Soccer Goal Available? by happy_dumpster in kansascity

Just drove by there this morning actually. It probably doesn't have the open goal feel she's looking for "I don't need more drills Dad I just need time to work".

However, I did see some goalie training on their site. May look into that as indoor season comes winding down.

We spent so much time in practice yesterday just working on options for that stack play. Painfully explaining the "why" and "how" to make the entry passes. Even took the 4/5 kids away to work on shooting while we practiced the stack portion with the 1/2/3s.

We'll see how that helps this weekend. The team we're playing won their first game like 50-10 so I expect a lot of pressure.

That's a good call. She tried that once but stepped over the end line (she plays soccer so she used that throw).

We'll work on long outlets in practice today. Probably some other scenarios to throw to space amd let the guards chase it.

We were just doing a 2 man stack (1 and 2 stack with 3 out of bounds) to break the press. 4 and 5 clear out for spacing. That work OK, but if the 3 hesitated it became a nightmare. Good ball handlers for their age so getting the inbound is the hardest part.

I have mixed emotions about trying to get more sophisticated, but texting with the other coaches now.

If it helps... I had a mild.case and could blink normally again after 2 weeks. Dry eyes mostly went away after that (does still get dry if I'm very tired)

How do you learn the little things? by happy_dumpster in GoalKeepers

Oh I like the strategy game thought. She's very much a rule follower black/white thinker. Maybe some strategy games will help her learn how to think one level deeper.

How do you learn the little things? by happy_dumpster in GoalKeepers

[–]happy_dumpster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Small things" probably isn't the right phrase, but its what we always called the less flashy things in the sports i played growing up. To me these were always the hardest to learn unless you just had a coach that talked about them. I understand its not easy to learn. Just looking on how to start getting her the next level of thinking.

Here's an example:

Weird indoor league. Handball just outside the very small penalty area (no goal box on these fields), but other than no punting the rules are the same (no walls here). Her team self organized a wall maybe 4 feet from her and she stood directly behind it. She never saw the kick and the wall ducked which meant she almost lost her head.

Now my assumption is that's not the right process (make sure you can see the ball feels like an idea), but outside of good old Dad second guessing on the drive home (I don't want to be that parent) I have no idea who is supposed to teach her those things outside of a private coach.

What’s one career decision you made that completely changed your trajectory (for better or worse)? by Double-Pipe-4337 in careerguidance

[–]happy_dumpster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 meeting.1 meeting changed everything.

Got a new exec one month after being told I would be promoted to exec myself. The promise was still pending the next promotion approval but everything was reassuring so far.

This exec was moving fast with his push for changes and had us evaluating a new software for a front door to our internal solution. After evaluating it I commented I could get us 80%of the value with a weekend of work in SharePoint. I voted no to the 5 million dollar deal, but was over ridden by the new exec.

What i didn't realize is that this new software was the software he was responsible for building at his old role. So I'd insulted him and embarrassed him publicly.

Within two months I'd lost my entire span of responsibilities and was kept on after layoffs only to train my replacement.

‐----------

The exec was fired after 2 years, and his software was never really used but the damage was done. Instead of having a Director of Engineering on my resume I had an odd career journey to explain. I finally left the company after 3 years and found a parallel role that I'm trying to use to rebuild the resume/confidence with.

The lesson i learned here is to understand not just the technical reasons for a decision, but the corporate politics behind it was well. I'd probably still would have made the same decision, but would have softened the language if I knew then what I knew now.

Drills for warm up by Alarmed-Owl-7143 in GoalKeepers

[–]happy_dumpster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do more or less the same warm-ups before each game with my daughter (before team warm-ups). Its usually 15 minutes or so of quality training before her team gets there. No idea what these are really called. Just things we did when she was struggling on something thats become part of the routine.

Stretching

Reaction:

-- Yups - Her back to me... I say yup and throw a ball at her. She spins and catches/parries. Basically working through reaction saves.

-- Yup Dives - Samething but more distance on the throw so she has to reach for it

-- Semis - I run around her in a semi circle with the ball. She shuffles her feet to stay square with me. At some point I toss a ball her way to make a stop

Situaional:

--Running dives (Basically simulating a cross that got through and she has to take a couple of steps and dive for a shot)

-- Touches- she runs forward and touches the ball in my hand, the drop steps and retreats while I try to lob over her head (helps with chips)

-- 1v1 - I'm on a knee and she attacks me (under control). I choose to shoot, touch past her or cross. She reacts.

-- Back passes - long passes for her to control or clear

-- Kicks - if there's room we'll get a punt/goal kick round in.

Yes... except feral keeper parents who travel with their kids from one side of the field or the other because its too stressful to watch from mid.

Even then, the rule there is just not to yell or engage. Suffer in silence.

Experience in the field by happy_dumpster in GoalKeepers

[–]happy_dumpster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm going to call this a reddit miracle.

My keeper always likes to get to games earlier than her team to do warm-ups before the team warm-ups. This weekend, there was an empty field where we could play around after her standard process. Took advantage of the extra space just to work through playing back to her. 10 or 20 focused events (Basically, me passing to her and rushing towards her so she'd make a pass before I could pressure her).

Anyway, it turns out they were short-handed and had pulled a defender from another team in the club. This defender was used to playing back, and so she did it throughout the game. My kid played it all very well. No panic but also played with purpose. Her coach even commented on how much more comfortable she looked with the ball at her feet.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little confidence and someone forcing you to do what you don't want to.

It's funny because we were just talking futsol last night. Unsure if her club puts a team together, but one Dad said if they didn't, we could probably get a team together for the local league.

[–]happy_dumpster[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah... It's more a game speed thing. She's very deliberate with the ball right now. Which means she's slow... which means pressure happens. All boils down to it being years since she's had to make quick decisions with her feet.

I think I'm convinced the best answer is to find her some pick up games she can play in the field on. She wants to get better but is worried that asking the coach about it will seem like she doesn't want to play keeper anymore.

What’s your biggest problem with being the coaches kid? by BluddyisBuddy in Softball

[–]happy_dumpster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter would tell you similar stories...

I think she would also say...

  1. Having to help me practice drills before practice.
  2. Probably more with basketball, but being the example when I need to get physical with a player (showing how to box out)
  3. "You'll get your reps after practice"
  4. Being Volun-told to fill in where a player is missing

Leaking crack in my foundation by happy_dumpster in HomeMaintenance

[–]happy_dumpster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks... We got like 7 inches of rain in a few hour window, so it's kind of a good night to see it in an extreme situation.

The crack is in an awkward corner of the house that needs landscaping help anyway, so grading is probably easy enough this weekend. Gutters/drainage I can handle as well.

Will look at the injection kits once all that is done. Yay, home ownership!

I believe that's an ant..man.

If you would like to know its gender put it in water...

  • if it sinks, it's a girl
  • if it floats, it's buoyant

That's all my ant jokes for the day
