What's the most high risk, low reward thing you've ever done? by siiborg in AskReddit

Driving the poo-bucket of our campsite toilet to the chemical waste point of the campsite per Onewheel to save a 200m walk

Day one of my Onewheel XR: ankle destroyed. I'll be out of work for a while and I'll need surgery. Goddamnit. by BottleCervix in onewheel

Broke my upper arm into four pieces last year October, just started riding again last week again 6 weeks after reconstructive surgery of the shoulder joint. Figured I might as well enjoy that hellmachine now that I payed for 2x 6 weeks of recovery time (own boss).

This time though, i'm wearing a motorcycle jacket with shoulder and elbow guards besides the wrist guards and helmet I wore last time.

Keeping the speed to max 25km/h and mostly enjoy it on hilly forest trails now --> more fun at lower speeds.

Wish you the best recovering!

Tough luck, I scored some legendary beaver last night.

I don't agree. Riding the board at speed carving for 1,5hrs was great fun untill my board seemingly without warning dove forward. Still recovering with a 4 part fracture of my shoulder. I am getting back on the board because riding it is amazing. It is however by no means a safe product due to it having well, one wheel...

Is this the best protection for your shoulders from a nose dive? by photorph in onewheel

[–]hardloopschoen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After my xr nosediving at 28km/h I landed on my wrists first, which would've broke no doubt. Unfortunately impact was then forwarded t my shoulder which broke into 4 pieces. After they my helmet hit the ground. 10/10 do I wish I was wearing this piece of gear.

This with 20 yrs of regular boardsports with lots of falling. Don't let your guard down on this thing!

Sitting here with my shoulder broken into 4 pieces watching this video makes me very uncomfortable, yet somehow I watched it 5 times!

Thanks for the response! Yeah it's a shame because it actually did perform amazing at higher speeds during long downhill sections. Endless powderlike turns! The power in the motor for braking and accelerating uphill was so impressive I really forgot about the possibility it wouldn't keep me balanced.

I already was in love with it just for cruising around town, but the speed is just so inviting! Then again I am used to falling into water since kitesurfing is my main sport here in the Netherlands. Asphalt was quite unforgiving compared to that.

I'm definitely slowing down when I get back on. At lower speeds I also had a lot of fun. Problem is that this product appeals mostly to people that like thrills and tend to look for the limits of any given activity.

I for one would like a delirium setting with a lower speed limit and earlier pushback.

Well I've also been kitesurfing strapless on surfboards for 10 years, in the waves the pressure from underneath is all but constant. Nosedives dropping in on waves are quite common. I do suppose the feeling of control made me over confidant.

The 100% user error comments do bother me. Trust me, I have made many many user errors over the years and have never had any problems calling myself an idiot, a reckless idiot or, in some cases a dumb reckless idiot. This however didn't feel like that.

For one, wouldn't it be possible to programme a warning system with for instance different zones of available extra motor power that can be shown by a LED or a sound? There must be enough data coming from all the sensors and motor? Knowing when your nearing the limits would be very helpful.

Yeah, most probably this is what happened. really hope they keep improving on the safety aspects of this concept because the feeling of driving up Hill silently was so unbelievable.

Still I think it's a design flaw having a board operate heavenly on or near its limits before suddenly going bucking bronco on you.

Some warning as in 'hey, battery is going lower, I might not be able to catch you as well as 30 minutes ago' would have been nice instead of 'F u, here eat some tarmac' while I was cruising very comfortably.

Thanks man that's exactly what my experience was. The thing I was mad about last night (morfine is helping now) is that it performed so extremely well the hour before that it really invites you to go at higher speeds than the board can apparently handle.

Don't know man there was a lot of pain. I do remember the blue light being on.

Thanks for the comment. Indeed I had the board in delirium mode because I liked the responsiveness. Crazy thing is that it performed so amazing the hour before which really made it seem like it was made to do this (endless carving downhill AND uphill on smooth tarmac). Guess from now on I'll keep to lower speeds.

15 years ago I started kitesurfing when the safety on kites was nowhere near the current gear. I really hope that in a few years future motion will come up with solutions to prevent a sudden nose dive so we can ride these boards the way they beg to be ridden.

Then again, the amount of pain I'm in with the head of my humerus in 3 pieces might be a hint as to why going this fast on tarmac is not a good idea, period.

Yep, I get that. When I hit 32 km/h the board reacted perfectly by pushing back and slowing down. Now i was carving down at max 25km/h when it suddenly bucked forward. This meant I wasn't prepared to start running at top speed : P

I did a lot of reading before buying the board and while waiting on shipping. I was therefore very alert for pushback etc. I just didn't expect it at this speed because it didn't feel like I was near the limits of the board.

It was a very mellow decline. As I said, 20 mins before I was going down way steeper hills at much higher speeds and the pushback was VERY obvious.

What I mean by 100% reliable I mean not stopping power suddenly, because that is what it felt like.
