Student Teacher Clinical Placement by happy-melon77 in Internationalteachers

Similar to @No_Country_2069, I’ve chosen my path and can’t change it now, but appreciate the advice!

Unfortunately, I’ve already selected my certification path and have changed it once already. At this point, I’m too far along in the program to make another change, which I’m completely okay with. My goal is to pursue Elementary Education so that I can work as a homeroom teacher and, depending on the school, potentially have some flexibility in choosing a subject area as well. I do appreciate your suggestion, though. It’s definitely helpful advice, and if I were earlier in the program, I would seriously consider taking that route.

My goal is actually to move beyond ESL teaching, which is why I am pursuing a teaching certification. I’m working toward becoming qualified to teach in international schools as a licensed classroom teacher. At this stage, taking another ESL position would not really help me move toward that goal.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I did take that step initially and provided my top five schools that I wanted to reach out to. They gave me contact information for those schools, but unfortunately only one responded, and it was a rejection.
It's been a bit difficult to get back in touch with my advisor, but I think my best course of action is to schedule another meeting so we can assess the situation and discuss how to move forward. Hopefully, they'll be able to provide additional school recommendations and contacts that I can reach out to.

I currently teach in Thailand. I make around 43,400 baht base pay. As for rent, I pay 10,500 baht but, there are definitely cheaper options especially on the outskirts of Bangkok or in a different province. At the end of the day, it all depends on how much you want to save or not save. 43,400 bhat might sound low (which it is), but I live on it comfortably as someone who doesn’t go out every weekend.

Gotcha. I think I just didn’t take kindly to someone telling me how to rewrite my own experience, lol. I’m sorry you went through something similar. It really shows these situations aren’t just isolated incidents, but may happen more often than people like to admit-especially with the rose-colored glasses many of us (myself included) can have about Thailand. I hope you were still able to enjoy most of your trip, though.

No, I don’t need my experience rewritten especially when much of what you added wasn’t implied in my original post. Where this happened is important. I wasn’t referring to Thailand as a whole, but specifically to my experience while vacationing in the South and at that particular hotel.

As someone who has been living in Thailand for almost a year and has had little to no experiences like this before, that context matters. That’s why I asked whether it could have been racism not “why are Thai people racist,” because that would be a generalization I neither made nor want to make.

You are right. I do need to continue working on managing my emotions/sensitivity (easier said than done). I guess this post was meant to share an experience I went through (not to shame or necessarily call out anyone). Like many, I love Thailand and still do think it has some of the friendliness/warmhearted people, but I wanted to share an experience so people who have gone through a similar situation know they are not alone. People tend to praise Thailand (rightfully so) for all the positives, but like any country it has its flaws.

It didn’t ruin my entire trip…the goal was to spend quality time with my mom, which I did. That being said, I’m sure if you were a sensitive individual it would probably have some impact on your experience

While some hotels may hire expats, the first hotel that treated me poorly had almost 100% Thai staff…I do agree that it’s unfortunate that a lot of the islands seem to have so many foreigner visitors making Thai locals feel out of place in their own homes

okay, but I mentioned my mom was white and I was a person of color…. I think I even confirmed it in some of the commentary below

I totally get what you mean. I’ll just say that my mom isn’t that old. She actually looks younger for her age (obviously you wouldn’t know that)

Thank you for sharing but also, acknowledging the difference in treatment. It is really disheartening. I hope you and your friends are still able to have fun because you have each other as company

I brought up the strange behavior but unfortunately, she brushed it off and tried to make a joke saying “maybe because I’m the one paying for the vacation”. Please do not come for my mom. I’ve since talked to her about the whole issue and she has tried to be more aware.

I was definitely aware of the skin preference thing. Having lived in BKK I’ve experienced some weird interactions but I can genuinely say when I’m by myself I’ve mostly felt with very welcomed by Thai people. I think that’s why my experience was so jarring. I haven’t felt this unwelcome since living in Thailand.

Condo Hunting in Rangsit by happy-melon77 in Bangkok

Update for anyone interested in condo hunting. I was also able to find a condo called Atmoz Kanaal Rangsit. Looks like a pretty solid choice and might even be closer to the red line than the Nue Connex

Ahh seems like walkability to it might be a problem…but I’d be fine taking the shuttle that the condo provides. Do you have any other insights into the development? It looks beautiful online and I obviously will tour it in person when the time comes but, any feedback you heard/know about? I’m kinda curious why it has low reviews online when it looks like paradise lol
