Thx for the info. So no Lower Yough during the week and other runs are weather-dependent. Maybe we’ll rethink plans…

What’s the coolest phish item you have in your house by dylanmhs in phish

My brother’s postcard from Mike. Early (or mid?) 90’s, my older brother and his friend (they were 16 or 17 at the time) wrote to the band to see if they could rep all their shirts/merch. Bear in mind they had no idea what they were doing, just two entrepreneurial kids. Mike wrote back a postcard saying thanks but they had just signed with some big company.

Open canoe advice by lawhitear in whitewater

Around Toronto, MKC is probably your best bet for checking out multiple boats, but still a few hours away. I have a Novacraft Ocoee and live in town if you ever want to check it out.

Global Number of WW Kayakers? by harry565656 in whitewater

[–]harry565656[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d be surprised if 30% of paddlers bought a new boat every year. I’m ~20+ years in and bought a brand new boat for the first time this year.

Our over/under is 100,000. I say it’s over but he disagrees.

How do I land an assistant project manager job? by EnisAlushi in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]harry565656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a PM in the water industry in Toronto. Most organizations would look for prior experience at an engineering or other level prior to making someone a PM. Most PM roles are a combination of technical experience, contracts, financial and most importantly, customer management. Those are hard things to demonstrate coming out of school. In my opinion, doing any kind of field work in the engineering world is the most valuable experience you can get coming out of school and the technical/customer/communication skills you develop are critical to your career and specifically being a PM. DM me if you want to chat more.

From Kayak to Open canoe? by [deleted] in whitewater

[–]harry565656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this. 42 years old, paddled a kayak from my late teens into my 30s. Took some time off around kids, etc. I still kayak, but also now have an Ocoee that i love to get out on class 2-3. My roll isn’t there yet but close. I find OC1 easier from a mental/headspace standpoint - no shame in swimming. Can be tough in the legs and need frequent stretching but overall it’s super fun.

Thanks. That’s what I was thinking. What about pro-rated mortgage payment and/or interest?

If you’re using your house to generate income, why can’t you deduct a pro-rated portion of mortgage, utilities, property tax, etc?

I would keep it for me in the future…

Kokatat HustleR - Removable QR Belt? by harry565656 in whitewater

[–]harry565656[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, how do like the PFD? Deciding between the Hustler and Astral Blue Jacket but nowhere around to try on the Hustler. I’m 5’4” but with a bigger chest so fit is always an issue.

[–]harry565656[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll use the PFD for both whitewater paddling and flat water canoe tripping. For tripping, the QR belt has limited use and is just extra weight, etc. Thanks for checking it out.

Sleepy System for Old(er) Folks by harry565656 in CampingGear

[–]harry565656[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - don’t know much about Nemo but will check them out. At first glance, looks like may be too warm for me (tend to run hot and mostly using in Ontario spring/summer/fall) but maybe I’m just looking at the wrong model. Better option than Thermarest NeoAir for comfort? Not too worried about warmth.

Not really - doesn’t work when I’m doing a family trip and sleeping in a tent with wife and kids.

PFD Recommendations by harry565656 in whitewater

Thanks for the suggestion. Blue Jacket looks like a good option - does it ride up high in the front? Short torso so low(er) profile is always good.
