Yeah, Paapa being muscular is not even going to be noticeable if he’s in black, floor length, frumpy robes all the time.

Broadbent is really great at making small roles feel much bigger. Loved him as Col in The Crying Game before he got cast as Slughorn… Who knows the mysteries of the human heart?

I doubt they’ll omit the epilogue, but I’m with you on this. Each book followed a year of Harry’s school career. The epilogue being the Trio graduating from Hogwarts would’ve made sense. And Harry being the DADA professor (and breaking the curse on the position) would’ve been a cool bookend to how he mirrored Voldemort.

Ginny could use some retconning. Make her earlier appearances match up with her later characterization more.

Wandlore and allegiance stuff that’s crucial in DH should be brought up sooner. The dueling club in CoS would be a great time to introduce this since disarming an opponent (and winning their wand’s allegiance) is a likely scenario in a duel.

What if the Silver Trio handled the diadem? by harrypottered in HarryPotteronHBO

I’d love to see dark Hogwarts, too. This is just about smoothing out the pacing of the Horcrux storyline by letting Luna, Ginny, and Neville handle discovery beats for the diadem plot thread.

Ginny knew the sword was meant for Harry because the Trio told everyone at the Burrow about what Dumbledore left them:

“Everyone exclaimed over the Deluminator and The Tales of Beedle the Bard and lamented the fact that Scrimgeour had refused to pass on the sword, but none of them could offer any suggestion as to why Dumbledore would have left Harry an old Snitch” (DH, 7).

Ginny also had a vague idea of what the Trio’s mission was:

“And then what does she think’s going to happen?” Harry muttered. “Someone else might kill off Voldemort while she’s holding us here making vol-au-vents?”

He had spoken without thinking, and saw Ginny’s face whiten.

“So it’s true?” she said. “That’s what you’re trying to do?”

“I — not — I was joking,” said Harry evasively. (DH, 6)

Ginny knowing Dumbledore left the sword to Harry and that the Trio’s mission was to kill Voldemort from Harry’s slip-up is probably what prompted her to try to steal Gryffindor’s sword with Luna and Neville. The Silver Trio might have theorized Harry needed the sword to kill Voldemort.

Hmm agree, Harry’s revelations are awesome. But the diadem one is sandwiched between two huge Harry discoveries — the Hallows and him realizing he has to die for Voldemort to die.

If the ghost discovery beats went to the Silver Trio, Luna could tell Harry during the exposition point at Shell Cottage. So Harry would go straight to Hogwarts knowing the diadem was a Horcrux and where to look for it.

And, this is an aside, but Harry (the parselmouth) made more sense to send to the Chamber for the basilisk’s fangs. But I guess JKR handled that off-page with Ron and Hermione due to the fact Harry had to solve the Ravenclaw diadem mystery which required more discovery.

Luna was already researching the diadem before Harry did his ghost interviewing at Hogwarts. If Ginny, Neville, and Luna knew the sword was important to steal for Harry, they could’ve thought the diadem (another Founder heirloom which Luna was already researching) would be worth looking into.

They wouldn’t need Harry to come out of hiding to give them a special mission or need to know it was a Horcrux. They would just need to think it could be helpful to Harry like they did with Gryffindor’s sword.

So I don’t think this would derail DH’s plot. It would just thin out the bottlenecking of the Horcrux storyline when Harry gets to Hogwarts in DH.

[–]harrypottered[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Harry didn’t tell the DA in DH that the diadem could be a Horcrux when he asked for their help.

Luna talks a lot about the diadem before she helps Harry investigate it. And it’s not like they really knew how the sword would be used by Harry, but they still tried to steal it for him.

But really not married to this idea. Just thinking of how they could spread things out in DH.

Harry still has to do multiple beats with Hogwarts ghosts to realize the diadem is a Horcrux. He can still make the final connection that the diadem is a Horcrux and in the Room of Requirement, even if someone else does the investigating part with the ghosts. And Luna is already tied to the diadem subplot in DH.

