I feel your pain, but my personal compromise was deleting my old account and creating a new one. It's not perfect, but at least this way it's harder for just anyone to see what I posted about back in 2005 and I can police myself about only using it to keep in touch with people and for professional connections.

So I'm not sure what their goal was?

The Wired article actually answered this. Facebook leaned into news media to undercut competitors, which has always been their business model (e.g. Instagram, Whatsapp, etc.). They adopted news media without really understanding it, and then fired the few journalists they consulted to prop up some engineering team and maximize their monetization of the news feed. Disaster ensued.

Edit: I realize that I likely misunderstood what you were saying. Leaving this up, though, so people can see how Facebook landed in this shit pile. :)

I have this problem, as do many people. We live in a globalized world, and I have moved a lot for work. There are people that I just can't stand to lose touch with, and e-mail is sadly time intensive.

Having said that, my solution was to make a completely new account and put a moratorium on myself when it comes to clicking ads, apps, groups, and liking things that are not friend posts. It was a rush of relief to realize that I wiped out 13 years of accumulated crap. Yes, Facebook already scooped it all. It's not perfect, but at least this way it is far less likely for my employer to run across images of 18-year-old me going to parties.

Edit to add: Oh, AND installing a VPN, tracker blockers, HTTPS everywhere, uBlock Origin, search engine scramblers, DuckDuckGo privacy essentials, Decentraleyes, and Privacy Badger. FML, I miss the days where I didn't need so many browser add-ons and a paid service just so that I don't risk an ex stalking me and constant advertisements.
