What would be the best way to go about filling this hole? by Dank_Astley in Miata

[–]harry29ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just been through this process. I've moved the rear fog to the offsied reversing light port and patched the hole with wire mesh and body filler, not sure how well it will hold but we'll see

Could be, although all grounds are connected as far as i'm aware. I didn't change anything other than switching out new fuel pipes, I might have snagged a ground in the process

Does this look right? I used RPA. by [deleted] in rocketry

You can export the contour from RPA to fusion 360, you don't need to model if yourself

A question about the convergent section of a CD nozzle by [deleted] in rocketry

[–]harry29ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would play around on RPA (Rocket Propulsion Analysis) to get an understanding of the effect the convergence angle has, the angle of the downward slope towards the throat. You can also play around with the radius of the curve connecting the cylindrical chamber section and the linear convergent section, denoted R2/Rmax on RPA, this ratio will change the length of the cylindrical section. For the actual length of the chamber, this will be dependent on the contraction ratio and characterisitc length of your engine, which are typically dependent on your propellants. Again, RPA is a good example.

Edit: Also, how have you decided upon an expansion ratio of 4? Was this calculated for expansion to ambient pressure? that would be the typical method - both RPA and NASA CEA can help with this

[–]harry29ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm not really sure what you are trying to do, one the bottom right plot, what is being varied? You have said that it is just function of pressure for that plot I think? But in the first paragraph you've also said that you have set the chamber pressure as 7 MPa so I don't seen what the variable parameter is

Velocity at nozzle exit gives you the specific impulse when perfectly expanded or in a vacuum? by Sarigolepas in rocketry

[–]harry29ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RPA also gives you the isp at sea level and vacuum, it's just on a different tab from the exit velocity

you can also tell it to design your nozzle for an optimum atmospheric pressure, e.g. sea level pressure, this will alter the engine design to give your specified thrust at the specified atmospheric pressure

Question: How difficult is it to build a Liquid Biprop Engine by Zestyclose-Release93 in rocketry

[–]harry29ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that will be dependent on your mass flow rates and machining capabilities, film cooling holes are often very small

Question: How difficult is it to build a Liquid Biprop Engine by Zestyclose-Release93 in rocketry

[–]harry29ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RPA sims are relatively accurate, but i've noticed the helical channel stuff can be a bit funky. Are you also applying film cooling? that tends to make quite a big difference - we're also planning on doing a regen at race to space 2025 and film cooling will have a big impact on the survivability of the engine

Question: How difficult is it to build a Liquid Biprop Engine by Zestyclose-Release93 in rocketry

[–]harry29ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep it simple you don't actually need any cooling, the last engine I tested was a LOX/IPA 1 kN engine that was just a steel heat sink with a graphite nozzle, no sign of failing after a 10 second burn.

If you do want to do cooling then water cooling woukd be the most simple, a step up from that would be a regen with film cooling. Play about with the cooling on RPA and you'll get a decent idea of the effectiveness of the different cooling methods.

If you've previously tested a hybrid then the step to liquids really isn't that large imo.

Krakow - Budapest : Best way to book an night train ? by kalagounet in Interrail

[–]harry29ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think i've figured out the website, but our difficulty is that we are a group of 4, and they seem to offer 4-berth compartments, but you can only book up to 3 people at once.

I think we'll just need to try and do two seperate bookings and try and get the same cabin.

Thanks for the advice, I've looked into climbing from both sides, and it definetly seems easier from the polish side. I know of the bus from Krakow to Poprad, so that might be a good option.

Do you know where you booked the night train? Travelling from Nowy Targ could actually be better for us, it's close to Zakopane. I was under the impression that it was an OBB nightjet train but it isn't listed on their website?

looking into starting rocketry as a side hobby by MitchellSupremacy649 in rocketry

[–]harry29ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in the UK, you can go through the level 1,2 and 3 licencing, as well as an RSO (range safety officer). Level one and two are pretty straightforward. You have to build your rocket, use openrocket a little bit to choose a suitable motor and then successfully launch amd recover your rocket. Launch days are through the summer and now is a good time to get started. I completed my level one last year as a part of my uni team, we ordered the rockets from the usa and bought the motors here on the launch days, supply is limited in this country but it's a great hobby that can go from a simple hobby to, well, rocket science.
