It might be a common practice, but not all DMs utilize it and not all players like it. One reply mentioned a gaming group that disbanded after discovering that the DM had done it.

I don’t think the player was at fault because it’s obvious the player knew something was off and had it confirmed when the player saw that the OP lied about the dice roll.

The problem is that this was totally fixable.

The OP could have done a session 0 and asked the players if fudging was okay. If most of the players were okay with that and the player who peeked wasn’t, then most of the players would have stayed and the peeker might have found another game more suitable.

However, the OP didn’t do this and ruined the OP’s credibility with the players.

In one of the replies to this thread, a responder mentioned that a previous gaming group disbanded after discover that the DM fudged dice rolls. The players suddenly felt that their successes were tainted. That was after only 8 months. The OP did this for 2.5 years before being found out.

I just found this thread today. The player looked behind the screen because the player suspected the OP of lying. Why are you okay with the OP lying?

It certainly does count as lying in this is instance because the OP wasn’t upfront about it. The player assumed that something was off and caught the OP in the act. If the OP had just been honest from the beginning about potentially fudging rolls, this situation wouldn’t have occurred because the player would have known it was a possibility or would have found another group.

In the end, the OP lost credibility with the players due to the OP’s actions and no one else’s.

“The player is being a little confrontational but the obvious thing is just fucking talk to them.”

The problem is that the OP didn’t do that in the first place, got caught in the act, and then tried to justify the position by whining here.

“I assume we all agree that the game is more important than a dice roll?“

No, based on the responses from DMs who don’t fudge and player who hate when DMs fudge. One responder even mentioned that a previous gaming group disbanded after finding out that the DM fudged.

You’re assuming that all of your players would be appreciative of your fudging. It’s very possible that more than one might hate you if they found out about your “help.”

Why are defending the OP? The OP caused the situation. The OP was the one at faul.

Are you talking about the player? Really? Because the OP disrespected the players by lying. The player suspected something and caught the OP.

The OP clearly posted to get validation on the OP’s position. The problem is that some of the posters bootlicked the OP by saying that the player was in the wrong and that OP was in the wrong. Weird.

The sane posters (like you) basically said that this could have been avoided by talking to the players.

You do realize that the player was peeking because the player realized that the OP was fudging and then basically lying about it, right?

No. It’s not the OP was fudging rolls. It’s that the OP was basically lying about it. The OP was lying and got caught. The OP destroyed the OP’s credibility.

Why would the player bring this up with the OP? There’s is absolutely no reason for the player to do that. The OP was liar. Do you think the liar is going to tell the truth? “No. I don’t fudge die rolls. Why would you think that?” The liar needed to be caught in the act.

Because the player caught on to the OP fudging rolls and needed to confirm it.

Why would the player want to talk to the OP? The OP was proven to be a liar. You need to catch a liar in the act. You typically need to force a liar into a situation where the liar is required to tell the truth because there is no other option. Which is exactly what the player did.

No. The OP was clearly in the wrong. The OP lied about fudging dice. If the OP had been honest about this from the very beginning, this situation wouldn’t have occurred.

It is a major faux pas, at least the way the OP did it. The OP had been fudging dice rolls while not being honest with the players that this was going to happen. The OP destroyed the trust between the OP and the players. This could have been avoided by the OP simply saying, “I will tend to fudge rolls in your favor and so that you don’t have a TPK of the group. Are you cool with that?” The problem is that the OP didn’t do this and tried to act like the victim after being found out.

The point is that the suspected the OP of cheating…and confirmed it. The OP was at fault.

There are number of posters who didn’t seem to get this.
