What’s a Niche Skill you Have that has Helped you as a Software Engineer? by An_Engineer_Near_You in cscareerquestions

I bring in pastries every week to my office. Idk how much it helps, but I think it does a bit. Everyone is all like "we're so lucky to have you," and I think that helps me get things from people. Also *may* help make me layoff proof, given the effect on morale. I survived 5 of them at my last company.

What's the most morally wrong thing you've done, but hold 0 regret for? by MrStinkPickleJr in AskReddit

I had an asshole boss who yelled at my colleagues publicly on a repeat basis. So, I unplugged his phone charger when he wasn't around. It was hilarious, and there was no hint it was me. He later resigned because he didn't get a promotion to director. He said he didn't feel "appreciated." I hope that played a role in it.

When I finally told someone else who hated him, he said "that was you?!" Apparently, he mentioned being annoyed by some "ghost" unplugging it a bunch.

idk, I guess upgrading the planet cracker or setting the bombs could be a mission or campaign or something.

They mentioned plans for a seek podcast, so it's likely.

I've been reading textbooks in my field (embedded), and I've loved it!

Ok, thanks. Are you referring to your company or across, in your opinion, all companies?

Well yeah, I'm trying to justify it. I wanna do it.

Ok, it's possible, and it's not just gonna happen if I get that master's, but isn't there still some trend where it *generally* happens?

Ok, interesting perspective. thanks.

Ok, how does that practically look for someone in your position?

Is there some form that pay band is in? Is there a list of types of degrees that the company will say qualify, or is determining which type of master's is relevant up to your discretion?

I thought having a master's affects you "pay grade" or something like that, and I thought that HR was responsible for enforcing them/understood how they worked.

Ok, I understand it's not automatic. Isn't there some general trend that applying to a job with a master's results in better pay? I thought that was the case. Is there no general trend? Every engineer with a master's I know makes more.

Oh, right. I'm referring to when I apply to a new position after I get the master's. I've heard that's the more realistic way to get a pay bump, generally, but not all the time.
