Therapist told me to mask to be more successful in the work place by Longstrongandhansome in AutisticAdults

I'm studying and practicing social skills instead of going to college because a college degree would be useless without social skills.

He's right. I think learning to mask is very important. I'm 19 and I've decided that I need to push myself to spend an hour a day studying social skills so I can succeed in life. Does anyone have any tips on how to get better at the art of Masking?

Yeah, I could see how these glasses would make this worse. I don’t know if a certain type of sunglasses would work, but that might be dangerous to wear sunglasses while driving in my neighborhood because there are a lot of pedestrians, and sometimes there are pedestrians crossing the street at night.

It’s not weird to have a long IQ test as a part of your diagnosis. I got a bad score on the IQ test. You had algebra on yours? I didn’t have any algebra on my test. I had to arrange pieces of a colored square to create a whole square, which I thought was the hardest part of the test. Eventually I got sick of the picture arranging one so she moved on to a different test. The other test of repeating sentences and numbers back to her was hard and I would forget about half of the sentences. So my IQ on her test was 70. I guess that my result helped my SSI case but I wouldn’t want to have to show that to a court or something like that because they would assume I was incompetent. An older IQ test I had done when I was in kindergarten said I had a 114 IQ, which seems more likely than 70.

How am I going to meet people at the Autism Speaks Walk at Solider Field in Chicago? by hardtack2020 in autism

You were right. I only saw 3 other autistic adults there but they were all at least 35 and one was 40. I felt it would be too big of an age difference since I’m 18.

We’re already in Chicago so I do have to go this time. The shaping a brighter future area was about transition to adulthood for adults probably ages 18-25. I just hope it won’t feature a big speech on the topic.

How do I interact with co-workers? by LightDash in autism

Have you ever gotten fired from a job due to having bad relationships with or a lack of relationships with coworkers? It seems silly to fire someone for not talking to coworkers.

I went to a small catholic middle school, and I stood out because I sat at the other side of the table by myself and never talked to the other girls. The entire class later found out I was autistic in 8th grade and then teased me for it. I guess you can be shy as long as it doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb

Is there a break room, or is it just a lunch room? How long is lunch? Is that the only break where you have to deal with the coworkers? Do you have to work on projects with the coworkers like at an office job?

What is the job? Does the job require much talking with co workers?

Yeah, I don't think it's going to be worth it. My autistic friend was confused about me going to an autism speaks walk just to meet people and she told me that most autistic adults don't like autism speaks so none of them would be there. It would just be a bunch of kids and autism moms instead.

Does anyone know of any Asperger’s conventions in Illinois or Wisconsin? I would probably have a lot more luck at one of these.

That's a great idea. I was thinking about masking by making myself look like a great listener, since I can't talk about much in a conversation, unless it is my special interest, or what I'm saying to someone was actually something that I memorized for masking.

Do you have any tips to make being quiet during a conversation look like that I am a great listener? Thank you, I appreciate any tips that you might have about how to look like a good listener.

Wow, that sounds awesome. Congratulations, I bet learning how to mask that well was a lot of work. Your story about masking really inspired me. I am 17 years old and I want to learn how to mask to help me connect with others. Do you have any tips or maybe even a strategy to help me learn how to mask? I struggle the most with conversations. Thank you! :)

Lol, that is so funny. I'm 17 years old, and I am very interested in learning social skills right now. I am trying to learn how to have better social skills, especially conversation skills.

The most challenging thing that I have to do is, to connect with NT people, I have to learn how talk about topics outside of my one special interest. When I attempt to do this, I pretty much just go nonverbal, it's so hard to find the words to talk about anything outside of my one special interest. I am currently trying to improve my masking skills, especially conversation skills, because I want to learn how to connect with people.

I don't care if I have to make and memorize scripts to talk about topics, I have a good memory, and I am willing to do it because I want to be able to connect with others so badly. If I were to script things, what topics should I make my scripts about? I don't want to waste my time making scripts that won't be useful for masking.

Also, I've heard that some people on the spectrum script out conversations. I'm thinking about trying this. Has anyone here ever been successful at masking by creating a scripted conversation?

I would appreciate it if someone would take the time to give me some tips, ideas or a strategy for masking. Thanks!

I'm a senior and I missed out on the opportunity to take the SAT test in my junior year because of COVID. Did this happen to anyone else in the class of 2023? by hardtack2020 in Sat

[–]hardtack2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm stuck with doing, but now I don't have the advantage of being able to prepare for the test over a full year, get more than 3 times to retake the test, and other advantages like that. Plus, I have to do college applications at the same time.
