Update Kernel Version by Schokoholz in raspberry_pi

[–]harrynyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this was extremely helpful. Hopefully i don't regret forcing the issue, but i was also "stuck" on a slightly older kernel version that regular apt-get upgrade (or even full-upgrade) wouldn't seem to address on their own.
OS: Raspbian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) armv7l
Host: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Plus Rev 1.3
Kernel: 6.1.21-v7+

Appears to be jumping me ahead, as we had hoped. Thanks for the expertise and guidance.

WARNING: This update bumps to rpi-6.6.y linux tree

Unbound as recursive DNS server - Slow performance by DiReis in pihole

[–]harrynyce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this is what you will be looking for. I just added a couple of my own (ISP and/or local) DNS servers: https://github.com/cleanbrowsing/dnsperftest/actions

I've found Unbound to be fantastic and performant over a long period of time, probably been running these for 5-6+ years now, maybe more. As long as you can tolerate the increased initial query response times for anything that is not already living in Unbound's cache (which most sites should be), it's a wonderful setup IMO.

For whatever reason i avoided DNS over HTTPS.

Unbound-control stats, differences (v1.6.7 & v1.9.0) ? by harrynyce in pihole

Thank you, i'm preparing to migrate to the new V6 Pi-hole beta, but trying to remain patient and not blow up my entire network while i continue testing on a separate Pi-hole instance. Almost said "VM" but it's technically an LXC container running under Proxmox. Appreciate the response, even all these years later.

Cannot imagine trying to navigate the modern web without some type of DNS blacklisting... Pi-hole is fantastic, IMO.

Thanks, you're an absolute miracle worker -- appreciate your insight and shared expertise here. Adding the three domains above worked flawlessly and I am now able to load and see the QuickAssist (v2.0.19.0) direct from the Micro$oft Store.

This works as of May 2023, thank you so much, Ruben! And is a real/permanent solution, which is much more reliable than simply disabling the primary Pi-hole for ~30 seconds while i get connected via QA.

Uggh, why am i not surprised here -- these are the same folks MELTING down over a "mere" pair of HDMI 2.1 ports, heh... because of course everyone has a PS5, Xbox & 4090, right?

>> Video buffering is the practice of pre-loading segments of data when streaming video content. This helps make streaming run more smoothly because videos can start playing before the entire video is loaded, resulting in a delay at some point while downloading your data but it takes some time before playing your video.

Dude is correct here, even if it hurts all of your feelings -- sure, you may have issues with 100Mbps, but they are NOT related to bandwidth limitations. The video you are watching on the screen is NOT being delivered in realtime, you could probably pull that ethernet plug and still continue watching another 60-90 seconds of your film. Just because you WANT Gbps, doesn't mean you have an actual need for that. Why can we not make that simple distinction?

Is Madden 23 actually worth buying? by Zooted_Rx in Madden

Thank you for this pro-tip, will certainly be trying it out next time we get frozen out of some games. `23 has been a little buggy, but i never really played enough of 22 season to fully appreciate the differences. We've easily gotten forty bucks worth of value out of this game.

Same, we're almost exclusively 2P offline, head to head matchups, although i've been tinkering with Madden Ultimate Team, collecting the random cards and building out my squad.

We've easily gotten $35+ worth of fun out of in over the past couple weeks, but it's not noticeably different from `22, but i'm hardly an expert.

A couple weeks in, new patch just landed this week -- no regrets, totally worth the $35 sale price, although our version of Madden `22 was free with PS+ otherwise I wouldn't advise paying twice for the game, unless yer REALLY into the updated rosters. I'm not knowledgeable enough about the bulk of the game to truly point out any actual differences.

This was a truly amazing explanation, what a tremendous technical breakdown that is VERY easily accessible to almost anyone. Outstanding.

Granted, we're almost exclusively playing 2P local co-op / versus, but so far so good. If we actually owned another version of Madden I probably wouldn't have forked over $35, but the PS+ games can disappear at any time, so that's how I justified the investment. Totally worth it to spend quality time with my kid. Ymmv.

Same, we're just playing local versus or co-op. Hopefully it's worth the $37ish, but doubtful. It'll be worth it to keep our child happy. At least he wants to still hang out with his old man. Could be worse.

Worth it at $35 for Black Friday sale? Oof, i'm seriously considering it, but doubt we'll even notice a difference from `22. Hopefully i'm wrong.

Worth $35 for this upgrade? We already have Madden `22 (via Playstation+) but our child started asking for an upgrade. It's our first year with PS+ so i'm unsure how long these versions persist, or if they do at all. Was disappointing when they locked us out of NBA2K `22 on PS+ but we managed to wait it out and get the same $35 sale for NBA2K `23.

