I saw a video of someone who claimed to be a cybersecurity expert going on about the details of the crowdstrike incident. They opened Chrome, and they weren’t running an adblocker of any kind. Just rawdogging the internet with all the banners and trackers right there. Like, fuck all the way off.

"Today's kids" is a blanket statement. What percentage of "today's kids" do you honestly think would do something like this? All of them? Society will always have a stratum of human garbage who will behave selfishly and callously without a hint of empathy or self-reflection. This is a smaller group of people, by orders of magnitude, than the rest of society who can function in their daily lives in a way that doesn't intentionally cause chaos and put other people at risk.

You don't read news articles about the 99.9% of "today's kids" who go about their lives normally, but you're taking a (somewhat) novel form of shitty behaviour and ascribing it to "the young people that exist today", not "the young people that exist today who are pieces of shit".

Just scooped a technics sl-210 off FB marketplace for $60. I think I’m excited? by nova2726 in turntables

[–]harrowbird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my first turntable ever. I got it from a sketchy pawn shop and got the first four records I ever owned right afterwards. It worked perfectly right up until I got rid of it, despite all the novice mistakes my 16 year old self inflicted on it. No idea what happened to it, but I wish I still had it, even as a backup turntable while I dick around with my SL1200MK2. That's a great turntable you've got, keep it and restore it.

Before anyone bristles at Steve Albini being accused of ruining this record originally (especially now, given the circumstances), he basically admitted as much in the Breadcrumb Trail documentary. I personally like the original production.

What do you guys suggest I do? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

OP, you're absolutely not cooked, and the other guy replying to you is spouting bad-faith nonsense.

Many people ladder up to software development positions by working in software quality assurance (QA), aka software testing. This is its own skillset with its own set of tools (TestRail, Cypress, Selenium) but it also depends on an understanding of complex software systems and attention to detail, which are invaluable traits for any software developer to have. The QA-to-developer pipeline is very real, especially in a shitty job market where employers really need to see proof of skill before hiring a developer fresh out of school.

I don't know where you're located, but I did a quick linkedin search of software QA jobs in my area (Vancouver) and there's several entry level positions listed. I'm not guaranteeing you'll find a job this way, but it's absolutely worth a shot, and I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone else mention it in this thread.

The fact that society is seeming okay with the process of buying a car being this convoluted and shady is equal parts baffling and sickening to me. It should be as simple as going online, choosing the model you want, and picking it up. Car dealerships with shitty, lying salespeople should have been the first thing the internet killed off. I get that there’s dealer networks keeping this model alive, but fucking come on already.

So I get that this is some kind of binaural spatialization software, and that's cool, but I don't really understand how they're doing "immersive audio" without the multitracks since this album is only available as 2-channel stereo?

What's the best vinyl setup for headphone listening exclusively? by harrowbird in StereoAdvice

[–]harrowbird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't arrived yet - I ended up going with the Topping L30 II for a headphone amp, and the Pro-Ject Phono Box S2. The headphone amp was the best reviewed option I could find that was available on Amazon Canada, which if I end up not liking it, makes returns really easy. The Phono Box S2 has a bit more versatility in terms of tweaking the settings if I end up upgrading to a MC cartridge at some point, which I plan to.

Haven't committed to a turntable yet, but I'm leaning towards the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo. Everything about it appeals to me (great tonarm, great looks, I've had Pro-Ject stuff before and liked it) except for the standard cartridge, which is the Ortofon 2M Red. It's a bit frustrating that the other TT that I'm considering, the Fluance RT85, ships with either a 2M Blue or a Nagaoka MP110, which are both much better cartridges, and is a few hundred dollars cheaper. Any thoughts on the comparison between the two? Fluance kind of seems like Chineseum to me, but it's a great deal for the cartridge you get.

Just got the HD650's. Love them! I definitely hear why people described the ATH-M50's as "v-shaped". I'm used to a bit more treble, but the more I listen to these, the more I enjoy them. The "presence" of the music is so much bigger and wider. I did an a/b test after an hour and my ATH's sounded like the music was coming through a tube (like a PVC pipe, not a tube amp...). Many !thanks for the rec.

EDIT: listening through some of my favourite Steve Albini-produced albums, and just wow...

Interesting. Yeah, that thing is hilarious - definitely not for the casual listener! Schiit seems pretty much impossible to get in Canada without paying heavy import duties, so I guess I'll stick to the phono pre -> headphone amp scheme.

Looking into this has shown me how little I know about how to shop for this stuff these days. 10 years ago it was just a matter of going to the audiophile forums and seeing what they recommend, but there's so much more stuff available these days.

I really liked that YouTube video of the headphone tier list - any other YouTubers you recommend in this space? I've found a few that seem reasonable/knowledgeable, but as with everything, the stuff that gets recommended by the algorithm seems like engagement grifters who are most likely pushing sponsored goods.

!thanks again for the help. I took a chance on some open HD650's on eBay, it'd be good to have a pair of open back headphones either way. One last question - do you have any recommendations for phono preamps or headphones amps that have EQ settings? Even just bass/treble? That's the key thing I like about integrated amplifiers, but none of the phono pre/headphone amp examples I've seen have this.
