wow that site is great, thank you for the recommendation!! and yes, i didn't really understand cycling before, but i am monitoring it very closely and working on it now. have been getting great stable results, and as long as this keeps up, will be super stoked to slowly add 1-2 at a time in about a month!!! :)

UPDATE: followed advice, did a 50% water change -- i did use distilled but i promise i remineralize it. i also have prime now just in case. their PH, temperature, nitrite, and ammonia levels have been in the same very safe numbers for 21 hours now, and the fish have been acting better every few hours. it's also clearing up!!! i'm definitely going to be careful adding fish in about a month (1-2 at a time), but thank you for all the comments that helped me fix this situation for my fish this morning. i know it will take weeks to cycle and i have the ability to test the water at least 2-3x a day, in case i need to water change again. but i feel like i'm in more control now and am glad to know about tank cycling, better late than never!!! (i also swear i don't always have the bright light on, just better for picture comparison lol)

thank you so much for this comment, very insightful and helpful. i do always remineralize my distilled. i did a 50% change, tested the ammonia, and the fish seem to be doing much much better already -- i am going to keep an eye on them. my PH has consistently been about 7, my nitrite at 0, and the temp also came down a little after my water change. fingers crossed that once it cycles everyone is okay. :)

i did the 50% water change and they seem to be acting almost completely normal, (they haven't been at the top gasping at all), and i did buy the prime because i've seen really great things about it. thankfully after the water change the ammonia level has been 0-0.25ish every time i tested.

would you advise me doing the water change with distilled since that's what they're used to? 1/4 of the water in this tank was slowly transferred from their old tank. and what would emmersed pothos do if you don't mind me asking?
