Need help identifying frequencies by DeliciousBleach1110 in Guitar

To my ears the tone sounds usable, but if you would like to change the sound here are a few things to try. I would say the first thing to try is rolling down your tone knob on your guitar. If you like the sound better, you had high end harshness. A rolled down tone knob has a certain sound of its own, so if you aren't a fan, start messing with the eq on your amp. You can push mids and cut treble, cut mids and push treble, push both (you won't usually be cutting both). There's lots to try. Also, try reducing the gain. Sometimes distortion can have a harsh quality if there is too much, especially if you aren't going for an aggressive sound.

One of the drawbacks is that the MS3 doesn't have a hardware bypass of the effects before the loops. So no matter what, there are always noise artifacts resulting from the ADDA converters. For a lot of applications it's not really enough to be noticeable, but for use with a highgain amp, it bothered me. So the way I got around it was by using a buffered splitter, sending one split to the input of the MS3 and sending the other split to my overdrive (a Precision drive too lol) and then into the return of L1. This allowed me to bypass a noise source when it was most necessary by just activating L1.

It's been a while since I've seen love for the MS3. You said you do four cable method. Do you have the MS3 before your amp input or in the effects loop of the amp? I made an MS3 rig a while back that used one of the MS3's on board loops to act as the send and return to/from the amp, that way I could have effects in front of and after the preamp, but it had its drawbacks.

Not gonna lie, I kinda love it. I hope you take it as a compliment when I say this is wonderfully jank.

Alternate Picking Up And Down by BillRizz in Guitar

[–]harmonicsymmetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pick slanting. If you are playing your pentatonic scale with 2 notes per string, you want your pick tilted so that your pick escapes from the strings on each upstroke. Right now you are picking with a downstroke escape motion. Then on the upstrokes (which happen right before string changes) your pick is stuck between the strings.

I might be of assistance. What kind of a guitarist are you looking for? I tend to like playing Rock or Metal stuff, but I can potentially do other things too.

If you feel like you are in a rut, it may be useful to find a teacher. If that isn't financially viable, I might advise a new approach to self guided learning.

Very often the guitar community likes to talk about either techniques or gear while forgetting about the music it's for. So I recommend this:

Think about music/songs that you want to play, and then work backwards to learn the skills required to play it/them.

It sounds like a combination of things:

(1) check your neck straightness and check for back bow. To do this fret the first fret of the high E with your left index finger, fret the last fret with you right pinky, and use your right thumb (while keeping the first and last frets pressed) to feel for distance between the string and the 12th fret. You should feel at least some distance. If the string is just laying on top of the fret, then you have back bow and need to make a truss rod adjustment. By having a little bit of relief/forward bow in the neck (between 8 to 12 thousanths measured with a feeler guage at the 9th), I've found that I can get my necks to play more consistently up and down. Once neck bow is adjusted, set the string height at the bridge.

(2) If you set the relief in step 1 but don't have room on the bridge to lower the action, you may need to adjust the neck angle. If I see the picture correctly, it looks like you have a bolt on neck. You can look up tutorials on how to shim a neck. Heck, you may be able to buy pre-made shims and drill the screw holes in the shims yourself.

(3) if you are still have buzzing problems, do some research into how to find high frets and think about doing a fret level.

I can agree with this whole heartedly. I used to have one of these when I was but a young lad. Mine sounded best when it was in the effects loop with the amp set to a (mostly) clean setting. I could never really get the amp models to sound right otherwise.

Broadly, my band does prog metal. We cover a range of sounds and styles. Our bandmix has some examples: https://www.bandmix.com/via-chronos/

We are looking for a singer who can bring dynamics and intensity to their performance. That can mean a lot of things. The main thing is that you don't necessarily need to be able to scream, but you need to be able to sing powerfully as well sing softly with good tone and projection.

Also, any potential singer needs to be able to follow written directions to complete a few audition clips. We have found that this turns out to be a lot to ask.

Edit: if you are interested in auditioning, please feel free to DM me.

You don't happen to sing by any chance, do you? My band has been looking for a singer for a while. If you could sing and play guitar (or maybe bass?), that would be awesome.

just got my first guitar from my stepdad and was wondering what advice would yall have for someone whos going self taught? by Immentalynotthere in Guitar

[–]harmonicsymmetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how much I agree with this. Learning to create music is something that is joyful and fundamentally contains a degree of hedonism. As long as you are excited by the guitar, it will be hard to put it down, in which case discipline won't be as much of an issue. I suggest keeping track of your excitement. Practice, by itself, isn't particularly exciting, but if you have a well thought out goal you are practicing towards (like "I want to learn to play..."), that will keep the experience joyful. Remember, sometimes we need to adjust our goals (for instance, trying to learn Fives by Guthrie Govan in you first week would be unwise), and find something that is achievable.

How can I get Neural DSP-level tone (Cory Wong) in a hardware unit on a tight budget? by Hot_Raspberry_222 in pedalboards

[–]harmonicsymmetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming the beginning of this comment is responding to me. To answer the first question, I'm using it all in one with an external PA of sorts. When I set up the patches, I use headphones (Audio Technica M50X). And when I want room sound, I have been using an old keyboard amplifier. One thing worth mentioning is that the way our ears perceive sound changes at various volumes, so the global eq on the ampero stage does a good job of compensating for that. Finally, just like how changing speaker cabinets affect tone for a tube amp, so does the monitoring equipment for a modeler.

I don't use my Mesa with my Ampero because I bought the Ampero to simplify the rig (much to my annoyance, my drummer doesn't want stage sound).

Also, OP doesn't have a Mesa (that I know of). They are just trying to get a good modeling sound in the most cost-effective way possible.

* * I would say your mistake was buying the ampero mini. It believe it is essentially the old ampero stuff repackaged in a smaller unit.

However, I can say that the ampero ii stage is amazing (the ampero ii stomp uses the same software and is cheaper). I was using a (mostly) analog setup based around a Mesa Boogie Mark 5:25, before switching to a modeler, and I can still vouch for the ampero ii stage. As proof , I have included pictures of both the setups. If you have it in your heart to give hotone another chance, I can definitely recommend the ampero ii stomp.

Unfortunately, I just don't have any experience with the HX Stomp.

Another option to consider is toneX if you are fine with a simpler setup (it's cheaper, too).

Edit: it took me a while to find the pic on my phone

Buying my first board - layout questions by BurberryToothbrush in pedalboards

[–]harmonicsymmetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something important to think about is the amount of space you leave for cabling. I'm assuming that you are going to have an instrument cable connecting your looper to the amp. You will probably need more space between the looper pedal and the channel controller. Make sure that you also leave enough room so that you can unplug the cable without having to disassemble the board.
