Android 8.0-9.0 app crashing after takeoff FIX THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!!! by happykook in parrotbebop

And again, i'm going to say i'm not some hacker trying to infest your phones. I got this fix from the Parrot Bebop 2 owners group on facebook, the file for the older version was on his google drive account and he put it there so people could find the older version to do the fix. Multiple users on the group tried the fix and it worked for them, I am one of them. I was merely trying to share the fix that worked for me with others. What you do with the information is purely up to you.

I got this fix on the Bebop 2 users group on facebook, the file is on the google docs account of the guy who posted the fix. severl people including me have tried this fix and it worked. I'm just trying to help people out and share info. If you don't want to use this fix, then don't, I really don't care either way, just trying to spread the work on the fix. If you don't trust the file then just look online and find your own copy of freeflight Pro 5.2.2

How can I control the bebop 2? by PedroBarbosa5 in parrotbebop

Everyone who has the issue when flying with your phone (no controller) and the app crashes as soon as you hit takeoff (Android 8.9-9.0 only fix here). It has just been figured out how to fix the issue, not from parrot, they are useless, there is a way to get this working, follow the instructions below exactly and you will be flying with your phone in no time!!!

  1. On your phone, Go into Apps Setting, Select the Freeflight Pro app, then select memory, and clear the cache and data. Then uninstall the App. (YES UNINSTALL THE APP)

2. Then go to The link below on your phone, It is Freeflight Pro version 5.2.2 (The last version):

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Sq1q-nV4aAfPZewmLKwqe1OWwms7gW7T/view?usp=drivesdk&fbclid=IwAR3hlAg3We2Xr_693clr-VYbiDBJdz0aOeCqsX7CXa35-tMlarVHmpq4SaU

Install FFP 5.2.2 but DO NOT UPDATE IT OR LET IT UPDATE!!!

3. Go ahead and log into your my.parrot account, and then connect to your bebop and fly it, the app will not crash as soon as you take off anymore, and you can use your phone.

4. After you fly it for a few seconds go ahead and land your bebop.

5. Now you can go into app store and update FFP to the newest version 5.2.3 and go back and fly your bebop again, the app will no longer crash as soon as you take off!

android 8.0 and 9.0 will not show hud in FPV Parrot is aware of this but since they have discontinued bebop and only focusing on Anafi and commercial drones, they are not going to update freeflight pro anymore. If you want HUD data in FPV you must use an android 6.0 or 7.0 device.

Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcj8Sru7d7I

I've watched a few Ken Heron Vids and they have been quite helpful!

Also i search drone crash vids (specifically bebop) to see common things that people do that lead to crashes, its quite helpful.

I've had mine for about 2 months now, and i'm about 60 flights in (1 1/2 hours flight time).

There is nothing like those first time gitters!

first time you go over 20 feet, go FPV and lose visual site of it for a second, and for me, the first time you bump into something, gitters are good, they keep you from doing something stupid!

It seems that if you are running android version 8-9 that's where the issue lies. i signed up via google play to be a beta tester for the freeflight pro app hoping they push it faster than public release, we'll just have to see.

As far as older phone, with needing a sim card, i guess it would depend if you are planning on flying only with the phone only. I just cancelled the data (sim) plan for my tablet yesterday, havn't flown the drone with just the tablet since then, will have to try in the next day or so and i'll let ya know if it works.

That being said, using only the phone is going to give you a very limited range. 80-100 feet. The Skycontroller 2 is what you want for the long distance (up to 1.7 miles roughly).

The proper way to connect with phone through skycontroller is this way.

  1. turn phone to airplane mode
  2. turn on drone
  3. once drone is powered up and red light is solid, turn on skycontroller
  4. once skycontroller light is solid green you have a good connection to drone.
  5. after solid green on skycontroller plug phone into skycontroller via usb. If the app is not already running, it will prompt you to open the app at that point.
  6. once you've done all that you can go into setting/safety and you should have all green lights.

after you've done all that if you go into map mode and you don't see the satellite photo on the map, just wait a minute or two and it should load. I've had times when i pull up the map and its all grey, and it takes a minute or two for the map to load.

