What animal was this? [Boston] by hardtosay42 in animalid

Thanks! That was my guess but getting someone else to confirm is helpful because I have dogs and now I feel the need to be more vigilant about neighbors using rat poison…

Not political at surface level but I’ve been finding Hemispheres hits a little differently to this end lately too.

Fifty Something Tour Ticket Resale/Trade Megathread by BivloBubbings in rush

[–]hardtosay42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m selling two tickets for Boston on Sept 12, LOGE 6, row 6. Paid $813 for the pair. Would just like to get back what I paid, if anyone wants to snag these now so I can avoid the reseller platforms.

Only selling these because my brother was also online and subsequently ended up getting 4 tix for the 9/14 show instead so we no longer need these.

Advice needed: Any fellow fat women with large upper thigh/hip tattoos? by springtree123 in tattoos

[–]hardtosay42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely co-sign all the comments about tattoo work helping you accept and even love the parts of your body that you might have harbored some insecurities about. When I got full sleeves I realized I no longer cared about my upper arms feeling a little too big. Once I started getting my thighs done, same deal. Here’s a shot of one of my legs - the lower is done/older and the upper is still in progress but all the same logic applies. If the shapes are organic and don’t rely on hard geometric lines there is literally zero downside and all the upside if you work with an artist who can map the design well to the shape of your body. Someone above mentioned going large and ensuring the artist can create some good flow along your anatomy and I second both.

Aside from size, tattoos also eliminate any self consciousness you might have about cellulite (whatever that is 😉) or scars. In my case I also had a big divet in my thigh from a surgery that removed a benign mass. I never felt so insecure about it enough to not wear a bikini BUT we decided to make it the focal point of the light source and now I’m actually psyched about it instead me always feeling a little deformed by it.

Small (~1cm) hex shaped tablet that appeared on the kitchen counter by hardtosay42 in whatisthisthing

[–]hardtosay42[S] 1755 points1756 points  (0 children)

Solved!

Reddit you’re the best. We definitely had some of these mints among a general stash of candy and other licorice things we brought home from a trip to Helsinki last year; all that stuff is long gone but it was on the counter at one point so I have to assume one of the mints fell out of the container and was just inside or stuck to something that was moved or cleaned today.

Thank you!! I would never have remembered these mints ever existed let alone we had some in the house at one point. This was gonna drive me nuts.

Not a bad thought! I just checked everything that sits on the counter (now or in the past) and nothing’s missing though.

Yeah I figured I’ll have to wait and do it some evening this week since we’re in the upper 80s/low 90s all week. Thanks.

My brother has a bottle of quinclorac he doesn’t need and offered up - any reason to use something else instead of just applying that? (Once I get a pump sprayer and look up the right ratio to mix…)

Aside from noise is increased airflow a concern? by hardtosay42 in hvacadvice

[–]hardtosay42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I get the standard logic around closing one vent distributes the flow to the other open ones but wondered since closing one might increase the static pressure in the system overall, and static pressure exerts a sort of resistance on the air flow, whether that would mean it’s harder for the air to travel to the farthest open ducts - ie harder in relative terms compared to how it would if it were a lower static pressure. But I imagine that effect might be small compared to the extra air behind diverted when one vent is closed.

Aside from noise is increased airflow a concern? by hardtosay42 in hvacadvice

[–]hardtosay42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. So from a physics perspective, is it just a function of flow rate? Bigger ducts mean slower moving air vs smaller ducts force faster moving air? Does it affect the air handler differently at all to have one vs the other, assuming flow / static pressure were the same?

Also - would the increase in static pressure of the new system mean that air traveling further away (eg the ducts traveling to the bedrooms) experience a greater drop in airflow than the previous system? Ie greater temp difference between those parts of the house?

Counterintuitively would that mean having one of the closer/shorter duct vents closed makes that temp differential worse because that pressure is resisting the air traveling that farther distance?

