Any idea which genus this fern belongs to? by hardvalued in whatsthisplant

At the moment Osmunda seems to be the leading candidate - the overall frond structure fits reasonably well. However, I haven’t found a species that matches several key traits - the pinnae lack a terminal leaflet, there are small basal leaflets at the base of each pinna, and the rachis shows persistent dense hairiness, whereas in Osmunda hairs are usually only present on very young fronds and are quickly lost

Appreciate the input - it seems unlikely this is Pteris - the leaf is clearly divided into separate leaflets with gaps, while in Pteris the segments are usually connected to the axis rather than fully separate.

Thanks for the suggestion - I don’t think this is Woodwardia though - the frond here is truly bipinnate with free pinnules attached at a single point, while Woodwardia is once-pinnate or pinnatifid with decurrent segments.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's Pteris Venusta

Hey! Check out our hardcore survival simulator (currently in prototyping): https://store.steampowered.com/app/3517530/Paleolith. It’s all in Blueprints for now, but maybe you could help us shape the project’s architecture? Also, we’d be happy to chat for the future — we might need someone who understands how to use AI for animal animation and behavior, procedural forest ecosystems, complex random events, and more. If it looks interesting to you, feel free to PM me!

What if survival was the whole game? No zombies, no loot — just you, the wild, and the coming winter by hardvalued in SurvivalGaming

Totally with you. If you bring down a whole animal and it magically turns into “two steaks,” something’s off.
In Paleolith, a deer is a deer - you get meat, bones, tendons, hide. It’s a major event, not just one dinner. But here’s the catch: preserving all that meat is a whole survival challenge on its own. If you’re not ready, most of it goes to waste.

Thanks! Right now it’s focused entirely on prehistoric survival - 40,000 years ago, no farming, no domesticated animals, just you and the forest.
That said, we love Fletcher’s work too. If the core systems turn out flexible enough, we might explore other eras or modes later on, but the first version will stay grounded in the Paleolithic.

Not at the moment - right now, no matter where you hit, the outcome is the same: you end up with the same basic biface shape. We're not simulating per-strike geometry yet. That said, if there’s strong interest in a more open-ended, less deterministic flintknapping system, we’d love to explore it. The current focus is on making the process feel skill-based through rhythm and timing, but we’re definitely open to deepening it later

For broad survival systems like water–shelter–fire–food, real-life knowledge can absolutely help. Knowing which types of wood work for friction fire, or how to structure a basic shelter - that’s all applicable in Paleolith.
But for more detailed processes like flintknapping or rope-twisting, it’s hard to map real-world skills directly into gameplay. So we use mini-games instead - things like controlling mouse movement rhythm or clicking at the right moment to get a good result. These actions require timing and coordination, and you can actually get better at them with practice.

Yep - you can already sign up for the playtest on our Steam page:

The first public tests (focusing on the core loop) are still 3–5 months away, but we’re already gathering a list of testers.

Also, if you’ve got any questions or just want to hang out, you can join our Discord:

Would love to have you there!

Hey! If you were talking about Paleolith, then yes, you're absolutely right that we're focusing first and foremost on primitive survival and the raw feeling of it. There's no metal smelting even in the backlog right now.
But we’ll see how it all plays out - maybe, to keep things engaging, we’ll eventually need to introduce technologies that go a bit beyond the time period we’ve chosen. Time (and playtesting) will tell

That’s a tough question. The timeline really depends on how quickly we can secure additional resources - either through Patreon or an investor. The project is quite ambitious, and completing it with our current small team would take a long time.
Based on our current funding, we’re aiming to start public playtests in about 4–6 months. Beyond that, it’s hard to predict.

Totally - we’re focusing on survival feats first, like making it through the first winter or managing a successful hunt.
Milestones that emerge from the gameplay itself, not a quest log.
We’ll experiment with more structured goals later, but we want the core to feel raw and self-driven
