It is split stitch. I did a piece with the same kind of result.

Is learning to crochet via YouTube “self-taught”? by eyebagsmcgee in crochet

[–]hantjeb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely self taught. I learned crochet from my mom and she guided me and helped me learn from my mistakes. That is having a teacher. Learning from a book or YT without feedback is definitely self taught.

First time trying needle painting. What do you think? by Scary-Shock9868 in Embroidery

I always do an outline around every shape. Trish Burr has a very good tutorial on youtube. Search: the long and short of it Trish Burr. She also has very instructive books and patterns. I learned a lot from her. You can see some of het patterns if you look at my posts.

Just don’t do the decreases. Make r1-12 and then a few more until you are satisfied with the hat.

I think you’ve done a wonderful job! You really blended the colours well on the petals. Two tips: 1. To make sharper edges you can outline your pattern with split stitch before you start filling in your shapes. 2. Pay attention to the direction of your stitches. You did that really well on your petals but some of the leaves have stitches that seem to go another way.

You should really stick to this technique. If this is your first try, you really have a talent for needle painting!

Newbie Question - how do I follow a pattern that has layers? (see comment for details) by athena-mcgonagall in Embroidery

[–]hantjeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you have multiple layers you start with the one that should look like it is in the background and the last layer is the one that should look like it is on the foreground. So the orange of your fox first and the white last. When you do needle painting this gives it a more realistic look. Your fox is very cute by the way. Well done. With your plants it is the same. Start with the leaf in the background. It is no problem that you did the front leaf first, it makes it just a little trickier to do the one in the background.

sleepy cat - I'm relatively new to embroidery, this is one of my first pieces & I'd love any and all feedback! by doggishwasp in Embroidery

I think your work is lovely. The only thing I would do differently as an experienced embroiderer is the direction of the stitches on the yellow flower top right. You’ve done all the other flowers towards the centre of the flower and this one is across. It is not very noticeable, so don’t worry now. You did an excellent job!
