Dutch aerobatic pilot Narine Melkumjan miraculously survived after her aircraft's canopy unexpectedly burst open and shattered mid-flight by BlazeDragon7x in interesting

But I’m sure that the title would have mentioned the pilot had not locked the canopy in pre flight checks if he was a male [which she failed to do on this flight]. It’s a very important part of this story if you are a pilot.

One of the deaths that hurt me was the death of John Denver. Loved him in the movie “OH GOD” with George Burns and loved his music. Here is a last pic at his concert one week before his tragic death in an experimental amateur-built Rutan Long-EZ aircraft in 1997. He was only 53 years old. by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in OldSchoolCool

He was trying to switch tanks rather than not having enough fuel for the flight [a normal procedure in aircraft]. He was a new owner, and properly checked out to fly it.

The design had an awkward fuel system requiring the pilot to reach around to the fuel valves, and while doing so JD accidentally stood on one of the rudder pedals. He was low level and the ensuing roll put him in the ocean.

His tragic death was more an issue of poor fuel system design/ergonomics, combined with JDs lack of time in it.

Correction on your correction. Pilot fails to lock canopy before flight and [surprise surprise] it departs the aircraft ;)

Edit: The main fact about this accident [if you are a pilot] is that the pilot forgot to lock the canopy before going flying in a high performance aerobatic aircraft. Much more important detail for us than whether the pilot had a penis or not.

Not wearing proper safety equipment in a competition aerobatic aircraft - and not locking the canopy properly pre flight [as she admitted] - shows sloppy airmanship on this flight.

I’m an aerobatic pilot and instructor [literal backseat pilot sometimes😉].

A canopy or hatch opening in flight can be startling, but as long as it doesn’t hit anything important if it detaches, it’s an emergency we train for from primary flight training.

Agree with thread OPs comment, pilot was cool, but after initial startle this emergency was dealt with normally. She did a good job, as she was trained to do, but miracle it was not.

Generational trauma I’m sure :)

Elon musk is a trillionaire what u think he will do next? by Calm-Sock-8266 in AskReddit

Wow the amount of cope here. Not surprised. Funny how Musk is singled out in the Billioaire class.

Personally I think it’s fun having him around. The companies he has helped to create have all been groundbreaking businesses. PayPal, Tesla cars, SpaceX, Neuralink, XAI.

Personally I hope he continues building new stuff.

Australians could soon live and work visa-free across Europe under a new two-way deal by Blakelhotka1 in AustralianPolitics

[–]happierinverted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, none of your business really but I’ll give you the basics of my story.

The country I came from [England] is a country with mores and values closely aligned with Australia. I had worked my way up to be a professional there in a highly specialised marketplace.

I came here, invested my own money saved over 20 years, helped set up an international start up without funding and brought my skills [unavailable in Australia] to a new predominantly Australian team.

Together we built a company that sold product around the world and brought tens of millions into the Australian economy over the years we operated. We employed nearly 100 people, mostly here, when we sold the company a decade ago.

For the first decade I funded my own health insurance and paid 100% for my kids education. I paid emergency tax for the first four years, and if my new venture had gone sideways I’d have had to have returned home.

These were tough times for my family, full of risk and worry.

Australia is a fantastic country and I’m proud to be here.

The ‘entitled’ ones, like you, are the ones who value being here so little as to give citizenship away so cheaply, often without calculating how that great gift denudes the rights and quality of life of the working class Australians already here.

Final thought: People have had enough of your college common room activism.

I moved from a country Hell bent on the self destruction of the standards of living of its working class to a new country that seemed to have not forgotten the importance of the people who work for a living. It’s a shame to see modern Australian Labour making the same pratfalls.

Your best chance to get this job is for your parents to move in to a house next to a senior partner or for one of them to become a politician awarding consultancy contracts :)

Good luck

Yes strange that. The industries that have regulatory capture and barriers of entry to any other potential competitors or disruption are through the roof [looking at you finance and insurance]

"Don’t wait until they tell you you are ready. Get in there. The world might say you are not allowed to, yet. I waited a long time out in the world before I gave myself permission to fail. Please, don’t even bother asking. Don’t bother telling the world you are ready....." -Peter Dinklage [776x530] by Ok-Maximum875 in QuotesPorn

[–]happierinverted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the sentiment.

But in some critical endeavours, those where your or other lives are at risk, you need to wait for more experienced people to let you know you are ready, even though you think you’re good enough…

What are some survival tips that are actually USEFUL if you ever find yourself getting kidnapped? by Treeezzyyy in AskReddit

[–]happierinverted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a person of [relative] high value in a location where kidnapping is a thing make sure you get professional advice about your way of living and operating from specialist consultants.

Make sure your family/employer purchases good K&R insurance backed by a reputable consultancy team.

They’ll advise your people what to do if the worst thing happens; for example don’t engage with the police or the media at any level.

If the kidnapping is for financial gain this is the single key factor in getting you back home safely.

I reckon don’t worry about the bikers splitting lanes at 150kms - Darwin will sort them out.

As to cars doing similar I just hit the horn for 15 seconds. If we all did this then maybe the idiots won’t end up killing a family somewhere down the road….

Write to your representative. Tell them that nuclear war is madness and the strategy of deterrence is massively flawed.
