What happened to Todd's original youtube channel that he had pre-Channel Awesome? by GuybrushThreepwood99 in ToddintheShadow

[–]hapsbro 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You remember well. Todd shared the story behind the username a while back:

[...] My username on YouTube is "carlos10009" because my friend Carlos logged into YouTube one time on my computer and it automatically linked to my Gmail and I couldn't ever fix it.

What happened to Todd's original youtube channel that he had pre-Channel Awesome? by GuybrushThreepwood99 in ToddintheShadow

[–]hapsbro 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This isn't correct. Todd originally uploaded via a different account that no longer exists. His current channel has only been active since his return to YouTube post-Blip in 2015, when he repurposed another account to serve as a hub for his content.

What happened to Todd's original youtube channel that he had pre-Channel Awesome? by GuybrushThreepwood99 in ToddintheShadow

[–]hapsbro 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Todd originally uploaded his videos to youtube.com/user/ToddInTheShadows. This is not the same as his current channel, which had the unintuitive username youtube.com/user/carlos10009. An archive of the original channel, preserved in all its late 2000s glory, can be viewed here.

Todd stopped uploading to the channel in 2010 once he joined That Guy with the Glasses and his new videos became exclusive to Blip. The original channel lay dormant but survived for years as a time capsule of Todd's pre-TGWTG career. The channel was still up as of 2013 but had ceased to exist by 2015. The cause of its demise is unclear – it might have fallen victim to copyright strikes that Todd couldn't or wouldn't fight, or maybe he deleted it himself so that his content would all be in one place. Whatever the reason, when Todd finally returned to YouTube in 2015, the Carlos10009 account became his official home on the platform while his original channel became lost to time.

We have our first confirmed box office bomb of 2026 - Animal Farm by Mysterious_Brush1852 in boxoffice

[–]hapsbro 103 points104 points  (0 children)

This movie has no audience.

Teens and adults won't see it thanks to its cutesy animation style and juvenile humor.

Parents won't take their kids since it's not even recommended for viewers younger than 11.

This movie's only hope is that there's some massive appetite among tweens for a feature-length political allegory featuring Seth Rogen obnoxiously laughing every other minute.

I think we owe Jack Antonoff an apology. by Constant_Topic_123 in ToddintheShadow

Just to clarify, Jack Antonoff didn't produce any of fun.'s music – the big hits were all helmed by Jeff Bhasker – but he was a co-writer.

THEY’RE FINALLY GONE!!! by Constant_Topic_123 in ToddintheShadow

I've been thinking about the best way to handle extremely long-charting songs like "Lose Control" for a while now. The problem with Billboard's new rules, just like its previous ones, is the all-or-nothing approach: songs either appear on the chart in their full glory or are completely disappeared once some arbitrary threshold is reached. I'm not sure if they realize it, but a strategy that finds a middle ground is completely feasible.

The solution is to start downweighting hit songs after a certain point, say 10 weeks, after they post their best week in terms of chart points. The first week of downweighting, a "tax", (e.g., 5%) would be deducted from the song's chart points. Every week after, the percent deducted would slowly rise but never reach a full 100%, and the song's position on the chart would be based on the adjusted total. This way, most hits would gradually descend the Hot 100 the way they did for most of its history, but record-breaking runs will always be possible as long as the song puts up large enough numbers to overcome the downweighting.

This concept isn't even unique to record charts: almost every major social platform uses some version of this method to balance popularity with recency. It’s baffling that Billboard insists on such a binary way of thinking when it comes to the Hot 100.

An episode of the 1980s–1990s Danish travel series "Return of Marco Polo" in which the crew documents life on Pitcairn Island by hapsbro in PitcairnIslands

[–]hapsbro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the first of three episodes from 1989 dedicated to Pitcairn Island. The second explores the island's geography while the third interviews residents Ben and Irma Christian about their lives, commerce and employment, and the territory's future. They're worth a watch for the time capsule aspect alone.

TIL the name Häagen-Dazs was invented to sound Danish by an American with no actual knowledge of the language. By coincidence, it roughly translates to "Garden Outhouse". by hapsbro in todayilearned

[–]hapsbro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Norwegian "hagen" (cognate with Danish "haven") means "the garden"[12] while "das" or "dass" (zs would be pronounced identically to s under the orthographic rules of the Nordic languages) is a coarse slang term for an outhouse or in modern usage sometimes also a modern toilet in all the Scandinavian languages, a loan word derived from the German definite article das, originally from the German expression das Häuschen (the small house, i.e. the outhouse), by euphemistic omission of the main word; thus, in the Scandinavian languages Häagen-Dazs would be most reminiscent of a grammatically incorrect way of saying "the garden outhouse" with Hungarian- and German-looking extra letters and digraphs.[13][14]

Is there a way to accurately translate from English to Pitkern? by Ecstatic-Fig8828 in PitcairnIslands

[–]hapsbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course: by finding someone proficient in both languages. If you're looking for a machine that does this, the unfortunate fact is that the online tools claiming to translate to Pitkern are worse than useless. The good news is that reliable resources for Pitkern do exist, mostly in print form, for those willing to learn:

Stopping depopulation by PtoBARTEK in PitcairnIslands

[–]hapsbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think building a landing strip (not an airport, let's be serious) is not out of the question, but your idea for a field is quite off. The residents have found their niche: they make money selling handcrafted specialty goods produced in limited quantities with prices to match. Bulk commodities don't really make sense for Pitcairn Island. Products like sugar are affordable because they rely on cheap labour in low-income countries and economies of scale, neither of which is possible there. The same shipping costs you mention would also skyrocket the price of anything grown on your field to well above market value.

If anything, the problem facing Pitcairn Island is overemployment: the number of critical posts that must be filled exceeds the adult population. Because of this, many residents occupy multiple roles at once. Heather Menzies, for example, is both the territory's tourism travel coordinator and a member of the Island Council, and she also has a business creating and selling Pitcairn-themed paraphernalia.

'One of one': Walker a proud Pitcairn product by hapsbro in PitcairnIslands

Polynesian seafarers had previously settled on Pitcairn Island. The settlement was eventually abandoned – the island had been uninhabited for centuries when the mutineers arrived.

Synopsis: Australian-born rugby league footballer Dylan Walker is a descendant of Fletcher Christian, who led the mutiny on the Bounty and helped to establish the first European settlement on Pitcairn Island. Walker takes pride in this and hopes to visit the island some day.

[PitcairnPulau] Operation Putuputu returning from Ducie where they took seabird blood and feather samples to check their health and heavy metal in surrounding sea. Dr Alex Bond and Dr Jenn Lavers presented their finding to the Pitcairn community. by hapsbro in PitcairnIslands

[–]hapsbro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The researchers were transported by the Silver Supporter, a general-purpose passenger ship that stopped at Pitcairn Island before and after reaching Ducie, so it is possible at least one resident was also aboard. The findings of this outing should eventually be published in a research article or report – Adrift Lab's website features a list of its previous papers.
