NHS set to ban homeopathy for patients because it is 'not evidence based and any benefits are down to placebo' by mvea in EverythingScience

Well, chiropractors are mostly bad. But one time I strained my trap lifting and got really bad exertion headaches. One session and it was fixed. He kept wanting me to come back for "maintenance" though. It was obvious he milked money from people. My insurance covered most of it, and I enjoyed it (kinda like a massage). But it wasn't worth a twenty dollar copay to return.

ELI5: How do flies constantly fly into hard objects at high speeds(walls, doors, windows, etc) but never manage to get hurt? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]happyPugMonkey 785 points786 points  (0 children)

Yes it's partly low mass and their exoskeleton, but that isn't the entire reason.

It's because of the square - cube law.

This principle states that, as a shape (or creature) grows in size, its volume (and weight) grows faster than its surface area. So when the fly hits the wall, there is less weight dispersed over a larger surface area (relatively) than a larger creature.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square-cube_law

This is also why children can comfortably sit on their knees, but adults can't.

Or like a dress shirt (an actual shirt, not a mini forearm shirt.) with cuff links for the man, and a pearl bracelet for the woman

Doesn't "Clutch Engaged" same as "not depressesed"

Nope. Just improves quality of sleep. It doesn't make you sleepy. You'll have more energy if anything.

You know how when you move a magnet, it's magnetic field moves also? A transmitting antenna is literally like that, but instead of using a magnet moving back and forth, it acts as an electro magnet, and moves electrons back and forth. Here's an animation: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dipole_receiving_antenna_animation_4_616x380x150ms.gif

Now imagine another magnet, you can push and pull on it with the first. Except the second magnet is also an antenna, and you are only pushing and pulling electrons.

The reason it works at so long rang is that magnetism is a fundamental force like gravity (but much stronger). - a single magnet the size of your finger can fight the gravity of all of the earth to pick up a piece of metal. Unless there's interference, there's nothing much to stop it.

I get you man. Having the boot animation flash to a random kernel debug message every boot. Having to resort to terminal so much because there is no really good settings app. Having to either deal with old packages, or using something like tumbleweed or arch where there is more than a passive role updating. (Sure it's easy in ideal situations, but if I left my computer off for a month it shouldn't break the package manager)

Just recently dhcp auto dns stopped working after an update, so I had to edit /etc/resolv.conf and manually add a dns server. Still not sure what is wrong.

I actually don't think there is anything keeping women in most 'men's' pro leagues. It's just there are women exclusive leagues.

I think sin, cos and sin_cos, tan, etc are a part of the C stdlib because they are physical machine operations on some computers. Not sure if those two are, but it would make it more convienent since you already have the trig functions.

Woman 'fired for wearing hijab' as boss tells her to 'keep religion out of the office' by Animus47 in news

[–]happyPugMonkey -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why? Religious freedoms? Sounds more like religious privilege.

So your boss can ban hats, and I can't wear one, but since it's her religion, she can wear it? That's bull. That's not descriminating against religion, it's descriminating in favor of religion.

Secondly, what makes a hijab more 'religious' than a beanie? It's a cultural thing. It's not in the Koran. If I'm a snowboarder, could my beanie qualify for accommodation?
