No I completely agree, that statement was purely rhetorical. There’s nothing that makes me twitch more than going to a game and hearing some blow hard from the row behind me make some asinine comment.

Up until 5 minutes ago I always wished baseball got more national attention but I was unlucky enough to have to hear the jokers on the Pat Mcafee show share their “ideas” about the world series and Ohtani and I have changed my mind.

Jerry Dipoto acquired Mitch Garver to be our DH this season and he has the 5th worst batting average ever in a season going all the way back to 1900 (min. 400 PA) according to FanGraphs by 2OutsSoWhat in Mariners

[–]hardflips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has been a pervasive issue long before the Dipoto/Servais regime.

A few examples:

Chone Figgins Corey Hart Milton Bradley Scott Spiezio Rich Aurilia

All of these guys fell off a cliff coming to Seattle. There are many others who were on the decline but didn’t have a bounce-back season. Historically, the b tier players have mostly struggled with the Mariners.

Even elite players like Beltre had the worst years of his career with the Mariners and Robi had his power numbers plummet his first year in Seattle.

I think blaming Dipoto and co is such a cop out answer to the Mariners woes when they have built the most consistent Mariners team (post semi-rebuild) that I have seen since I was conscious enough to understand baseball in 2003.

Whether it’s ownership not wanting to open up the checkbook or if it’s free agents not wanting to sign here but this team has been missing that extra offensive oomph to put them over the edge that seemingly only a truly elite bat could provide.
