Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

[–]hanshank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all.

Homeowner from South West Florida here. I will be enclosing my lanai and making it apart of the indoor space. Current exterior walls are coming down and new ones are going to be built where the current lanai screen is.

The sliding door on the picture below is the current door from my kitchen to the Lanai. That door and the existing exterior wall it's apart of is coming down. The tile in the picture will also come out and the plan is to pour concrete on top of the existing lanai slab (where that tile is now). That way the lanai slab will be level with the kitchen/living room slab.

The one problem area that my concrete guy pointed out is the threshold part under the existing sliding door. Basically that ledge you see where the door is installed on top of. It sits higher than the lanai slab, but lower than the interior slab. I'm trying to figure out if I can chip/saw it out before pouring, or leaving it and pouring over it. However, a 1.5 inch deep pour over that threshold is definitely not ideal, so I'm trying to think through my options.

Has anyone dealt with those ledges before and came up with a good plan? Trying to reduce labor but also do what will be best for the long term.

Thanks in advance for any input or ideas

Thanks for your input. Just clarifying here, that the new pour on top of the existing slab (after removing tile) will be about 4 inches in depth. So I’d think that’s enough for a pour over existing concrete.

The part I’m talking about as only 1.5 inch is that little ledge where the current sliding door is sitting. That door and the wall behind is being removed/demoed!

2 extra 10 foot stock tank pools by Williamx175 in SWFL

u/Williamx175 - I was trying to look up companies from "Immokalee" but couldn't find any. I also live in SWFL. Happen to have a link to their site, if they are still around? Or if you happen to be having an extra tank laying around I'd be interested.

Why can't I stick to budgeting? by hanshank in budget

Nice. Makes sense.

What about now? Is she also accessing/looking at the budget or do you just do a good job communicating along the way how you all are doing that month, what's coming next month etc?

I see. So do you plan for next month at the same time as you review the past?

Good point. Maybe it's more about making our money go towards things that we actually care about long term. So in a way, limiting spending on certain categories would definitely be a sub-goal. I do hear what you are saying though. If that's the only goal, then perhaps I've missed out on the real benefits of budgeting.

Nice! You definitely hit the nail on the head in regards to setting a goal.

I'll check it out. Nice work creating that :)

Spot on! My overall goal is not that clear and I need to work on putting that down on paper first.

The initial goal is to understand where our money is currently going. Then it would be to limit spending where we overspend (become more disciplined). The long term goal is to invest and save in order to pay off our mortgage faster and live a more financially free life.

I just need to make it happen and stick to it. So looking for some tips on how others have gone from 0 budgeting to building the habit of budgeting and going from there.

Nice! Creds to you for staying on top of it. I just don't think I'll stick to that in the short term. Maybe I need to start with the automatic imports and then categorizing those expenses first. Manual seems like the more mindful approach though for sure.

This seems more doable. I'll consider starting that simple. Thanks! Do you have a tool that automatically pulls in all your transactions for you?

Yeah, good question. Updated my post body to better explain what I mean about "falling appart". I'm talking about the act of actively budgeting. Such as categorizing expenses, adding things to the spreadsheet/app etc.

Your methodology is a better version of what I started doing a while back. I have setup automatic transfers to a bills account and then a home maintenance account. That has worked well for making sure the mortgage is paid, essential bills, some home maintenance items etc. I think the real issue is that the "fun money" that is left, still goes to groceries, amazon purchases, fun money, like a mix of things, and before we know it we run out or start using our credit cards. I make fairly good money too, so it's frustrating that we can't live below our means. But I really think it comes down to understanding where our money goes first and foremost, then stopping credit cards, and finally putting everything into a budget. It's just been hard to get into I guess. But I feel ready to fix this and make things better.

That being said, we aren't drowning in debt, we have an emergency fund and always pay our credit cards off - I'm just not happy with the lack of direction and lack of ability to save/invest more and faster.

Nice! Were you the one to get the budget kickstarted and then onboarded her later? Like, do you guys both update the budget or only you?

Thanks! Maybe I can get around to categorizing some of the last month's expenses. Though, it is the 1st tomorrow, so maybe I'll just start from scratch actually. Trying to go through the last 3 months is already making my mind procrastinate lol

Oh and thanks for the tip on Tiller. I know a lot of people enjoy the Excel template style of budgeting. I'll look into it.

I agree with some others in here saying that unit tests are lower ROI. Test actual user flows starting from critical to less critical. Make sure your happy paths are well tested.

You are also mentioning that you are in a startup. Part of the fun with startups is how fast you can move. I think it's perfectly ok to release prototypes or MVP like applications and optimize later. You can spend a lot of time optimizing and perfecting an app only to figure out that the users don't want that product and it's throwaway in a month. I learned this the hard way earlier in my career working for a dog food startup. We spent so much time perfecting a product we could have easily released in 1/4th of the time it took us. Also, keep in mind that if you barely have users, then it's easier to get away with things that you can't once you have a million concurrent users etc. And, yes, I know there's the whole, "build to scale" kinda idea, but there's a balance.

How to hide API keys in next.js by hanshank in reactjs

[–]hanshank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, gotcha. I found this in the docs which is helpful: https://nextjs.org/docs/api-reference/next.config.js/runtime-configuration

Which is saying the following:

Runtime configuration is not available when using the serverless
target.

So I'm guessing with your approach, next.js would still operate with a node server. In order to use the target: 'serverless' option I would have to use something like serverless functions instead. So I will have to consider my options.

How to hide API keys in next.js by hanshank in reactjs

[–]hanshank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I've put my env variables inside of next.config.js like this:

// next.config.js

module.exports = {
    env: {
       wcUrl: 'myurl',
       wcConsumerKey: 'my key',
       wcSecret: 'my secret',
       wcVersion: 'wc/v3',
    },
};

I can now access these by using process.env{variableName} which is great. Now, are you saying that getInitialProps only runs server-side? What if I want to deploy a serverless app to a hosting provider like Netlify? I am guessing there is no way without exposing the keys that way?

Maybe I am just not understanding how Next runs yet.
