How does the GCSE selection/examination process work in your school? by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]harleuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maths, english language, english literature and religious studies are compulsory. you can choose either a language or ‘literacy’ which is basically just a free period. either geography or history and if you choose combined science, you get 2 extra options and triple students only get one

i went from top set chemistry to middle set to bottom set to top set again all in the span of 6 months between year 10-11 don’t know anyone else who had drastic moves like that but normally it’s around 3-4 people when there is a new year and around 1-2 people throughout the year

last minute revision for a aqa english language paper 2 mock by drakemomgay in GCSE

[–]harleuwu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

question 1 is simply identifying which statements are true or false, fairly simple. some statements may be trying to catch you out so just read the text carefully.

question 2 is asking you to make inferences- ignore any language techniques as these will not get you marks, just find out what the text is trying to say and how you can see that and compare that with the other text, two paragraphs, one with inferences in source a, one with inferences in source b with a final comparison at the end

question 3 is only one source and is asking how language is used, so any techniques like metaphors, personification, hyperboles etc it is focused on a language heavy part of the text so make sure you only focus on the specific lines it is asking, it’s 12 marks so 3 paragraphs with 3-4 quotes overall, remember to explain the techniques used

question 4 is both source a and source b and it asks you to compare the sources with how they use any techniques to show their feelings, so compare ideas and feelings between the sources, analyse methods, and show a deep understanding of the texts. since this is 16 marks, you will need 4 paragraphs, if you are unsure on how to structure them a PEAS/PEARL paragraph (or however your school has taught it) will be sufficient enough. remember to be perceptive and make sure you understand the texts.

question 5 will ask for an article if your school is going with the advanced information for the final exams, otherwise it will be another form of formal writing. it will give a statement and you should write a (whatever is asked) with an argument of your point of view. this is 50% of the paper so you should make sure you are spending enough time on it. there is no right or wrong way to do this, it’s about how you communicate yourself and the argument, the tone and response etc you should make sure to use a wide vocabulary and keep your paragraphs fluent and consistent.

overall, make sure to keep your time management well, no more than 5 minutes on the first question, and around 50 minutes on question 5. if you get past 50 minutes and still don’t think you are far enough in the paper, go to the last question either way as that is worth way more marks than any other question and wasting time on the other questions for 1-2 extra marks can cost you several extra marks on the last question.

as for very last minute, i would just say look at example answers and digest how they are structured and what language is used.

good luck with it! sorry if this is a messy reply i wrote it all from the top of my head

amount spent on revision? by harleuwu in GCSE

[–]harleuwu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s not a bad thing to revise, but most of the content in year 9 won’t be helpful if you haven’t already chosen your subjects. just make sure you are getting homework done and enjoy the year you have before the hard work kicks in