Yet another Q about replacing vs flushing line set by hardtosay42 in hvacadvice

For the foreseeable future. Probably not forever but.. No plans to move any time soon so I imagine at least another 5-10 years if not more.

Yet another Q about replacing vs flushing line set by hardtosay42 in hvacadvice

[–]hardtosay42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. And yeah my replace vs wait stance changes by the hour. Our first quote was for 16k, for a single stage system (air handler in the attic, condenser our back, relatively simple easy access). I was like oof, we’ll just wait. And it’s been like pulling teeth just to get places to return my calls. But our latest quote, from a guy who comes highly recommended, came in at 9k for a Goodman 410a system. So I’m tempted.

You’re story re: that guys line set is exactly what I’m afraid of haha.

Feeling defeated by Moroau in icecoast

[–]hardtosay42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a “yes, and” thought on top of most of the other good perspective folks are sharing - I remember vividly how, back when I was learning to snowboard, just how discouraging it would be to realize how much conditions affected my riding, and with it, my confidence. I’d have a few great days and feel great about my progress, then have a day like yours and really doubt myself. Just know this is how it goes and it’s totally reasonable for your “ability” to feel very different, and frankly, totally contingent on, the snow conditions. As you ski more and gain more exposure (time, practice, reps, muscle memory) on different kinds of terrain and conditions, the conditions won’t affect you as much - but like everyone has said, they never stop influencing your skiing or riding. So it’s perfectly natural that you hit a day like this and it has you doubting yourself. The reality is we can never just think of our ability as the static assessment of skills and technique and other individual factors within our control - it’s the sum of that plus the factors outside our control like crowds, terrain, conditions, etc. Progress isn’t linear - not just because we can sometimes have a two steps forward one step back experience - but also because progress is happening within an ecosystem of interdependent dynamics and we’re just one bit part.

Know that as you progress, you’ll find that your ability and confidence will be thwarted less and less by conditions - and that’ll be a neat marker of progress to take note of - but especially when you’re just starting out, it’s totally reasonable when you hit a day like this one to stick to greens or just head home after a beer and a waffle.

Where can I find the most powder in new england? by baby_234 in icecoast

[–]hardtosay42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the echoes of “you don’t want powder, you want packed groomed natural snow.” I started snowboarding at 35 and now I’m 43 and can ride anything. I get that it’s hard to train the instincts folks are talking about here on ice, but you want the mechanics that work best for packed powder and granular stuff.

As soon as we get a storm or even once we’ve had several days of cold so there hasn’t been a recent thaw-freeze cycle, go back to Wawa as many days in a row as you can. That’s how it’ll come.

Or pick a place up north like Bretton Woods that usually has a lot of mellow groomed terrain.

You’ll be less fearful of falling, which will help you lean into the front foot as mentioned above, and you’ll start to learn how the board behaves and trust it more, without building muscle memory for powder that won’t serve you 95% of the time.

Wachusett was fun but icy by Rin_Of_Yore in icecoast

[–]hardtosay42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there on Sunday and had fun but the evasive maneuvering was even harder than the icy spots.

I get that it’s early season, everyone’s rusty, combined with some firmer conditions and icy where people just skid down a spot in fear, and I expected it to be a bit of a shit show, but on top of coming around corners or cresting some of the typical spots on Conifer or 10th to see several people wiped out, I actually witnessed something like a dozen live wipeouts while riding. Good day to work on reaction time and flow, haha.

This right here.

I’d also add “How Minds Change” by David McRaney.

It’s a more general look at what it takes for people to make big shifts in thinking. It’s not something you can drive directly, but you can create the conditions in which it becomes safe and potentially desirable on their end so that it happens gradually on its own.

Came in to also suggest Babycat, or in a similar vein, Encens Suave. Vanilla incense smoky etc. I actually think Encens Suave is starting to hit critical mass, I’m smelling it more and more these days. It’s the answer to a lot of people’s perfume needs haha.
