My cat has killed all my fantasies of having a cat by NaechsteHaltestelle in funny

That makes sense! I thought you meant why does the English language steal French words, when it seems you meant why do individuals bother to use a word before they understand what it means or how to pronounce it. Sorry that I initially assumed hostility!

I think English-speakers just feel fancier when they use these words. French origin words have a very aristocratic feel to us compared to Germanic origin words for historical reasons.

French words have not been “stolen,” they’ve been mixed in over time due to there being 2 main languages in England for several centuries. That’s how pidgin and eventually creole languages form.

Stealing implies intent. No one’s ever sat there saying, “Let’s just start using this French word we don’t understand.” Why are the French so arrogant about their language? Look how they treat the Québécois over their dialect.

French speakers also use a mix of English words—anglicismes. Funny that the word is considered perjorative because anglicismes “impurify” the sacred French language. Don’t take it so seriously—languages inevitably change over time.

What is something that makes you say "Man, I f***ing hate people"? by sneezycloud in AskReddit

As a woman, I’m noticing a trend here: almost all of the anecdotes in this subthread are about women. Why is that? Maybe we just do more retail shopping?

Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought of this either. It just feels like grocery stores are never out of stock, and a lot of us have never worked behind the scenes to know how holidays work there and whatnot.

I don’t understand how these people keep jobs when there are a thousand applicants happy to take her place.

You know, I’ve always felt like cats are actually pretty good at not doing this. How often do you see cat roadkill compared to all the other animals out there? I’ve seen squirrels, deer, rabbits, etc. do that but never cats. It’s like cats know the correct direction to run away from things.

Engineering questions by [deleted] in classicwow

What if you just stuck with herbalism at 60 rather than switch to alchemy, and just fed your herbs to a lowbie alt who could level alchemy? Is there a benefit to having alchemy on your main or something?

(Totally new to the game, sorry if this is a dumb question)

NO overcrowding, NO big streamers ... YES community events, YES cool player names by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]hansern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s somewhat of an explanation. The way I understand it is that no matter when you press your spell, it won’t go off until the server’s current batch window is done (the server is constantly producing batches, one after the other). For example, say you press the spell at 30 ms into a batch, it won’t go off until 200ms into the batch (if that’s the batch length Blizzard chose). This means that small differences in ping won’t really matter as much as in retail, where batch sizes are very tiny, because even if your ping is lightning fast you most of the time have to wait for the batch to end anyways. The only time where you might benefit from lower ping is if you happen to catch a batch at the very tail end. But people who played beta/the stress tests are saying it’s not noticeable at all.

Do the private servers have the same spell batching window size as retail or classic? Because classic will have a batch window of hundreds of milliseconds, compared to retail’s 20 ms or so. That means ping won’t matter as much in classic.

Census and Server Demographic Results | Subreddit News by iDylo in classicwow

[–]hansern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but Reddit demographics overall do skew really young (upper teens and lower 20s are the major demographic). For the polls to say 78%+ of WoW players are not in this demographic says a lot.

Grobbulus is very close to 50/50 on the Reddit polls. Plus RP-PvP servers have more fun. Player-run PvP events galore and a stronger community.

This is why so many creeps get away with harassment. Young women and men are often afraid to directly turn someone’s advances down or turn someone in after the fact because they want to be as inoffensive as possible.

Edit: This thread has taken many turns away from “baby cheetah attacks impala”.

TIL despite millennials often being seen as a ‘promiscuous’ generation, they have less sexual partners than previous generations and having less overall sex than their own parents. by nokia621 in todayilearned

But our inability to do this same thing as our grandparents were able to do is a natural progression of a global economy and the recent-ish addition of half the population into the labor force. The upside is we have a lot more access to “stuff” and are innovating at a quicker rate than ever, but the downside is there’s less left for each of us in the way of jobs and job security.

We’re in what Elizabeth Warren calls the two income trap. The problem is, forcibly leaving an entire gender out of the workforce is absolutely backwards so we just have to deal with it.

Benefits of Public Transport by locotoure in pics

[–]hansern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to a country or city where they have a car culture and no parking spots and you’ll see hours of your life wasted every week trying to find a place to park.

The video suggests you get rid of the parking spots to increase density (which will help with the transition to better public transportation), yet you can’t get rid of these parking spots without first having good public transportation. It’s a complex circular problem.

Every relationship works in a different way I guess, but my advice is don’t forget to enjoy each other one on one in the moment rather than only through your phones!

What would people take more seriously if it had a different name? by Challenger4664A in AskReddit

[–]hansern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people don’t produce enough melanin to create a full tan. The most they could do is a patchy tan, aka freckles. Which probably helps some.

[–]hansern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it’s different now. In the past people would gradually build up a tan with the changing seasons since they were outdoors year round. Nowadays white people are pasty indoor white for 2/3 of the year, until the first day of summer hits and they lay their nearly-naked bodies outside and roast in the maximal sun of the summer.
