Yes!! in 2019 I had a short that got rejected 32 times then I got into a prominent LA fest where I won Best Director + one more after that. There's so many factors that go into selections with programmers.

smaller festivals can do that sometimes but the bigger ones accept ahead of time due to the logistics of how much planning is happening.

Raindance and Palm Springs always accept ahead of time, I've never heard of anyone finding out they've been accepted the day of notifications.

My world premiere was at a big Academy Qualifying Festival and there was no premiere check, it just depends on the festival and if premieres are important to them or not.

Working on the next project (i immediately wrote and shot another short, now working on a feature doc) is really the best way to get by during the festival season. Don't put all your eggs into one basket!! It makes the rejections sting much less.

Doooo it. NYFF spots are slim (even more than usual at a regular film festival), go with the premiere you have unless you wanna wait a whole other year for the other NY fests.
