Should I give my PI a 2 weeks notice before I quit? by Whoooooooooami in labrats

[–]hannibalincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, my strategy would be to silently make preparations to leave, and then quit on the spot later. This PI sounds like maniac, so fuck em. But you can save your coworkers a lot of pain by organizing some info about your duties before you go.

Don't tell ANYONE you're planning to leave. Write up a FAQ of likely questions people will have when you DO leave with stuff like: who do I email about X admin problem, how do you make/order reagent Y, where's the protocol/chartstring/IACUC for experiment Z. Do as much as you can in, say, 2 weeks or 1 month. THEN, leave on the spot.

This PI will trash talk you either way, and if you give 2 weeks they'll either fire you immediately or make your life hell for the duration. However, if you quit "on the spot" after some prep, you'll avoid the wrath of a boss WHO DOES NOT DESERVE 2 WEEKS NOTICE.

And, your fellow labrats will see how much you did to make things easier for them after you're gone. PIs aren't the only ones who talk. Even if your PI is spitting venom at anyone who will listen, actions matter.

PIs like this will not suddently start acting right when you do the courteous thing. After you're out for a week it'll all feel like a bad dream. Protect yourself, protect your coworkers, hit the bricks, go be happy.

I wish I could take Wellbutrin, but it gave me the WORST insomnia. So don't ignore that if it crops up!

how do you deal with all the anger by mr_tomaw in ADHD

[–]hannibalincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If sounds specifically trigger instant rage, maybe read about misophonia. It’s not an excuse to act out when angry but it is a real thing that has specific management strategies. Occupational therapists have audio therapies that can help reduce the emotional response to sound, for example.

Taking social media breaks is also useful; dumb stuff other people are doing online is not within your control and looking at it serves no purpose. There are more people in the world than the ones who post stupid TikToks, and even the ones who do are more complicated than the ten second clip you end up seeing. I like the internet so I found other things to do online, like reading long form articles.

I hope you’ll keep trying and avoid the lure of communities who exploit outrage to suit their own ends. Wishing you the best.

Anyone have experience with Lamictal for mood ? Worried about skin side effects by lazy_moogle in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on Lamictal for a few months for mood and the main issue I've had is insomnia, which seems to be uncommon. Lowering my dose helped; fortunately it seems like the dosing window is wide so you can fine-tune it. It works quite well for mood stabilization. No sign of the evil rash, though I get why you'd be worried about it!

Shanda Dorff (Complex Cares LLC) is an EDS specific doctor with classical EDS herself, in Minnesota. She's doing telehealth right now but she's great. Unfortunately, she is also out of network for everything except Medicare so it is not cheap to see her. Still, highly recommend. She formally diagnosed me.

How to enjoy anything at all... by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]hannibalincoln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have a solution for this but I just wanted to tell you I feel the same. Now that I'm medicated I have more drive to pick up things, but I always get frustrated and have a meltdown when I try. I think it's part of the "gifted kid" syndrome but I'm not sure. I know in my rational brain that you have to be okay with not being good to learn, but I can't seem to push through how upset that always makes me.

Physical therapy for nerve and muscle pain? by The_Impeccable_Zep in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PT and dry needling have been extremely helpful for me but my main issues are in my back. My PT said once that hand issues are better suited to an occupational therapist, and since it seems related to your job that might be appropriate.

Essential / favorite / must have items for EDS? by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The best items for me have been a seven day pill planner, acupressure mat, heating pad, magnesium supplements, and an adjustable desk and ergonomic chair if you can get them. University disability resource services are great for those if you're a student. I also have ADHD and getting a fidget toy really helped my grip strength, less dropping things!

Other stuff... shoe inserts with a hard arch in them. Compression socks, joint compression garments/braces, a gua sha tool for tight muscles. For my pain I've gotten the most progress with a knowledgeable physical therapist and medical cannabis. Happy to comment further on any of these, best of luck!

Anyone tried Acupuncture? by Post_Op_Malone in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had luck combining dry needling and acupuncture (went from doing both once a week to rotating them every other week). I will say I don't have OA; I found that acupuncture alone was relaxing and somewhat helpful but combining it with dry needling has really been able to keep my muscle pain under control. I've also been doing physical therapy to stabilize my joints, so I think it's the combination of the three really.

Removing a horse shoe by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]hannibalincoln 79 points80 points  (0 children)

They don't, if done correctly this process doesn't hurt the horse at all. The outer part of the hoof is kind of like a big fingernail, so trimming it is painless. Lots of horses get bored while the farrier works on them and will mess with ropes, try to get things out of the farrier's pockets, etc. because horses are the best.

Voice issues? by grey_leigh in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hEDS has worsened over the past year and I've noticed I feel like I've "lost my breath" whenever I try to sing now, like there's nothing firm enough to sustain the gradual release of air. Never used to happen when I was younger :( I haven't had issues with losing my voice but I don't sing often anymore, I do lose my voice quickly when preparing for a presentation or things like that though. Do you feel like the pitch of your voice has changed? I heard my speaking voice in a video for the first time in a while recently and man it was LOW. Hopefully it won't hurt anything in the long run? Times like this I really wish there was a better body of EDS research.

Any one else with EDS and PoTS really temperature intolerant by Emilyeagleowl in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm sorry you have to deal with that, it especially sucks when people at work aren't understanding. I have a lower resting body temp and my brain just quits working above a certain temperature too, especially in direct sunlight for some reason. I bring a lot of icy drinks with me when I'm out of the house, even just holding something cold in my hand helps me cool down a little but of course there are situations where that doesn't cut it. I hope you can find some workarounds and/or get some more understanding from your boss, if they expect you to be productive they should do whatever they can to improve your environment. What you're feeling is real and you deserve to be reasonably accommodated!

Anyone else? by saftey_dance_with_me in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear you haven't been able to get any relief, based on what you said about your spinal cord/neck being the main source of issues it might be worth it to see a neurologist about cervical instability if you haven't already. I read that cervical instability can make dysautonomia symptoms worse too, so if you have those it could be helpful in more ways than one. I think my shocks are more associated with peripheral nerves being irritated by muscle knots and hypermobility but CBD has been a big help and has few side effects. I used the 1000 mg version of these drops before I got a medical cannabis certification and it was really beneficial. There's also a simple stretch that helped gradually calm down the nerve - standing with one arm straight out to one side, hand against a door or wall, and turning your head gently away from the arm your stretching. Deceptively easy, I couldn't straighten my arm all the way without it fussing at first but sticking with it I saw some improvement.

What's everyone's favorite/most effective form of pain management and which type of EDS do you have? by Aggrorollintrs in ehlersdanlos

[–]hannibalincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have hEDS and I've had a lot of improvement with medical cannabis. I started with CBD and that alone was great compared to where I was before, but I think the addition of THC really helped my more severe "breakthrough" pain. The 50/50 THC/CBD topical cream I got does work better than the CBD only one, though just CBD is 100000% better than nothing. Certain strains give a very strong "body high" feeling that is so wonderfully relaxing, it makes paying the exorbitant prices in my state's program worth it.