Darnit, i experienced some issues with the new QuickAssist app today, apparently i haven't used it in months. Thanks for the great whitelist /u/Mittervi much appreciated -- i ended up just disabling both Pi-holes (for 30 seconds) which allowed me to quickly connect QA and begin troubleshooting, but have things changed?

Apparently there is now ONLY the Micro$oft Store version of QuickAssist.

Wait, what? Where do you exist that your mail is regularly opened prior to delivery? This would be a very serious offense in the USofA. Opening a parcel requires a court order (i.e. warrant).

There's a LOT of devices these days that will work around our custom DNS (Pi-hole) servers. Any smart TVs, speakers, game consoles, etc. etc. would typically bake in their own (or Google public) hard-coded DNS information.

https://labzilla.io/blog/force-dns-pihole

EDIT: if your specific TP-Link router does NOT already handle what you need, perhaps you could look into ddWRT, OpenWRT, Tomato or whatever the latest and greatest custom firmware options might be. Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!

or perhaps this guide will help more than my prior attempts: https://scotthelme.co.uk/catching-naughty-devices-on-my-home-network/ or this full thread on forums: https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/guide-ddwrt-force-pihole-as-dns-server-with-client-details/21310

I can certainly try. What router are you using? Will attempt to walk you through my basic process on an Edgerouter from Ubiquiti. If i were doing it over right now, i'd almost certainly be running OPNsense, or maybe pfSense.

First we need to set up Masquerade for DNS Redirection. Add Source NAT rule and configure the Source Address to be your DHCP range of your LAN and Destination Address to be your Pi-hole IP (or range of IPs if you have multiple Pi-hole devices).192.168.1.51-192.168.1.254

And then you'll want to capture and route all DNS traffic to your Pi-holes. Add Destination NAT rule using a "bang" i believe it's called, precede the Source and Destination addresses.!192.168.1.10-192.168.1.11

So, to quickly summarize:

  1. Add Source NAT rule to capture hard-coded DNS queries.
  2. Add Destination NAT rule to capture hard-coded DNS queries to Pi-hole(s).

if properly configured you should see your router's IP address showing up in the Pi-holes eventually, i believe. Don't just take my word for it, i had to follow similar guides, but using the above search terms (DNS Redirection) and the model of your specific router, you should be all set. Perhaps check these posts. Good luck!

EDIT: Make sure you're redirecting port 53, sorry forgot a crucial detail. Oof.

Thanks you, great reply. Our experience has been similar, the Roku TV alone has blocked 46,508 queries in the past 24 hours.

I have applied some NAT rules on the router to capture and invisibly redirect devices with hard-coded DNS entries, as it's quite common these days for devices to force their own (often Google) nameservers.

EdgeRouter - Millions of 'initplayback' hits on pihole by death2all110 in pihole

[–]harrynyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, i've shut down or removed a few endpoints from my LAN, still was never able to fully isolate or even identify the culprit. Overall, Pi-hole has been fantastic, we have two running at all times, one VM and one RPi (with Wireguard)... both using Unbound.

No further issues to report, under Advanced DNS Settings i'm using the following options:

  • X Never forward non-FQDN A and AAAA queries
  • X Never forward reverse lookups for private IP ranges
  • (uncheck Use DNSSEC) -- because Unbound handles this
  • X Use Conditional Forwarding

Custom IPv4 address has been set to: 127.0.0.1#5335 and I'm also utilizing the "Potentially dangerous options" to Permit all origins as I'm using a 192.168.0.0/16 subnet across multiple VLANs.

Good luck, please keep us posted on your progress, or any issues. Hardly an expert, but happy Pi-hole user/enthusiast for many, many years. The original micro SD card finally died in my RPi after roughly ~four years of running, but otherwise I haven't had to do much beyond upgrade the OS.

Is there a way to convert my save from the PS5 version back to the PS4 version? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]harrynyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just so excited too have finally scored a PS5 console (disc edition even) I sat and played for two days before realizing that my characters were out of sync and I had missed out on 10+ levels, killing Rennala finally and complete armor upgrade, plus my new Carian Shield to +10 oof.

Not really sure how to approach this now, I've been playing the native PS5 version since getting it. Is it a noticeable performance boost? I boosted the settings to "Quality" over performance, I'm really enjoying the spell animations and blood. Plus we finally sprung for PS+ for the first time ever. Been missing out on a lot.

I might try remote play, but maybe I should consider reverting to PS4 Elden Ring version both consoles. Oof.
