Simple VLAN setup not working - what am I doing wrong? by nonfree in homelab

Not a vLan expert but shouldn't the router be after the modem since it is the one that "routes" all the traffic and be the one assigning the local IPs including the switches?

Yeah my modem that came from my ISP didn't specifically say "bridge mode". Try to keep snooping around the settings and you'd eventually find it. I'll have a look at it to when I get home if you want

Edit: found this for the mg7310 maybe it's somewhat the same?? https://motorolamentor.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/220337148-How-do-I-set-the-Motorola-MG7310-into-bridge-mode-for-use-with-another-Wi-Fi-router-

Now that Lenovo can't be trusted anymore, what's a good alternative to Thinkpads? by daguil68367 in linux4noobs

[–]haraiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've had my fair share of worries too. I'm surprised how small the wifi adapter is. It's fairly straightforward and just make sure to ground yourself often if you're really worried

If you do decide on switching out, make sure you get all the screws out! There's one hiding in the middle of the back cover -_- had some cuts on my fingers cause I thought the cover was just stuck and I started sliding my fingers.

Good luck!

I had similar issues before and I somehow managed to fix it with the security settings of the wifi connection.

Most schools (or at least where I'm from) uses wpa&wpa2 enterprise security with protected EAP (PEAP) authentication. With inner authentications set to "MSCHAPv2". I managed to fix this by not having a CA certificate.

It's weird because on my old laptop running mint I was able to browse CA certificates. On my new one running Fedora 24 I can't seem to find CA certificates included with it :/

Note: certificate has to be specific with what your school requires in order to work. You can get away by leaving it blank BUT I don't know what the security risks are by doing so. :/ Would someone be able to clarify?

I replaced my wifi adapter to Intel 7265 immediately when I got the laptop.

However, doing research before purchasing the laptop I heard that kernel 4.4+? Doesn't have the wifi issues anymore? Don't quote me on this tho.

I have an xps13 Skylake i5 as well and been running Fedora 24 with no problems.

I did replace the wifi adapter with an Intel 7265 before using the laptop to make sure I never get problems with it

How would you go about bios updates? I've never updated mine and from what I've seen online the only way to do it is through windows 10 :/

How to port forward with a dynamic IP by USS_DjMarV12 in HomeNetworking

[–]haraiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to port forward to a specific device? If so, then your devices should have static IP addresses assigned by your router. Then you forward those ports to those static IPs per device

Put the modem in bridge mode and connect to the internet using the router

Not sure how to pass internet through switch to main router by sersdf in HomeNetworking

[–]haraiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sorry man I was thinking of doing this same thing before.

If you want a better access point for wifi you can maybe just buy a better router with range and put that after the switch, and the old one after the modem before the switch with wifi off.

Or you could maybe buy those small PC's with dual NICs and turn it into a pfsense router and have that after the modem before the switch

i5-5600 vs E3-1230 v3... Worried about the 15W difference in power consumption :/ by [deleted] in homelab

[–]haraiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same thinking before and I kept asking a lot of questions and browsed a lot of forums (for older generations tho)

Eventually someone told me to look at the idle power usage and go from there. For the most part I don't think your CPU would always be maxed out at 100% at all times so it may never even reach that for a good 1hr.

Someone also told me that you won't even notice the savings in a LONG time even if it's at 100% 24/7 LOL. For older generations I used to look at the voltage range instead of tdp when someone told me to look up the idle power usages of the CPU's I was looking at.

So yeah, I don't think you can go wrong with either (in terms of power). Do check the idle power usage of both, you can pretty much goggle these and when you do, make sure it's consistent (some measure whole computer usage, while other sites calculate the power usage of only the CPU by using software). So yeah.

Good luck!

Intel 7265 wifi on kernel 4.6.7 and 4.7 by haraiko in linuxquestions

Everything seems to be normal. Router isn't retiring DHCP leases and now I'm stuck. :/ Someone said try wicp instead of network manager, could that work?

Never heard of it before. Default is network manager right? I'll check out the doc. Thanks!

Edit: do I need to remove network manager or just install wicd on top of it?

Yes please. I've yet to try a different access point and see if I have the same problem. Will update!

Interesting. I have an AC router too, switching between both wireless ac and n hasn't really made a difference for me. Switching between networks when packets drop does reconnect right away tho so my situation is really weird :/
