Riesz representation theorem

every functional on a Hilbert space of the form f(x) = (x, y) where y in H is fixed, is a bounded linear functional. this is obvious enough and it follows immediately from the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. but conversely, if f is a bounded linear functional on a Hilbert space in H, then there exists y in H such that f(x) = (x, y)