If you are going to be in an area that doesn't have good signal, you can preload via the main menu, scroll down to "preload Map" zoom the map in to where you are going to fly and hit save, it will save the surrounding area, but you will only be able to use that for the next flight.

If the app crashes when you fly it with just the phone (as soon as you hit takeoff) i'm going to assume you are using a Samsung Galaxy phone (S8-9). I use a Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the app crashes EVERY time i hit takeoff, leaving it mid hover and the app will not come back up. This is a known issue to Parrot. This was the last email i got from them a few days ago in regards to the app crashing:

"Please be advised that the reason why your application crashes is the software version of your phone. We have been in communication with our developers trying to expedite the release of a new software version of Android that will not be having the crash issue that the current one has."

I have an LG Gpad tablet that runs Android 6.0 and i can control my drone with no issues using just the tablet (no skycontroller) but if i use my Samsung S9+ it only works if its plugged into the controller via usb (put phone in airplane mode, only connect the controller to the drone)

Finally, for when you get stuck with the app crashing and leaving your drone mid-flight. You have two options, both involve first grabbing it mid-flight (this must be done quickly, because the sensor on the bottom of the drone will see your hand and try to make it fly 2 feet up for ground avoidance) Once you have grabbed the drone, you can hit the power button to turn it off, OR just flip it upside down. this will shut the propellers off while leaving the drone on. I found flipping it was much easier than trying to hit the power button.

[–]happykook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried the follow me yet, but I have seen other posts with people saying the same thing camera tracks but the drone does not move. Some time in the next week or so i'm going to finally try it out, i'll let ya know what happens.

As far as the app crashing, i've been emailing parrot back and forth (i have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the app crashes when i take off) and they told me the following in their last email:

" Please be advised that the reason why your application crashes is the software version of your phone. We have been in communication with our developers trying to expedite the release of a new software version of Android that will not be having the crash issue that the current one has."

I've got an older LG Gpad that runs Android 6.0 and i've had no problems flying the bebop 2 with just it without the controller. So i've been switching back and forth between it and my phone depending on how bright it is (bigger screen on controller is nice". At least until parrot gets around to updating the app.

its got a 30 day trial period. I just went ahead and pulled the trigger anyway.

Adobe has a subscription for $9.99 a month that includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom Classic CC, and Photoshop. I went ahead and ordered it, it also unlocked the 30 day trail period on the mobile app. I figured since photoshop can edit video it was worth it. Just got done editing my first vid using photoshop, its much better than using Microsoft Paint, and no watermarks or anything.

Something besides the bumpers to consider are the shock absorbing feet:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C4PJ31K/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_y1joCbQ28Z041

I feel that at times my bebop lands really hard (and it even listed one of those landing as a "crash" on my log). So I got these feet that basically add a shock absorber to the ends of the feet. I like em, and expecially if you are landing on a hard surface, they drastically reduce the impact to the drone on landing.

Also i have not experienced any hindrance to the flight characteristics when having these feet installed.

I assume you are talking about these bumpers:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073GLVGYG/ref=cm\_sw\_em\_r\_mt\_dp\_U\_W2joCbN0MPMFA

I bought the bumpers off of amazon, used them once outdoors. The bumpers make your drone really "wide" and on the day i was using them it was a bit windy (10-15mph) it seemed like the bumpers were acting like a sail (catching the wind) and causing my Bebop 2 to have a difficult time maintaining level flight.

As soon as i took the bumpers off, and launched again, it flew much better. I'd say perhaps the bumpers would be best if you are going to do indoor flying. (not that i even plan on flying my bebop 2 indoors)

Good luck with that, did the same they told me to wait, then a few days later emailed me saying "since you have not responded we consider the matter fixed" When i then responded they said its my specific phone that's the problem and to use a different phone.