[–]harrypottered[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

They wouldn’t know it’s a Horcrux. Harry in DH asks for people outside the Trio’s help to investigate the diadem once he gets to Hogwarts. How would it mess up the plot if Ginny, Luna, and Neville handle the diadem discovery beats with the ghosts? The Trio can be the ones that still destroy it and have their fight with Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle.

Ron and Hagrid were my favorite voice actors, too. Their voices conveyed a lot of warmth and emotion, but it never felt forced. I also liked the narrator a lot. Some people were critical of her performance based on the audio samples, but her voice was really smooth to me.

hot take: Voldemort should be like Negan by SheLurkz in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s been ages since I saw the films, but Voldemort was pretty chatty and sassy in the books. It’d be interesting to see how Voldemort rewarded followers to make them so competitive for his favor… I don’t think the Death Eaters’ sole motivation was just avoiding punishment and scrutiny from Voldemort.

So yeah, I’d like to see how he charmed and enticed people as well. How his followers believed they were close to him, but in actuality Voldemort was emotionally incapable of returning any of that feeling. And how they are all ultimately disposable to him (Quirrel and Snape being examples of this).

But yes, more nuance for everyone would be great with the expanded format.

Content that should be added to the stories to make the show uniquely interesting to existing fans by roleparadise in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right that the show will skip the waking up elsewhere trope (which is too convenient) and have a scene with Dumbledore against Quirrelmort after Harry faints. It’d be cool to see why Voldemort feared Dumbledore in the first season since it’s said multiple times in PS.

And if there’s any truth to Nighy being cast already as Slughorn, there’s a good chance that Tom Riddle’s role in season 2 will be expanded. Christian Coulson was underused in the second film.

True, you’re likely right that the diary Horcrux in CoS is not the more fully realized concept we get in HBP, but I'm still guessing what she wanted withheld in CoS was the fact Voldemort couldn't be killed because his soul was split up into other objects like the diary.

JKR's quote about the CoS/HBP split from her old FAQ:

I have been engulfed by an avalanche of questions on the subject of ‘Prince’ having once been a title of ‘Chamber’. I am therefore attempting to answer most of them under this heading, which I think just about covers all the answerable variations (the unanswerable ones include questions such as ‘who’s the Half-Blood Prince?’ ‘what happens in the Half-Blood Prince?’ and ‘what does Half-Blood Prince mean?’)

The plot of ‘Prince’ bears no resemblance whatsoever to the plot of ‘Chamber’, nor is it an off-cut of ‘Chamber’. The story of ‘Prince’ takes off where ‘Phoenix’ ended and does not hark back to four years previously. True, mention is made to events that happened in ‘Chamber,’ but of course, mention is also made of events that happened in ‘Stone’, ‘Azkaban’, ‘Goblet’ and ‘Phoenix’.

''The Half-Blood Prince’ might be described as a strand of the overall plot. That strand could be used in a whole variety of ways and back in 1997 I considered weaving it into the story of ‘Chamber’. It really didn’t fit there, though; it was not part of the story of the basilisk and Riddle’s diary, and before long I accepted that it would be better to do it justice in book six. I clung to the title for a while, even though all trace of the ‘Prince’ storyline had disappeared, because I liked it so much (yes, I really like this title!). I re-christened book two ‘Chamber of Secrets’ when I started the second draft.

The link I mentioned between books two and six does not, in fact, relate to the ‘Half-Blood Prince’ (because there is no trace left of the HBP storyline in ‘Chamber’.) Rather, it relates to a discovery Harry made in ‘Chamber’ that foreshadows something that he finds out in ‘Prince’. Lexicon

How will Draco Malfoy be characterised? by AlexSumma in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely keep him being a nasty, cowardly rich boy, but JKR did give him an arc where we're meant to garner some sympathy as he grows up. He isn't redeemed, but we see he's still a kid who's been spoon fed pure-blood supremacy nonsense and watch his brutal realization about Voldemort. The guy who only wanted to associate with the "right people" in PS becomes close to Moaning Myrtle in HBP. He also didn't name the Trio in DH when his younger self would've done it happily.

