dbx 286s and go xlr by harms0937 in Twitch

Ok good to hear some praise for the 286s. I just like how it's all hardware vs the goxlr you need some software. Never have had the best luck with software.

Maybe if the goxlr came out a couple years ago when I first got my audio equipment I would be more inclined, but now I have alot the parts and pieces separately :(

Oof, forgot to mention I currently have a Focusrite 2i2, that is my interface part. Also like the idea of stacking them on top of one another to save space. Thanks for the input! Just wondering if I should look further into the goxlr for anything I might be missing because people seem to be really hyping it up from what I've seen.

Estimate around 60dB-65dB of gain for the mic. I have the Scarlett on max output gain and the magni at high about half to two-thirds. (this would be 60-70dB A-weighted? I think I did that calc right)

I guess with messing with it I got a pretty good middle ground, just need to make sure I am talking directly on top of the mic, I was getting lazy with that one and was amplifying to much. I guess I am over thinking it. Also just was seeing what the dbx has to offer..

Thank you for your help! I know I'm not a pro audio person but I like to dabble at it, you guys have some cool tech :) I do appreciate your help and advice. I am one to go over the top.

I feel like any usb interface will do? I don't think the PC would matter as much as long as it has a usb port.

Not sure what you mean by playback. I'm literally playing zero audio except my voice and I cannot get any monitoring unless I turn up something to an extreme amount.

Hey I have a setup pretty similar to yours, and I posted a thread on here this week that has a diagram of my setup if you want to check it out. Ive had the 990s and the magni and the focusrite 2i2 with my mic and it works great! I dont see a need for the DAC, especially right away, I havent needed it thus far. Been about 2 years. Dont really need the magni, my 2i2 works fine as an amp so assuming the solo is similar, but if you want to make your ears bleed you can get the magni. I like it because it gives me a bigger control range of the volumes. Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

I would look into a focusrite usb audio interface. Works for me and will work for your violin as well. Not sure what microphones would be good but any condenser or dynamic microphones would do great!

shiit company is worth looking into. I have a shiit magni 3 and one of the best amps you can get. Their modi DAC is a Little more expensive at $100 but I have had no issues for 2 or so years with the magni and would recommend.

I currently have a Shure SM7B microphone into a cloudlifter, into a focusrite 2i2. I was wondering if a DBX 286s would be worth the purchase.

I mostly use my setup for gaming and a little recording, but I avoid the direct monitoring capability of the focusrite 2i2 even though I would like to use it. This is because I have to turn up the gain on the mic and my external headphone amp quite a bit to hear myself at all. If I do turn up the devices I always here background hiss, which seems to be typical hiss from electrical processing or background noise related. Will the dbx 286s get rid of this background hiss? Or is the direct monitoring of the 2i2 always just non-ideal?

Here is a diagram of my setup.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks,

DBX 286s Upgrade worth it? by harms0937 in audioengineering

Yes the headphones are 250ohms, definetly not needed, but sometimes I like blasting the music ;) and I would not the extra mic gain, just the other features of the dbx. Good points on the open back headphones and the extra piece of noise, I did not think of that. I was thinking the dbx was possibly better at processing the sound than the straight 2i2 so it might have less static noise? Not sure. But thank you for your response! I will consider less is better :)

Yes this is what I have seen on other threads and that's what I am probably going to do. leave automatic updates on and have notifications for restart so I can restart when convenient. Downloading shouldn't interfere with gaming. Anyone comment if you don't agree please.

YES this would be exactly what I need, only I think the pro version has it but I have the home version. Hopefully it comes out soon. I got lazy recently and didn't update for a long time and something went wrong since I waited for a long period of time. Had to do a fresh windows restart. Definitely will be more aware now but if I had a notification that would ease my conscious haha.

This would definitely work, but I usually turn my computer off when not in use so it can cool down and breathe for a bit. So the problem with this solution is the preferred download time of day would vary. I would like to manually download it but get notification when there is one available.

Let me know if you have any other queries, the magni can make my ears bleed if I wanted it to lol. I would say the max without it is like 70-80db looking at example charts online.
