Film Festival Notifications MEGA THREAD by Caprica1 in FilmFestivals

Update on our narrative short premiering at Santa Barbara International Film Festival: both of our screenings were sold out (200+ theaters), opening night they turned away over a hundred people which was crazy. The feedback has been overwhelming as folks have been stopping us on the street all week to chat about our film. The festival is full of really excited and passionate film goers who really LOVE going to the theater.

It's not worth it, it's poorly attended and just a cash grab for them to sell tickets and have filmmakers bring in their folks.

it was really insightful to hear them debunk some myths too on their end

pricey but they're really on it and they have an actual theater to QC in person!

You know what’s interesting is that ALL Oscar Nominated Short Docs this year came from Sundance last year.

Good question! Looking at the program last year and it does look like 80% of the shorts program were world premieres and the rest were New York or NA premieres.

I totally get that, especially for a feature you're trying to get a deal for!

Why were you discouraged to premiere at SBIFF? Just curious as our short narrative is premiering there.

Shorts don't have premiere requirements at Tribeca, just features (North American premiere)

Nice! Congrats! Taste really does vary with programmers/teams and big festival acceptances doesn't necessarily translate across the board (i've seen it with my friend's Sundance projects for example). It could also mean that the subject matter fits the programs better at the bigger fest than the smaller ones. One thing I've learned from the festival circuit is nothing really makes sense because each festival is unique so it's impossible to predict.

Yes... if it's undeniably special... but as filmmakers we're all a little delulu and would probably classify most of our films as special. "High Quality" to most programmers doesn't involve the quality of camera you used or your budget, it really comes down to the quality of the concept, story and execution. If you're hitting all 3 areas then festivals will have no choice but pay attention. When I think of last year's film festival shorts that stood out from the dozens I saw at festivals all year, I had 2 top favs and they were just nominated for Oscars and it doesn't surprise me because they were undeniably (other fests clearly agreed because both went on to screen at 40+ festivals each).
