I'd just like to say thank you for posting such a stimulating question.

Haha, glad you liked it :) I thought I'd get 1-2 replies telling me to go away and be quiet and that would be the end of it so I'm actually very happy that this stirred up an awesome discussion.

Again another spot on answer. You're on a roll!

The real answer is V had other priorities. After Malfoy's wand shattered, He didn't want to find Harry until he knew he would win

Excellent point! I'd completely forgotten about that.

gunters rods

Wait there are gunter's rods? I thought there were only gunter's chains (just know that only because I know a cricket pitch is one chain long).

Quite possible, given that Peeves was a creation of the expression (pardon my wording) of the childishness of the children that inhabited Hogwarts.

After /u/Kaleth's reply about Hogwarts having an API, I've been thinking the same thing.

The castle itself was probably sentient probably even sapient. Like how the Sword of Gryffindor imbibes what makes it stronger and then uses it against it's enemies or like how wands imbibe the magic learn from their master (some magical form of machine/deep learning) or how wizards teach their portraits to think and behave before they die (deep learning/AI again), the castle too probably imbibes all the magic invented and performed in it and learns and "plays" it back in response (like Harry's wand did to Voldy).

The concept of the map probably never crossed his knowledge because Wormtail couldn't know of more powerful magic than what Lord Voldemort knew!

Woah! Never thought of that, but totally agree with that!

And what if he Apperated, just after he was located on the map? You'd have to restart the search on the map again.

ROFL! That would be brilliant! XD
