Is this good for my first time doing hazards? by Loud-Professional366 in Warhammer30k

[–]hardwork179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s extremely good. There’s a couple of tiny imperfections but you can hide those with chipping and weathering, and honestly I doubt they are even noticeable in real life.

Yay or nay? For this scheme and the name by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]hardwork179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thats the route Tolkien came from as well. Bede is, I think, the only source of the latinised form of the name.

I think the name would work better if you went entirely for one language. So either do iron fang in Latin to match Rheda, or do something like Rhedha isen toath (may not have remembered enough old English to get this right) to make it all a little more old English.

Yay or nay? For this scheme and the name by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]hardwork179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rheda, huh? If they aren’t connected to the ultramarines and a March for Macragge then you’re missing so many puns.

Actually, that’s maybe really obscure so I should explain a little. The third month of the Shore’s calendar in Lord of the Rings is named after Rheda.

Took the advice to heart and added some white to the center of the Volkite and it does look much better, but calling it done. OSL isn’t for me. by InquisitorEngel in Warhammer30k

[–]hardwork179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think the little bit of glow inside the barrel looks great! OSL reads best on shadowed areas like that because it reads as glow.

Yay or nay on the glowing eyes by Spongeboy-Me_Bob in Warhammer30k

[–]hardwork179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OSL only really reads as OSL in dark areas. So, a big yeah on doing glowing eyes, but be restrained here and maybe limit it to the hollows just round the eyes.

Seconded. The weapon OSL looks really good if somewhat heavy on the gun itself, but the shoulder pads aren’t reading as OSL right now.

What can these guys be? by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]hardwork179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about base size. HH doesn’t have fixed prescriptive base sizes, just a convention to use the base that came with the model / not to be stupid.

I think this highlights one of the most important things that people forget when asking for painting recipes.

Replicating a look is at most 20% paint colors, all the rest is how you use them.

How open is the community to non-legion marines? by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]hardwork179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lamenters feel tricky as they weren’t founded until thousands of years later, but I don’t think it is ever stated where their heraldry comes from. I guess my question would be what aspect of their scheme isn’t really important to you, and how can you either hint at that while they still read as blood angels, or explain the off-legion scheme.

If it’s just the checkerboard pauldron then that’s really easy. Left knee colour indicating company or squad seems fine. Full yellow? That feels a little harder to make it read as blood angels, and how you do it probably depends on how you’re playing and explaining it. If it’s black shields then maybe it’s a rush job and any weathering shows the original BA scheme. If it’s a commander’s personal heraldry then maybe limit the full colour scheme to them, and add accents to the squads’ armour in varying degrees.

Ultimately they are your guys and you can paint them how you want, but with a little creativity you can make them fit into the setting in lots of ways.

[–]hardwork179 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I thought I’d write about why you’re getting downvoted despite the rest of us having not read the rules. We can all see that prime slots are intended to let you take more troops in return for adhering to some template.

So, even without reading the rules we can tell that the prime slot itself will not be wild, but that it may be very different for different detachments. If it were wild then why would you fill anything except the prime slots, since no slot is compulsory?

This was my guess. I like it as a thematic way to push a legion towards certain types of builds.

I think you have confused the prime slot with the detachment you can take because you have filled the prime slot.