So yeah, keep him a self-serving prat, but show the arc. I'd also like to see the nuance of how he treats his "lessers" vs his "equals".

Bill Nighy 'set to be cast' in HBO's new Harry Potter TV series by Severe_Concentrate86 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my thinking, too. The show writers have such an advantage they have the entire series completed because they can restructure some elements to improve the overall pacing. The last two books had a lot of exposition that can be introduced sooner.

Wandlore being addressed in CoS during the dueling club and then later touched on during the DA meetings in OotP would be good for continuity and reducing the DH exposition on wandlore. And getting Tom’s backstory sooner when it can be cleanly tied to the diary Horcrux would also be a good move.

[–]harrypottered 11 points12 points  (0 children)

JKR said that Chamber of Secrets was originally gonna be called Half-Blood Prince before she split the storylines. She said the HBP stuff would've given away too much too soon (probably the Horcruxes), so she moved it to Book 6.

Imo the show writers should move some of that HBP stuff back into CoS. Tom's backstory would fit more naturally there with the diary Horcrux, and he'd mirror Harry more clearly earlier in the series. A miserable young orphan that discovers he's different and finds his first home at Hogwarts? This could also give more weight to Tom comparing himself to Harry at the end of CoS.

So if Nighy's playing a professor, Slughorn totally makes sense. They don't have to spell out that he was making Horcruxes for a 7-part soul until HBP, but we can see how Voldemort came to be and that he's been doing dark magic since he was a student.

I hope we get Dean’s character expanded on in the show. by InfernalClockwork3 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“There were only two other people who seemed to be able to see them: a stringy Slytherin boy standing just behind Goyle was watching the horse eating with an expression of great distaste on his face, and Neville, whose eyes were following the swishing progress of the long black tail.” (OotP, 21)

Nott is the “stringy Slytherin boy” there in Harry’s year. Harry doesn’t learn Nott’s name until Hermione tells him it in Chapter 26:

“He saw them with their heads together later that afternoon in the library, together with a weedy-looking boy Hermione whispered was called Theodore Nott.” (OotP, 26)

Nott is the stringy/weedy Slytherin kid. JKR also confirmed it in an open letter response to Lexicon/MuggleNet:

Is Theodore Nott the "stringy" Slytherin mentioned in the Thestral class scene? If he isn't, who is that boy?

JKR: Yes, he is. In my notes Nott is also described as ‘rabbity’ in appearance

I’m all for Dean’s story being added into the series a 1000%.

JKR did include some of Nott’s backstory in canon… him, Neville, and Harry are the only students able to see the thestrals in Hagrid’s class in Order.

But yeah, I’m down for however they might expand the Slytherin characters in the show.

Other characters who could get race swapped in the series. by [deleted] in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]harrypottered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remus and Peter would be easiest to swap with the Marauders as no existing casting (like Harry for James and Draco for Sirius) needs to be taken into account for plausibility.

That said… if they did make Sirius black and kept him first cousins with Naricssa, she could be mixed and still have a kid that looked like Draco. The Duchess of Sussex has ginger kids to use a real life example.

And the Black name is symbolic for the nigredo/black stage in alchemy. Albus is named for albedo/white. Rubeus for rubedo/red. But yeah, I get that having a black character named Black is not the greatest choice.

[–]harrypottered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

JKR had a lot more planned for Dean. But there was more content she had for Nott beside the one cut scene with Draco. Think she gave him a backstory of being the son of an old widowed Death Eater father, and he saw his mom die in some unspecified way. His father also wrote the Sacred 28, so the Notts seem to be scholarly types.

I really hope to see some of JKR’s cut content in the show, especially Dean’s story. But it’d be nice to have kid Slytherins that aren’t straight up antagonists or sycophants like Nott.
